"...(gathers) todgether an outstanding team of military historians to write about the characters and careers of twenty-six generals - the men in field-grey and carmine-red whose expertise enabled the Wehrmacht to win the early dazzling victories of 1939-41 and then to endure so long against such heavy odds...probes the central mystery of why a generation of able commanders and staff officers from the most deeply professional officer corps in the world became subservient to Hitler's purposes and why even the best of them failed to deflect Hitler from his disastrous decisions..." HarperCollins, New York, 1991, book club edition.
566 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "By taking advantage of Allied command of the sea and air to effect complete surprise, infantry and armored forces landing at Anzio on January 22 were expected to secure a beachhead and then push inland to cut the two main highways and railroads supplying the German armies to the south, either trapping and annihilating them or forcing them to withdraw north and opening the way to R o m e . S u c h was the plan. What really happened, brilliantly told by Carlo D'Este, was a near disaster for the Allies and the unfortunate soldiers involved. Doomed by uncertain leadership at the highest levels, including Churchill's pressure an d me dd l in g, G en eral Sir Harold Alexander's lack of firm directives, and General Mark Clark's unwillingness to risk defeat or push a tired General John Lucas, the Anzio beachhead became a death trap, with Allied troops forced to fight for the ir li ves f o r f ive dr ead ful months in a throwback to the trench warfare of World War I. Even the enventual Allied victory, when the Germans finally gave way in May 1944, was tarnished by Clark's ambition to be first in Rome instead of a ttem pti ng t o cu t o ff and des troy or capture fleeing German troops...." Hong Kong, Macao, Tokyo, Honolulu, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, Geneva, Naples, Monte Carlo - these are his 'thrilling cities'. 311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.

Tundra, Montreal, 1978.
Unpaginated, oblong (8 7/8" H x 10 5/16" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887761054 Beautifully illustrated in colour and b&w. "Montreal, Canada, was the sleigh center of the world in the 1920s and 1930s. No other city with so much snow was so wealthy or so dependent on sleighs for its daily life. Nowhere else could such variety and ingenuity in sleighmaking be found. Except for the sighseeing sleighs with their fur rugs and shiny paint - the only ones that exist today - none of these sleighs was used for pleasure. But what pleasurable sights and sounds they presented! Here then are the authentic sleights that Carlo Italiano watched, stole rides on and drew as a child. Borrowing from his sketchbooks and many happy memories, he has created a unique book: a work of art, an invaluable historical record and a memoir of a gentler past when the only street noises were shouts and sleighbells." The 23 colour paintings show a variety of commercial and other vehicles (baked beans sleigh, Fire Department sleighs, brewery sleigh, chip wagon, CNR freight sleigh, etc.) Small bump at top of front hinge, some light rubbing on front board, very light edge wear. Dust jacket has small bump at top of front hinge, light browning. Very Good/Very Good

" 'Coco' Chanel changed the way women dressed, brought them a new chic, and liberated them forever. But she paid a tremendous pric e for her domination of the fashion scene, a reign that lasted six decades. She was driven by her ambition to build an international empire and become a millionairess. Happiness, however, eluded her. The luck that attended her professional ca r e e r was absent from her private life. The great love of her life died in a car crash. She was wooed by an English Duke, a Russian Prince and by one of the greatest French poets of the age. The man she finally sought to marry dropped dead in fr on t of her. She outlived nearly all her lovers and died alone, feeling a failure. This handsome new biography, lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned paintings and with photographs, tells of her extraordinary life, her tragedies and tr ium ph s, and explains her unique appeal both as a woman and as a great designer." 9 Reid, Ed. MAFIA.
New York Random House 1952 Third Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Good
238 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "Popularly know as The Black Hand, the Mafia, which began in medieval Sicily as a patriotic group, has been and still is in control of organized crime in the United States. It has achieved this dubious distinction by the systematic liquidation of rival, non-Sicilian gangs. The mere itemization of this long and bloody reign of underworld terror will give every responsible citizen pause for thought - after he has stopped shivering! This book contains much new material derived from secret sources. Perhaps the most sensational of its revelations links key Mafia figures with the Allied Military Government in Italy. How one of the most powerful Mafia heads, under indictment for murder in this country, turned up as an aide to AMG, received letters of recommendation from United States Army officers, and at the same time conducted huge blackmarket operations in American supplies, is one of the monstrous disclosures. Why this same notorious criminal, following his arrest, was not returned to the U.S. until after the strange death of the key witness against him, is another part of the riddle that hints at the enormous secret strength of Mafia terrorism. (The author) courageously digs deep into the muck of vice and crime to throw light upon a ruthless gang of killers and racketeers whose influence is as evil as it is widespread." Small initials in pen on free rear endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wear, creases at top edge with color loss - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear, minor browning.

Toronto Longmans, Green 1940 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Good Good- Fenwick dust jacket art.
284 pp, + (4 pp), small 8vo (7 3/8" H), orange cloth with black lettering on spine. "In the heart of London's clubland there stands a tall and grimly forbidding edifice known to taxi-drivers and the elegant young men who frequent its precincts as the Drones Club. Yet its somewhat austere exterior belies the atmosphere of cheerful optimism and bonhomie that prevails within. For here it is that young gallants of Mayfair forgather for the pre-luncheon bracer and to touch lightly on the topics of the day. But all is not idle chatter that passes at this hour of the morning snifter - life in its sterner aspects often comes under review and is discussed with a candour that loosens tongues and encourages confidences. Then it is that the Eggs and Beans cluster round, and, with bated breath, listen while a Crumpet holds the floor with a dramatic narrative of domestic disturbances in the life of Bingo Little or, perhaps, the heart-throb story of Freddie Fitch-Fitch at Droitgate Spa. To the members of the Drones such epics are history in the making; and to us, because our ribs ache from joyous laughter, they are no less significant." Contents: All's Well with Bingo; Bingo and the Peke Crisis; The Editor Regrets; Sonny Boy; Anselm Gets His Chance; Romance at Droitgate Spa; A Bit of Luck for Mabel; Buttercup Day; Ukridge and the Old Stepper. Moderate browning on free endpapers, tiny foxing marks on preliminary pages, foxing on top of text block - and a few on the other text block edges, small dog-ear crease on page 79/80, small to tiny bump at top corner of pages 39-80, large soft creases on page leaf 161/162, very light wear/fading at edges of boards, light fading/wrinkling at bottom edge of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling with a few tiny tears/chips, large taped tear across rear panel and rear flap, moderate foxing on inside surface and on flaps, light soiling, colors are still bright.
