WIND, WATER, ROCK AND SKY: THE STORY OF COGNASHENE, GEORGIAN BAY., David, Jennifer, ed. Foreword by Hon. William G. Davis.
1 David, Jennifer, ed. Foreword by Hon. William G. Davis. WIND, WATER, ROCK AND SKY: THE STORY OF COGNASHENE, GEORGIAN BAY.
Toronto Cognashene Book Corporation 1997 0968189504 / 9780968189504 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good-
191 pp, oblong (9 3/4" H x 11 3/4" D). Map endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "In the spectacular expanse of wind, water, rock and sky that is Georgian Bay, there is only one Cognashene . Historically rich, geographically gorgeous, shaped by colourful characters and events, Cognashene's allure is as powerful today as it was for the first hardy souls to arrive at its scenic shores. (This book) celebrates the uniquely Canadian island community and traces its dramatic journey from its native roots, through its industrial development to its days of pioneer settlement. In these pages you'll meet Champlain and his young protege, Etienne Brule. You'll find out what it took to be a success - or a failure! - in the lumber days. You can settle in for a visit at Longuissa, Whalen's or Blarney Castle, or, if it's Sunday - and you're so inclined - stop by the Church on the Rocks. And you'll discover throughout the breathtaking beauty that has captivated countless artists, including A.Y. Jackson and other members of the Group of Seven. Part historical document, part warm-hearted slice-of-cottage-life, (it) reveals a distinctive and winning personality. It is, quite simply, the essence of Cognashene." Minor rubbing and a tiny dint on rear board. Dust jacket has tiny edge tear and minor wear at top of rear hinge area, minor browning on inside top/bottom edges, light fading to color on rear flap-fold and on bottom edge of rear flap, moderate color fading on front flap-fold and on bottom edge of front flap, minor rubbing on rear panel.

4 Rowland, John T. NORTH TO ADVENTURE.
New York W.W. Norton 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good
240 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "During a lecture in New Haven one autumn some years ago, Dr. Wilfred Grenfell mentioned that a hospital tender had been given to the Grenfell Labrador missions and that a crew was needed to sail her from Boston to Battle Harbor on the Labrador coast. John Rowland and his roommate, then freshmen at Yale, volunteered. That was the beginning of a long association with Dr. Grenfell, later Sir Wilfred, and his famous medical missions. The first voyage north to deliver the 'Pomiuk' took the young adventurers through a summer of experiences some horrendous, some hilarious, some mysterious, and all downright exciting. During the next three summers Rowland and various friends as shipmates and crew voyaged northward on assignment from Dr. Grenfell. This was in the days when wireless communication was in its infancy and aids to navigation non-existent in those far northern waters. Charts were vague and often grossly inaccurate. All this made each voyage and cruise an adventure in exploration. In fact, one cruise was made along the Hudson's Strait shore of Baffin Island to find a site for a new Hudson's Bay Company trading post - truly a voyage in the tradition of the early explorers. (The author) has written of his youthful experiences in northern waters and the stark, rugged, storm-battered lands of Labrador, Hudson's Strait and Baffin Island, in a way that will keep the reader entranced and open up for him a reading experience of rare pleasure." Minor darkening to edges of text block, a few tiny dents on rear board, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has been price-clipped; has moderate edge wear/wrinkling including tiny chips/tears; tiny dents, scuffs and light scratches on rear panel; light soiling; small edge tears with old tape along inside top & bottom edges.

THE ART OF BABAR: THE WORK OF JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF., Weber, Nicholas Fox.
6 Weber, Nicholas Fox. THE ART OF BABAR: THE WORK OF JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1989 0810918935 / 9780810918931 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff.
191 pp, 12" H. Bright red cloth with blindstamped Babar on front board, white lettering on spine, yellow endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w and colour reproductions. "Babar was created by the painter Jean de Brunhoff, who produced the first seven books of the series between 1931 and 1937, the year of his untimely death. In 1946 his artist son Laurent took up where Jean had left off. He wrote and illustrated his first Babar book when he was twenty-one and has now done thirty Babar books. In bringing Babar back, Laurent was holding on to an enchanted childhood as well as keeping alive the legacy of his beloved father. The elephant actually had been the invention of his mother, Cecile, who thought up the first adventure one evening as a bedtime story for Laurent and his younger brother, Mathieu. In 'The Art of Babar' (the author) has worked with Laurent de Brunhoff to recapture aspects of the artist's childhood in France and the values that he grew up with. He has a lot to say about how both he and his father used watercolor, and the author has explored this technical aspect of their art. The reader is presented with the development from rough sketches to final illustrations; much of this material has never before been reproduced." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
