It was a sweet day and a bitter one for millions of people whose lives had been forever changed. This day, and long days of war that led to it, are brought to life in (this book). More than 300 Canadians tell their own stories of the Second World War - stories of cour a g e , sacrifice, tragedy, and glory. It was one of the most trying times in Canadian history, and these ordinary men and women rose to the extraordinary challenge laid before them. Their stories are celebrated here, woven into a compelling narra ti ve o f the Canadian wartime experience, bringing the past vividly to life. Here are tales from noted war correspondents Scott Young and Matthew Halton; stories of home-front rationing, shortages and endless bureaucracy; horrific memories of Buc hen wal d - and Canadian internment camps; hair-raising bomber command stories; revelations of the repatriation controversy; and hilarious accounts of wartime entertainers, including Wayne and Shuster and the crew of 'Meet The Navy'." CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
8 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Small faint scuff at top of fore-edge of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

A POCKETFUL OF YEARS. ANOTHER MRS KINGI BOOK., Cleary, Frances.
9 Cleary, Frances. A POCKETFUL OF YEARS. ANOTHER MRS KINGI BOOK.
Collins, Auckland, New Zealand, 1975, first edition.
166 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Mrs Kingi, the beloved heroine of 'This Mrs Kingi', continues her story in this delightful sequel. As she looks back on her seventy years in the small Bay of Islands area (New Zealand) that has been her home - and that of her family - for generations, Mrs Kingi ponders on the changes she has seen. Typical of these is the family of her daughter Lizzie and husband Sam. Flash and Gordon, the twins born at the end of the earlier book, are now stu rdy youngsters. Les, the oldest and Mrs Kingi's secret favourite, is away at school on a scholarship, with his future assured; and the other children are normal and healthy. Only Gus is a problem, and his grandmother worries that he may t u r n o u t t o be a bad Maori if his talent for carving and drawing is not encouraged. That is Mrs Kingi's strength, and her weakness: that she cares about everybody and everything in her immediate vicinity, from her friend Mrs Wiki's dog to the s ta te of t he wo rld in general. But there is one thing she can and does do, this 'wrinkled-up old Maori woman of no importance', as she calls herself. When faced with an agonising decision under the pressure of other people, Mrs Kingi accep ts wha t s h e f eel s a r e h er responsbilities - not only to her close family, but to all her people. The book ends on a triumphant note, as the whole district celebrates Mrs Kingi's seventieth birthday and, on the happiest day of her life, youn g G us g ives h er t he b est gi ft o f all." Light edge wear, book slightly cocked, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three tiny corner creases. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, ligh t fa ding to sp ine colo r. V ery Goo d/Ver y Good

268 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "At the age of twenty-two, Archibald McDonald was responsible for the health and well-being of all ninety-four members of the 1813 party of Lord Selkirk's ill-fated Red River settlement. (He) responded to this heavy burden as he did to all the other difficulties that he experienced in his life as adminstrator and fur trader in the days of the Red River settlement and the early history of the Pacific Northwest - with an engaging combination of practicality, good humor, and hard work. Drawing extensively from McDonald's letters, reports, and diaries, (the author) lets the subject of this biography tell his own story: of the enmity between the Red River settlers and the violent, vindictive Nor-Westers, who were determined to destroy the Red River colony; of his years of service in the Hudson's Bay Company, where he became commander of forts on the Lower Fraser and Columbia Rivers; and of the long canoe voyages through the untamed Canadian wilderness."
