CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
2 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Small faint scuff at top of fore-edge of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS., Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma.
4 Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma. TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS.
New Directions, New York, 1986, first edition.
123 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0811210103 "Relatively unknown in the West, (this book) is a fascinating, though often baffling, archaic collection of 186 'questions' about the origins of life and the meaning of a wide vari ety of happenings startling and mundane, earthly and celestial. Because the poem has no single narrative thread, the most informed speculation posits group authorship by a number of roving Taoist scholars, each contributing riddles about t h e h i s t o r y and legends of his own province as well as ironically posed inquiries into the nature of the universe. The enigmatic and sometimes Sphinxlike conundrums may have been originally intended for debate - to give the popular and promi ne nt di al ec ti ci an s of over 2,300 years ago a tool for honing their convoluted responses. But however the poem took on its present shape and content, it remains the single most comprehensive catalogue of ancient Chinese mythology and pre-Imp eri al l ege nd in exi ste nce . This translation....combines sound scholarship with an artful grace to produce the 186 questions in couplets that both tease and enchant. In addition to a historical introduction that clearly explains what is known and no t know n a bou t th e po em, Field provides extensive notes to help the English-speaking reader understand the basic Chinese myths alluded to in the questions." The poem is presented in Chinese 'li-shi' script opposite the English text. P revio us o wn er's chop (st amp p n hal f-ti tle page, tiny bump to top edge of both boards. 208 pp, 11" H. "J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) renowned author of 'The Hobbit', 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmarillion', was an artist in pictures as well as in words. Though he often remarked that he had no talent for drawing, his art has charmed his readers and has been exhibited to large and appreciative audiences the world over. In fact, his talent was far more than he admitted, and his sense of design was natural and keen. (This book) explores Tolkien's art at length, from his childhood paintings and drawings to his final sketches. At its heart are his illustrations for his books, especially his tales of Middle-earth. Also examined are the pictures Tolkien made for his children, his expressive calligraphy, his love of decoration, and his contributions to the typography and design of his books. With 200 reproductions, many in full colour, this lavishly-produced book offers a perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to discover a largely unexplored aspect of J.R.R. Tolkien's character." They wer e written in the Western and Eastern Han periods (206 B.C.-220 A.D.). 'Their language is straight-forward yet not ungraceful. Delicate in objective description and tender in depicting deep emotions, they are the crown of the five-characte r - l i n e - p o etry.' (Wen-hsin tiao-lung). Dr. Kenneth P.H. Ho, after an introduction dealing with the background and the characteristics of 'The Nineteen Ancient Poems', gives a complete English translation of them. Appendices provide a sele ct io n of c ri ti ca l statements on these ancient poems and a table of textual variants. IN MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE., Poortvliet, Rien. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch.
11 Poortvliet, Rien. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch. IN MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE.
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1988, first American edition.
240 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810911264 Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "(T)he fascinating saga, told with pen and brush, of a rural family in old Holland - the Poortvliets - going back ten generations to Cornelis Adriaensz, who died in 1649. Characteristically evocative, Poortvliet's work is remarkable in its ability to touch us. With equal skill he conveys the coziness of a comfortable house set in a bleak and brooding snowy landsc ape and the light-hearted revelry of a winter carnival. (This book) does not conjure up a romantic vision of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills. There was hardship and hard work, like that of the young cowherd se e n h ere - an eight-year-old boy whose long and lonely day began at four o'clock in the morning and only ended when he returned home at six o'clock in the evening. We learn of the many Dutch families in the early days who endured the deaths of fi ve , t en , or more babies, and of their joy in those that survived. We even learn of such nocturnal annoyances as the families of noisy mice that shared the straw mattresses of the country folk. (The author's) colorful heritage, traced back to th e 1 60 0s , w hile it does not include rich and famous people, does include characters and stories to rival those of a soap opera in their intricacy and human interest. Those accounts are based on ancient documents such as birth and death certifica tes and ch urch records, some of which are reproduced. Exploring his own roots, Poortvliet captures the beauty in the faces and in the lives of the country people of Holland as he illuminates their odyssey into modern times." 12 Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch. DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST.

