3 Castaneda, Carlos. Foreword by Walter Goldschmidt. THE TEACHINGS OF DON JUAN: A YAQUI WAY OF KNOWLEDGE.
New York Simon & Schuster 1973 671215558 First Simon and Schuster Printing. Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
288 pp, 8 1/2" H. Complete number string beginning with 1, although first printed by the University of California Press in 1968. "(F)irst introduces to the reader the elusive, magical, powerful, haunting and perplexing person of Don Juan, the Yaqui brujo, or sorcerer, whose apprentice Castaneda becomes. Their relationship - in which a reluctant and demanding Don Juan instructs Castaneda in the disciplines of becoming a 'man of knowledge' by means of a series of mystical experiences and deceptively simple parables - has been described (by Time magazine) as 'one of the most fortunate literary encounters since Boswell was introduced to Dr. Johnston.' (This book) is nothing less than a revlation, a startling and illuminating journey into a world of 'nonordinary reality' that is not just the record of a remarkable and unprecedented inititation, but a glimpse of a new way of spiritual knowledge, comparable in its complexity, its subtle perceptions of human nature, its pragmatic system of ethics, to the great religions of the East - yet rooted in the forgotten culture of (North America). Above all, (it) cannot fail to leave the reader with the strongest impression of the nobility, depth and authority of Don Juan and his teachings." Previous owner's chop mark (stamp) on front free endpaper, two small light browning marks at fore-edge of page leaf 13/14, very light browning in margins of pages and endpapers, light browning to edges of text block, minor wrinkling and light fading at top/bottom edges of spine, small corner crease on page leaf 283/284. Dust jacket has is price-clipped, has three creases down front flap, very light browning to top/bottom edges of flaps, light edge wear/wrinkling with a few tiny chips and tears - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small chip and tear with old tape repair at bottom of front panel, several small tears archivally taped, light fading to spine and hinge color, light rubbing.

4 Cutter, Donald C. (Dionisio Alcala Galiano, Cayetano Valdes, Jose Cardero.) CALIFORNIA IN 1792: A SPANISH NAVAL VISIT.
Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Soft Cover Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." 7 Hall, Donald. MARIANNE MOORE: THE CAGE AND THE ANIMAL.
Pegasus, New York, 1970.
199 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "(This) is a study of the life, character, and art of one of America's finest poets....(It) accounts for every phase of Miss Moore's life, the early sources of her unusual character, the quick reco gnition and encouragement of her work by Ezra Pound, her years as a young poet in Greenwich Village where her contemporaries included Alfred Kreymborg, William Carlos Williams, H.D., and Wallace Stevens, her distinguished and controversial e d i t o r s h i p of the 'Dial', the most prestigious literary magazine of its day, her 'retirement' to Brooklyn where she continued for decades consistently to produce some of the best poems written in our time. The major part of the book, howev er , is d ev ot ed t o Miss Moore's poetry - from her first book, 'Poems', arranged for and published in 1921 by friends without her knowledge, to the 'Complete Poems' in 1967. Mr. Hall sees danger and protection as recurring preoccupations in Mi ss Mo ore 's wor k, and sh ow s how, in poem after poem, she has explored these themes, calling to her defense a wonderful array of self-sufficient animals and objects, and conjuring such bright shields as independence, courage, love, and imaginati on. T hrou gh minu te atte ntio n t o the language of the poems, he reveals Miss Moore as a poet of fantasy, distortion, and deep feeling....(This book) offers valuable new perspectives on one of the most intriguing figures in twentieth-century le tter s an d mak es acces sib le on e of the richest and most rewarding achievements of modern poetry." 283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. There, SBS teams operated in parallel with their SAS counterparts, probing the Argentine-held islands and feeding back essential intelligence information. In an island war, they were very much in their element, and they played a key part in reconnoitring the eventual landing site for the Task Force at San Carlos." 345 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "Brave, tough, resourceful, and, rarest of all, blessed with an irreverent sense of humour, (Major-General Lewis) MacKenzie needed all those qualities for the biggest assignment of his military career: striving for peace among the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. In this riveting memoir, MacKenzie describes how he created Sector Sarajevo, and with a 30-nation UN force set out to liberate the airport to receive desperately needed food and medical supplies. MacKenzie's outstanding and unorthodox leadership catapulted him to the status of an international celebrity, as he used the media - 'the only weapon I had' - to maximum advantage. Against the daily drama of shelling, sabotage, murder and shameless propaganda, motivated by ethnic hatreds, MacKenzie's adventures in Sarajevo read like a war novel - except that it is all tragically true. With the verve of a natural storyteller, (he) also recounts the often bizarre highlights of eight previous peacekeeping tours in the Middle East, Cyprus and Vietnam. From bluffing his way through the Turkish-Cypriot lines to boisterous forays into Saigon's netherworld; from basketball in the Gaza Strip to dodging sniper fire in Sarajevo; from daring diplomatic improvisations to bluntly outspoken criticisms of the UN bureaucracy: here is a veteran peackeeper's frank, funny and unforgettable story." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine/front hinge. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, tiny tear and wrinkling at bottom of front hinge/front panel.

