177 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "She was notorious for taking off her clothes. Movies, magazines and TV shows, and fame as 'the girl with the million dollar chest' after her breasts were insured by Lloyds of London, helped create her very successful career as celebrity stripper, 'Annie Ample'. But behind all the hype was a real person. (Annie) looks back candidly on her turbulent childhood in a small town in California and her showbiz start as a 'go-go' dancer in a local club. 'Annie Ample' was the ingenuous character she devised to exploit the sex industry rather than be exploited by it. Whether she is recalling her narrow escapes from lascivious film producers, her famous plastic surgery, her wild nights with the jet set or the stampede of the paparazzi when she went sunbathing at Cannes, Annie's irrepressible sense of humor and earthy revelations make her story a compelling read, even when it borders on the tragic." What are the implications of such a relationsh ip with sacred beings for the religious life of a community? Using these questions as his point of departure, Babb explores the ritual culture of image-worshiping Svetambar Jains. Jainism is, aside from Buddhism, the only surviving exampl e o f I n d i a's ancient non-Vedic religious traditions. It is known and celebrated for its systematic practice of non-violence and for the rigor of the asceticism it promotes. 'Absent Lords' sheds light on a little-known religious tradition an d d em on s tr at es t hat divine 'absence' can be as rich as divine 'presence' in its possibilities for informing a religious response to the cosmos." 5 Ball, Edward. THE INVENTOR AND THE TYCOON: A GILDED AGE MURDER AND THE BIRTH OF MOVING PICTURES.

447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. 160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." "The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because earlier publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. (The 4 volume set, of which this is Volum e 1 ) i s to be the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. It presents for the first time a true balance between German and Soviet accounts. (The authors) have undertaken a huge research effort to g le a n th e t rue events of this air war. Thanks to their painstaking research and brilliant analysis of German archival material, some of the first Soviet Air Force records ever to be seen in the West, and new information from German and Soviet a irm en , the y are able to present many valuable insights into the vast Eastern Front aerial struggle." "The Sonoran Desert of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico sizzles in the sun. Daytime temperatures common ly soar above 120F. The parched, mineral earth gets less than three inches of rainfall a year on average; some years, none at all. Yet this is one of the most fascinating and beautiful places in North America. A large variety of plants - cr e o s o t e bush, the fabled boojum, and numerous other cacti and succulents - flourish here, as do a wealth of birds, insects, and small mammals. Man is an uneasy resident, and, although modern cities such as Phoenix and Tucson survive on its fri ng es , th e na tural heart of the desert still rejects all but the most intrepid sojourners. Two who know this desert well are (the author and photographer of this book). Interwoven together, the personal visions of these two remarkable observers ev oke t he So nor an Desert with extraordinary power. 9 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." "Designed at the height of the Cold War to be the ultimate surveillance platform, the SR-71 was operated exclusively by the USAF's 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. In this new edition of Paul Crickmore's best-selling history, the fruits of an alliance between NASA and the Lockheed project (which began when NASA engineers lent a ha nd at Edwards AFB way back in 1967) are reviewed, as the 'space men' use the SR-71 for experiments on the outer edge of the atmosphere. Also new is a complete list of USAF missions flown out of Kadena, detailing duration, pilots, Reconnais s a n c e S y s tems Officers, altitude, etc. It is a fascinating addition to the history of operational flights over North Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, North Korea, Yemen, the Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iran and Cuba....Also revealed are details o f fl ig ht s c on du ct ed from Beale AFB, in California and RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, England, into the Arctic Circle and over the Baltic to monitor the movements of Soviet nuclear submarines. Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Soft Cover Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." Presidio, San Rafael, California, 1980.
198 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0891410821 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The heroism of William Darby and his Rangers in World War II has become legend. Experts at amphibious landings, night attacks, and clos e combat, they led the assaulting troops in the initial North Africa landings, fought in Tunisia, landed through concentrated hell at Gela, and were in on the final kill at Messina. At Sorrento they stood off forces that outnumbered them by a t l e a s t eight to one, and they spearheaded the desperate struggle at Anzio. This is Darby's own story of those climactic days, as dictated, just a few months before his death, to his friend General William H. Baumer. Baumer has added backgr ou nd in fo rm at ion about the war and on Darby's life, plus a summary of the exploits of other Ranger units. Darby was a combat leader in the highest tradition of the United States Army - a forceful, charismatic man who inspired loyalty and in t urn ga v e l oya lty to his troops. He refused battlefield promotions three times in order to stay with his Rangers. During his colorful and brilliant career, he received ten high military decorations, and was posthumously promoted to brigadier gen eral ." He found or improvised shelter at night, carefully warmed himself during the day tim e , d ran k f ro m s mal l pools of melted snow and ice, and slowly but steadily made his way toward civilization. Suffering from exhaustion and on the verge of collapse, he found a hot spring that provided him with temporary warmth and ins ects to ea t. Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1988 071592876 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
(259) pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The first great international gold rush began in 1849 after news about spectacular discoveries in California leaked out to the rest of the world, setting off one of the largest peace-time migrations in history. The final one, using dog-teams as well as aircraft, took place in the wilderness of northwestern Ontario in the Roaring Twenties, when corporate manoeuvring had nearly eclipsed the fierce individualism so central to the idea of the gold rush. The period saw every type of person - saints and charlatans, nobles and peasants, plutocrats and radicals, Asians, Blacks and Europeans - racing off to the Rocky Mountains, Australia, South Africa or Alaska and the Yukon. As they gained cumulative force, the gold rushes produced certain stock characters: the happy-go-lucky millionaire, the golden-hearted prostitute, the aging veteran of some previous frontier search for one final fling. In every instance, the gold rush was not merely an anarchic type of economic development but a signal and informing event in the history of the host country. In nearly all cases, there was great tension between the forces of authority on the one hand and the miners' instinctual libertarianism on the other. Often the result was violence - followed by reform. (This book) throws new light on a popular subject and ties part of one country's history and folkore to that of the others."
