LOUIS WAIN'S CATS., Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton.
2 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

3 Bell, Caroline and Bell, Eddie. Edited by Alden Hatch. THANK YOU TWICE, OR HOW WE LIKE AMERICA.
Harcourt, Brace, New York, 1941, second printing.
112 pp, 8vo (8 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This is the unvarnished narrative of the adventures of Caroline and Eddie Bell, aged twelve and ten, who were among the first children sent from England to America in the summer of 1940. The man who asked them to write their own book said: 'Tell about the things you like and the things you don't like. Don't pull any punches. Americans can take it.' Americans can not only take it, but will love it. It is a gorgeous, high-spirited do c u m e nt. The impact of our daily routine, with its excitements and it disappointments too, seems just as diverting to us as it is to them." Some areas of light dis-coloration on boards, endpapers are browned, several tiny ink/dye marks on pages 3 0/ 31 a nd at edges/margins of a few other pages, light browning on edges of text block, slight scuff across fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has pieces missing at edges and some tears (text is complete on flaps and most of title), moderate br own ing - heavier on spine and flap-folds, now in a mylar sleeve. Good+/Poor

Toronto Dundurn Press 1997 1550022946 / 9781550022940 First Edition Soft Cover with Self Flaps Very Good+ Inscribed By Author
171 pp, 8vo (9" H). Inscribed by author on title page. B&w photographs. "A first-hand account of the experiences of a young Canadian airwoman who served both in Canada and on overseas duty, this series of 150 letters brings home the day-to-day immediacy of life in uniform during the Second World War. Moments of hilarity interspersed with impatience and frustration are recorded verbatim, along with an underlying sense of urgency about winning a war that hung in the balance for too long. Written to the Dean of Women at Macdonald College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Mary Buch's letters lay untouched for over fifty years after her return to Canada from England in 1945. Today they serve as a looking-glass into the War Years that is tinged with the freshness of youthful spontaneity and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. Carolyn Gossage has interwoven colourful contextual sidebars that provide today's readers with an overview of the times and circumstances that have become increasingly elusive in the intervening years." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, slight soft crease to top corner of rear cover - with very light migration into last few papges, spine flat and uncreased.

"Although the Jains have exerted an influence on Indian society and religion out of proportion to their relatively small numbers, they have received v ery little attention from scholars until the last few years. (This) is the first book to analyse the sociology of the Jains, and to discuss the notion of the 'community' based on religious affiliation in India. The contributors include so c i o l o g i s t s, anthropologists, scholars of Indian classical religions and languages, each addressing, as a central organising principle, the conception of the Jains as a community. (It) represents an important theoretical addition to existin g st ud ie s, w hi ch h ave hitherto focussed mainly on caste and class politics as the fundamental units of Indian society, and provides unique ethnographic information on the Jains, derived from recent fieldwork." A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
7 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4"H). "When Napoleon left Egypt in August, 1799, he was deserting a plague-ridden force, whose numbers had been reduced by half since they first landed fourteen months before. Their pay was four million francs in arrear and all ranks were in a state of near-mutiny against their Commander-in-Chief, whose real purpose in Egypt, they alleged, was to augment his personal glory. But by November 9th, the 18th Brumaire, Napoleon had so regained the support of the Army in Paris that he was able to drive out the elected representatives of the French people at bayonet-point from the Orangery of St Cloud, and assume supreme power." 301 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)he first comprehensive examination of the independent schools and their role in Canadian society. Based on extensive research in neglected historical records and on hundreds of interviews from coast to coast, it documents the evolution of fifty schools across the country, sketches some of the famous (and infamous) headmasters and mistresses, and reveals the often unconventional beginnings of these Establishment establishments. No dry academic history, (it) concentrates on the people and the colour behind the grey walls: the milkman who became a headmaster by soliciting students on his rounds; the seven Anglican sisters who financed their school by selling used clothing; the school that acquired its property, an opulent nineteenth-century mansion, at a cut-rate price from a bankrupt social climber. (This) is a delight for everyone interested in Canadian education and social history." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny corner creases. Cassell, London, 1963, first edition.
245 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "St James's Palace is one of London's most famous landmarks, its Tudor clock-tower familiar to residents and visitors in its dramatic position at the far end of St James's Street. T here is, however, no other building in London of comparable age about which so little is known, since the public is rarely allowed beyond the well-known facade. Ironically enough, the site on which Henry VIII had the palace built for Anne B o l e y n w a s once occupied by a nunnery, but the odour of sanctity seems soon to have dispersed and its history revolves around ladies of a lighter kind. Here lived Prince Henry, the brilliant elder son of James I who, had he survived to inh e ri t th e th ro n e, w ould probably have altered completely the course of history. But on his death his brother Charles took the fatal path which led finally to imprisonment in the Guard Room at St James's, from where he walked across the park to th e sca ff old . In 16 97 the palace was officially designated the Court of St James's and from then until the accession of Victoria was the sovereign's official residence. Here died George III, the record of whose last mad years makes poigna nt read in g in th is p os t-F reud ian age. But was it on him alone that the curse of madness lay? What was behind the ghastly murder of Sellis, the Duke of Cumberland's servant, found dead in bed with his head nearly severed from his body? Th e r iddle of his deat h has ne ver been solv ed but it seems likely that the royal Duke was himself implicated. Although the main flood of history has been diverted to other channels and the palace now lives mostly in the past, there are yet lin ks w ith th e tw entie th ce ntury: if the pala ce gh ost - for there is, of course, a ghost - looks over the shoulder of an official in the Lord Chamberlain's office when plays are being scrutinized before performance, the bawdy situations in t hem w ill har dly c ause h er to raise a n eye brow. Life at St James's was always like that." Samll store label on front pastedown, a few tiny foxing marks on top of textblock. 552 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "For some, like the aging man-about-town Agar Adamson, and the promising politician Talbot Papineau, the war was both the climax and the denouement of their careers. For others, like Harold Innis, just off an Ontario farm, the horror of the trenches changed the direction and purpose of their lives. For Vancouver secretary Grace MacPherson, war was a great adventure; for Ottawa socialite Ethel Chadwick, it was a wave that pushed her aside and left her stranded for life. For Max Aitken, better known as Lord Beaverbrook, it was an opportunity to be exploited. For Newfoundlander Owen Steele, it was an heroic duty that ended in a rain of bullets at Beaumont-Hamel. Sandra Gwyn has woven the intimate threads of these lives into a composite portrait that is overwhelming in its power." Minor wrinkle at top of hinges. 14 Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.) MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH.
London David Stott 1887 Hard Cover Good- Inscribed by editor.
458 pp + (1) pp publisher's advertising, 9" H. Tissue-covered sepiatone frontispiece. Inscribed on half title page: "For dearest Louisechen / from her devoted Sister / Helena (underlined with a flourish) / July. 1887. (underlined)". Helena Augusta Victoria was Queen Victoria's 5th child and married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming Princess Christian. The British Royal family were fond of German diminutives and the 'Louisechen' of the inscription could have been her younger sister, Louise Caroline Alberta, or her Prussian sister-in-law, wife of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was referred to as 'Louisechen' in family papers. The Duke served as Governor General of Canada in 1911 and 'Duchess of Connaught' has been pencilled above 'Louisechen' at some time. An interesting association copy. Some small splits to paper on inside hinges, a few pages with soft wrinkling at top corner, scattered light foxing marks on preliminary pages and on two rear pages, book is lightly cocked, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, small slight bump at board corners, age/dust darkening to edges of text block - especially to the top, rubbing and soiling to boards.