Vancouver J.J. Douglas 1976 0888940564 / 9780888940568 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
232 pp, 9 1/4" H. Illustration section on green stock at front of book, map. "An ocean-going ship built of copper-sheathed mahogany. A trans-Siberian expedition that builds gallows every 20 miles. A circumnavigator who starts his working life as an apprentice to a Scottish grocer. Of the marvels and quirks of Europe's 18th-century forays to the northwest coast, few signs remain on Canada's Pacific shores. Yet before 1792, twenty-nine voyages reached land between what is now the California-Oregon border and the Bering Sea. Each of these voyages permanently altered the balance of power among European courts - as well as setting the tone of relations between the native peoples and the 'mau mau'l ney': those who came 'floating on the water without land'. Derek Pethick captures the political significance of each voyage while conveying the important details that make the men, their failures and accomplishments, come alive: for instance, the journal entry showing how the crew of the fated second Bering expedition, marooned on a desolate northern island, still debated whether they might lighten their misery by playing cards or whether this behaviour would be at variance with the tsar's orders." Faint erased pencil marks at top of front free endpaper, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small chips, several edge tears with old tape repairs on inside top edge, light rubbing/soiling, small surface paper loss on spine, small light water stain on inside bottom edge.

15 Phillips, Gene D. Introduction by Carlos Baker. (Ernest Hemingway.) HEMINGWAY AND FILM.
Frederick Unger, New York, 1980.
192 pp, 8 3/16" H, soft cover. ISBN 0804466440 B&w photographs. "Ernest Hemingway's fiction presents the film adaptor with special problems....In his penetrating study, Gene Phillips pinpoints the difficulty in turning Hemingway's subtle fiction into movie material. Some of Hollywood's finest talents have responded to the challenge. Beginning in 1932 with Frank Borazge's 'A Farewell to Arms', starring Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes, several directors have tried their hand - Sam Wood ('For Wh om the Bell Tolls', 1943), Howard Hawks ('To Have and to Have Not', 1944), and Henry King ('The Sun Also Rises', 1957). They drew on the not inconsiderable skills of such screenwriters as Dudley Nichols, William Faulkner, and John Houston. The r e s ults met with varying success. In exploring the reasons why, the book draws added validity from interviews with many of the directors and cinematographers involved in the persistent attempts to translate Hemingway into cinematic images. Carl os B ak er's moving essay, 'Hemingway's Last Appeal', sets the tone for this thematic investigation. For the interested reader or film student, the book also includes a filmography, selected bibliography, and photographs." Eliot (London), Ezra Pound (Paris), Jose Ortega y Gasset (Spain). D.H. Lawrence writes a book review, William Carlos Williams discusses Marianne Moore, Gilbert Seldes reviews 'The Great Gatsby', and Paul Claudel gives us 'A Glance at the Soul of Japan'. An unfinished version of Eliot's 'The Hollow Men' and an early version of Pound's 'Fifth Canto' are included and works of Derain, Picasso, Matisse, and other artists are reproduced in this collection. All of the departments of 'The Dial' are represented, and most of the material has not been reprinted elsewhere... " Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small area of old glue on rear hinge, slight loss of color on colored spine label. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, a few small chips/tears/creases at top of spine - archivally taped, small ghost sticker mark on front panel, light edge wear at bottom of spine. VG/VG-
