MY LIFE IN ART., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
2 Bemelmans, Ludwig. MY LIFE IN ART.
New York Harper & Brothers 1958 Hard Cover Very Good Good Ludwig Bemelmans.
64 pp + 32 pp of colour reproductions of gouaches and oils done between 1954 and 1958, 12 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations throughout text, plus tipped-in colour frontispiece and one other, followed by colour plates. Ludwig Bemelmans was famous for his 'Madeline' books. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans." Very light edge wear with a few tiny dents, four letter pen notation at top of front pastedown, light browning to edges of free endpapers. Dust jacket has light browning, a few small edge chips, is price-clipped, one or two small edge tears with creases, light soiling/rubbing, light water stains at top/bottom edge of spine.

He wasn't big enough to row or old enough to hammer. WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
12 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corners of boards, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at top inside edge.

To start with, she worked as an illustrator and drew Valentine and Christmas cards, as well as black and white pictures for various books. Her great breakthrough came in 1877 when she met Edmund Evans and showed him the collection of drawings and poems that she had assembled. These were published by Evans as 'Under the Window', which was a runaway success and was followed by the many childrens books for which she is best known. Among these are 'Mother Goose', 'The Language of Flowers', 'Marigold Garden', 'A Apple Pie' and 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', to name but a few. This biography, written by her friends M.H. Spielman and G.S. Layard, was published in 1905, just four years after her death. It tells the story of her life and relates the romantic circumstances of her great friendship with John Ruskin. It is required reading for all followers of Kate Greenaway and is accompaneid by over 50 colour illutrations by the artist as well as many black and white and line illustrations."