208 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810933098 Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "Characteristically evocative, the words and images in 'Daily Life in Holland' are rich in detail and delicate in colo ration, and perhaps the most beautiful of any of Poortvliet's works to date. In this fascinating saga, he recreates the lives of his forebears as they toiled and celebrated their way through daily existence. He does not conjure up a romantic v i s i o n of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills! There were adversity and hard work, and we learn that 1566 was an extraordinary year in Holland, marked by famine and plague, great freezes, floods and droughts, comets a nd e ar thquakes, and an invasion by the Spanish as well. Poortvliet's colorful account unfolds before us to reveal how ordinary men, women, and children lived: what kinds of clothes they wore, what their houses were like, what they ate and how th ey coo ked . How did they celebrate Christmas? What did the people do for a livng and what kind of money did they have? What did a girl's engagement ring look like? How many different kinds of swords and firearms did they have? Exploring hi s ow n r oots , Po ortvliet captures the beauty of everyday life and livelihood in turbulent sixteenth-century Holland." 224 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810936488 Beautifully illustrated throughout in colour by the Dutch artist well known for his books on gnomes and Holland. "Starting in present-day Holland, Poortvliet observes a nd illustrates, the many animals who inhabit this earth, in great detail. He may catch a rabbit, lynx, or partridge sauntering by, or admire a doe with her young right beneath him. He takes notice of foxes, deer, and wolves, and portrays them r e a l istically and convincingly. (He) continues on his journey to the sixteenth century, a time when humans coexisted with such predators as bears, lynx, and wolves, and other wild animals. His journey ends with the people and animals of the Ic e Ag e, a nd he imagines the now-extinct mammoth and other creatures in their natural habitat - the giant deer, the wooly rhinoceros, the wild horse, the auroch, and the cave lion. Exploring the boundaries of time travel and studying the wild anim al s a t c los e range, (he) documents their daily habits and rituals. His colorful account unfolds before us to reveal the many interesting facts about the mammals: How much bigger is an elk than a deer or a doe? How do you subdue a rhinoceros? How man y po unds is a mammoth's daily food intake?" Previous owner's signed bookplate on front free endpaper, tiny dint on bottom edge of each board. 154 sonnets (one per page) + alphabetical listing of sonnets. Oblong (5 5/8" H x 8 5/8" D). "Shakespeare's sonnets, were they all that he had ever written, would have ensured him immortality. Read by every succeeding generation, they continue to challenge, stimulate, and sometimes mystify. The calligrapher Tom Gourdie, fascinated by the beauty of Shakespeare's language, has matched his own mastery of letterforms to the poet's mastery of words and has handscripted the 154 sonnets in a fluent, dramatic italic style, drawn with a beautiful craftsmanship. Each sonnet is begun with a unique decorative initial, in a rich, contrasting red. Calligraphers everywhere will welcome this rare example of their art, and will want to use it as inspiration for their own work. In Tom Gourdie's fine presentation of this book, truly a labour of love, Shakespeare's sonnets take on a new vitality and can be read afresh, a pleasure both to the eye and to the spirit." 15 Soong, Stephen C., editor. SONG WITHOUT MUSIC: CHINESE TZ'U POETRY.
Renditions / Chinese University Press, Hong Kong, (1980).
282 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Chinese calligraphy, music examples, 2 color plates. "Tz'u originally was written to music to be sung; the word itself means 'song words' in Chinese. While the literary aspect of tz'u is derived from the five and seven-syllable lines of regulated verse or shih, its musical element can be traced back to the triumph, in the early T'ang dynasty, of popular foreign songs over native ones. Tz'u, in fact, is an overflow of shih. When T'ang poetry could no longer express adequately man's more refined and delicate feelings, and when the simple quatrains could not longer contain the spirit of song, it was natural for a new genre to emerge...The approach of the present volume of essays and translations of tz'u is an intimate rather than a pedantic one, for its purpose is to take the poetry-loving reader, as it were, by the hand, and welcome him into a new world. It is an attempt to present a comprehensive view of tz'u poetry, its intrinsic qualities as well as the achievements of individual writers. Through the nine interpretive essays and the eight translations of individual tz'u poets in the present anthology, the reader will gain a deeper in sight in to tz'u poetry and see its continuity in the history of Chinese literature."
