LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES., Colville, Robert.
2 Colville, Robert. LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES.
Robert Hale, London, 1951, first edition.
268 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, fold-out map at rear. "The area which is the subject of this book is one of great variety and contrast. From Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath the land slopes away to busy and conge sted Camden Town; in Somers Town vast building schemes are carried out beside quiet old squares; historic houses stand near to new and prosperous residential quarters. There is an astonishing variety of institutions, from the Zoo and Holl o w a y a n d P entonville prisons to University colleges and other places of learning and research, from the Caledonian Market to the ancient foundation of Queen Matilda. Over the whole scene hangs the atmosphere both of accomplished and pending c ha ng e. T he g r ea t railway companies, four of whose termini profoundly affect the life of parts of the area, are nationalised; the well-run private house, once the hall mark of the Northern Heights, is giving way to blocks of flats. Mr Co lvi lle de scr i bes th is ch ang ing scene and its implications in an objective and impartial manner. Although the time is the present, the past is used to explain developments and tendancies, and a clear picture of an area in transition appears ." Ligh t br owni ng to endp ape rs, sli ght bowing to rear board, corner crease and tiny hinge tear (archivally taped) on folding map, very light edge wear, small wrinkle across lower spine, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor foxing ma rks on t op of text blo ck. Dust jac ket has m oderate edge wear/wrinkling along with small chips and tears - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing on rear panel. Very Good/Good+

CAMDEN'S BRITANNIA: KENT. FROM THE EDITION OF 1789 BY RICHARD GOUGH., Copley, Gordon J., annotated and edited by.
3 Copley, Gordon J., annotated and edited by. CAMDEN'S BRITANNIA: KENT. FROM THE EDITION OF 1789 BY RICHARD GOUGH.
Hutchinson, London, 1977.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091252407 B&w reproductions, double-page map. "William Camden provided in his 'Britannia' a historical and topographical survey, county by county, of England - and to a lesser extent - of Scotland and Ireland. Since he travelled the country at the vital period when the monasteries had only just been dissolved and before the destruction of ancient monuments in the Civil War and later centuries, his book remains a primar y s o u r c e o f great value. Yet, to be restored to its full usefulness as a tool for the modern archaeologist, historian and topographer, it requires comprehensive annotation in the light of subsequent research. This immense task has been und er t ak en b y Dr G o rd on Copley, who has himself an enviable reputation in all three of these allied fields. He has collected and collated information from any sources, and personally travelled thousands of miles to visit the sites mentioned b y C am den as th ey ca n b e see n today. This opening volume of a series intended to cover the same ground described by the Tudor historian shows how much, despite the destruction of time and the vandalism of the developer, survives of our hist oric he rita ge. Not th e le ast of its attractions is the rich turn of phrase which makes the notes a joy to read, and rivals the quality of Gough's English verion of Camden's original Latin." Tiny dint on front free endpaper - migrates into preli mina ry pa ges. Dus t ja cket hasl igh t edg e wrinkling, 1/2" chip at top of front panel and 1/2" tear at top of rear panel - both repaired with cellotape, old price label and two corner creases on front flap, minor rubbing, light soiling a nd a f ew li ght fi nger marks, very ligh t bro wnin g. "The bulk of the world's cruising fleet emanates from non-coral areas and carries out most of its crui sing within coral waters. There is therefore a positive need to understand the realities: the seasons of trade winds; the behaviour of destructive winds; the special foods to be found in the tropics; the dangers of coral waters and the spe c i a l p r o b lems of navigating and anchoring there. Cruising in coral is different. Not terrifyingly so, as some sailing authors might have you believe, but different enough to warrant a general overhaul of nautical attitudes and practices as w el l as ga in in g general knowledge pertinent to that environment." POX: AN AMERICAN HISTORY., Willrich, Michael.
11 Willrich, Michael. POX: AN AMERICAN HISTORY.
New York Penguin Press 2011 1594202869 / 9781594202865 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
422 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "At the turn of the last century, a powerful smallpox epidemic swept the United States from coast to coast. The age-old disease spread swiftly through an increasingly interconnected American landscape: from southern tobacco plantations to the dense immigrant neighborhoods of northern cities to far-flung villages on the edges of the nascent American empire. (This book) offers a gripping chronicle of how the nation's continent-wide fight against smallpox launched one of the most important civil liberties struggles of the twentieth-century. At the dawn of the activist progressive era, and during a moment of great optimism about modern medicine, the government responded to the deadly epidemic by calling for universal compulsory vaccination. To enforce the law, public health authorities relied on quarantines, pesthouses, and 'virus squads' - corps of doctors and club-wielding police. Though these measures eventually contained the disease, they also sparked a wave of popular resistance among Americans who perceived them as a threat to their health and to their rights. At the time, antivaccinationists were often dismissed as misguided cranks, but Willrich argues that they belonged to a wider legacy of American dissent that attended the rise of an increasingly powerful movement. While a well-organized antivaccination movement sprang up during these years, many American resisted in subtler ways - by concealing sick family members or forging immunization certificates. 'Pox' introduces us to memorable characters on both sides of the debate, from Henning Jacobson, a Swedish Lutheran minister whose battle against vaccination went all the way to the Supreme Court, to C.P. Wertenbaker, a federal surgeon who saw himself as a medical missionary combating a deadly - and preventable - disease. As Willrich suggests, many of the questions first raised by the turn-of-the-century antivaccination movement are still with us: How far should the government go to protect us from peril? What happens when the interest of public health collide with religious beliefs and personal conscience?" Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some light edge creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine.
