Edmonton, Alberta Executive Sport Publications 1981 0919035094 / 9780919035096 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Photography by Robert Semeniuk.
144 pp, oblong (8 9/16" H x 10 1/16" D. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Rodeo is perhaps the world's greatest test of physical endurance and raw heroism. It is the participant, the cowboy, who has excited both young and old for decades. Year in and year out, these men test their strength against the power of animals in such rodeo events as steer wrestling and bronc riding. Sometimes they are rewarded for their efforts by a winning time, but often they receive little more than the appreciative applause of an enthusiastic audience before heading down the road to the next rodeo. What motivates these men to keep up such a grueling schedule? What has kept the tradition alive for so long? Through the combined effort of a gifted writer and an expert photographer, the exciting and entertaining world of the rodeo cowboy comes alive." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor edge wrinkling - crease at bottom edge of rear flap.

247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
312 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. Fold-out map. A facsimile of the edition published by Cassell and Company, London, 1916. "When Inspector Burton Deane left for Regina in 1883 to join the staff of the headquarters of the Royal North-West Mounted Police, he was told in Ottawa that he would find the Mounties an 'armed mob'. He was not disappointed. The ten-year-old force did not have one standing order or regulation, and it was his responsibility to compose regulations for the force, and to establish Mounted Police law. As adjutant to the commissioner and supervisor of the Regina post, he was responsible for establishing all administrative procedure, and he was always at the nerve-centre of every major development on the Prairies in those years. He administered the white man's dealings with the Indians, and in 1885 the captured Riel was put in his custody. His intimate contact with his prisoner makes fascinating reading. But shortly afterward, conflict with the controversial and difficult new commissioner, Lawrence Herchmer, led to his transfer to Lethbridge, where he was Supervisor for 'fourteen happy years'. His ardent persecution of cattle and horse thieves and smugglers led him to arrest a good friend of a Dominion Cabinet minister, winning him a transfer to the remote and tiny outpost of Maple Creek. There he patrolled a large section of the Canadian Pacific Railway, until friendlier forces in government assigned him to command of the post at Calgary." Faint line indentation across spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, knife cut across spine - archivally taped on inside, very small tear at bottom of rear flap-fold - archivally taped.