465 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), B&w photographs, maps. "Jean Batten, whose sudden disappearance in Majorca in 1982 created a mystery for nearly five years, was one of the great aviation megastars of the 1930s. Her spectacular flights ranked with those of Britain's legendary Amy Johnson and America's Amelia Earhart. Yet, despite her brilliance as a pilot, she remained the least well-known of them all. For the dentist's daughter from New Zealand bu ilt an impregnable wall around her private life - which was dominated, though few ever knew it, by the shadowy Svengali figure of her mother. Drawing on secret memoirs found after (her) death and on hundreds of interviews with people who knew her, this first biography of Jean's sad and elusive life explodes the enduring myths of happiness and perfection that she created for herself. The real Jean Batten emerges as a fascinating woman, who combined bravery and ruthlessness with the stunning a nd seductive beauty she used so effectively to achieve her destiny. After her disappearance, the search for Jean during the mid-1980s went on fruitlessly for five years. But where the diplomatic initiatives of the New Zealand Government failed to find her, the determination of Ian Mackersey - and his wife Caroline - succeeded. In a major amateur detective operation they established at last in 1987 the truth about this remarkable woman's bizarre and lonely fate." 376 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Colour plates. "Lord Hervey was one of the most controversial figures of the Georgian age. The consummate courtier - strikingly handsome, elegant and witty - he was both the favourite of the Queen and right-hand man to Walpole. Painted by Hogarth, satirized by Fielding and Pope, and confidant of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Hervey counted among his friends and enemies some of the most brilliant men and women of the age. Yet for all his hard-won fame, there was a scandalous private side to Hervey. He was certainly a rake (rumour had it that he shared a mistress with the Prince of Wales), but such behaviour was quite normal among the eighteenth-century aristocracy. Less usual, however, was his ten-year affair with another man. From the outset, Hervey was fascinated by Stephen Fox. His engaging, delightfully witty letters reveal the depth of their passion for one another, and the lengths to which they were driven in order to escape detection. Finally, theirs became an 'open secret', one of many factors that was to contribute to Hervey's downfall. In this entertaining and wonderfully observed biography, Lucy Moore brings to life an entire age, with its shimmering artifice and its poisonous deceit, its highly wrought melodrama and its grand passions."
