256 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "After a short spell in a light bomber squadron flying Hawker Harts, (Gibbs) was transferred to the Fleet Air Arm, serving on the aircraft carriers 'Furious' and 'Courageous' , mastering the Shark and Swordfish. Another move took Gibbs to Gosport as a flying instructor, before he eventually joined a torpedo squadron. His readable and entertaining narrative describes a rapid and eventful progression from cadet to Flight Commander of a Beaufort squadron, whilst also giving a clear impression of the society he lived in and the RAF itself, struggling to come to terms with the dramatic changes war wrought upon a once peaceful country. (A)lso illustrates Gibbs' increasing dedication to the airborne torpedo as a means for attacking coastal shipping. His articulate account - the vivid impression of a young airman at war - conveys a clear picture of the evolving tactics of Beaufort squadrons as they adapted swiftly to changing circumstances and demands." Soft crease at top corner of free rear endpaper. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing to glossy surfaces.

14 Jenson, Latham B. Foreword by W.A.B. Douglas. TIN HATS, OILSKINS & SEABOOTS: A NAVAL JOURNEY, 1938-1945.
Robin Brass Studio, Toronto, 2000, reprint.
312 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 9" D), soft cover. ISBN 1896941141 B&w drawings by the author/artist. "As a boy growing up on the Prairies in the Depression, (the author) dreamed of going to sea, became a sea cadet at HMS Undaunted in Calgary, and in 1938 joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an officer cadet, training with the Royal Navy in Britain until 1941. His wartime service began on HMS Renown in the South Atlantic, searching for the Graf Spee, and off Norway engaging the battleships Scharnh orst and Gneisenau. He lost all his possessions when Renown was damaged by shellfire. He served on HMS Matabele and HMS Hood, leaving that ship weeks before she was sunk with all hands in battle with the Bismarck. Returning to Canada in la t e 1 9 4 1 , he was appointed to HMCS Ottawa, a destroyer on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic. A year later she was sunk with great loss of life in a battle with German submarines. Jenson was among the lucky ones plucked from the Atlant ic b y a B ri ti sh corvette. He joined HMCS Niagara as executive officer, and in late 1943 briefly commanded the corvette Long Branch before going on to the destroyer Algonquin as executive officer, taking part in raids on German ships, includi ng the T irp itz , a nd being one of the ships to open fire on the shore defences in the invasion of Normandy. Algonquin completed the war raiding German shipping and escorting Allied convoys to Murmansk. The book is illustrated with L.B. Jenson' s l umin ous lin e dr awin gs, as well as sketches and diagrams illustrating uniforms, insignia and so on. His book is a valuable record not only of how ships fought the battles of the Atlantic, but of life on board, where men had to live under d iffi cult cond ition s for week s on end - all seen through the eyes of an energetic and engaging young officer." FRONTLINE AIRLINE: TROOP CARRIER PILOT IN WORLD WAR II., Lester, John R. (Bob), Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (Ret.)
15 Lester, John R. (Bob), Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (Ret.) FRONTLINE AIRLINE: TROOP CARRIER PILOT IN WORLD WAR II.
Sunflower University Press, Manhattan, KS, 1994.
192 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0897451791 B&w photographs. "John R. Lester describes his work as a reminiscence - after 50 years - of being 19- or 20-something, with wings, in the whirlwind of war. His narrative reflects the innocent optimism, the adventure, and the youthful sense of immortality of the time - from induction through Cadet training to become a pilot. This is a personal odyssey into combat in a Troop Carrier Group of the 5th Air Force, from New Guinea to J a p a n . Troop Carrier, says the author, 'was a different breed of cat'. Although they hauled 'everything imaginable', their primary purpose was to put paratroopers and gliders into combat behind enemy lines and to maintain a conduit of supply fo r co mb at s i tutations, initially using the C-47 Skytrain and then the C-46 Commando." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book is slightly cocked, very light edge wear, small area of surface paper loss o n f ro nt cov er due t o sticker removal. NORTHERN ARMAGEDDON: THE BATTLE OF THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM, MacLeod, D. Peter
16 MacLeod, D. Peter NORTHERN ARMAGEDDON: THE BATTLE OF THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM
Vancouver, British Columbia Douglas & McIntyre 2008 1553654129 / 9781553654124 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
379 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour illustrations (maps, plates). "(T)he story of the Siege of Quebec and its climax, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. A brief bloody affair, it brought a brutal end to the Seven Years' War in North America, the first truly global conflict - and the first truly modern one - waged against civilians and cities as well as soldiers and fortifications. This is a story of strategy, generals and geopolitics - and ordinary people. A British sailor, an American irregular, a French officer, a Huron warrior, a nun who tended the wounded; their impressions, captured in letters and journals, give us a new, more human view of the battle, one often absent from the history books. By day's end September 13 (1759), Wolfe was dead and Montcalm dying, the British victorious and the French on the run. France's New World empire was finished. The battle was over, but the musket volleys fired that morning continue to echo through our world. The hardships of North America's First Nations, the birth of Canada, and the rise of the United States can all be traced to that morning's actions. Our world was created on that field 250 years ago. Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very small wrinkle at bottom of spine.

20 Robertson, Terence. WALKER, R.N. THE STORY OF CAPTAIN FREDERIC JOHN WALKER, C.B., D.S.O. AND THREE BARS, R.N. CADET EDITION.
Evans Brothers, London, 1960 reprint, Cadet edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "According to an Admiralty statement the Battle of the Atlantic, which raged for five and a half years, was 'the most protracted and bitterly fought campaign in which the British Empi re and her Allies have ever been engaged'. That this battle was triumphantly won was the direct result of the offensive tactics of the Navy's 'little ships', inspired by the brilliant exploits of one man who, the Admiralty stated, 'did more t o f r e e the Atlantic of the U-Boat menace than any other single officer'. Here is this man's story - the life and death of Captain Frederic John Walker, R.N., Companion of the Order of the Bath, and holder of the D.S.O. and three Bars. Worki ng w i th t he c omplete co-operation of Captain Walker's family and with full access to private papers and diaries, the author traces the career of this indomitable sailor from his early years as a midshipman in H.M.S. Ajax to his last voyage in th e s lo op Sta rli ng. This is a magnificent and inspiring record of devotion to duty and unfaltering courage.
