BLACK MOSES: THE REAL UNCLE TOM., Beattie, Jessie L.
2 Beattie, Jessie L. BLACK MOSES: THE REAL UNCLE TOM.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1957 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
215 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w illustrations. "This is the story of the life of Josiah Henson, an ex-slave who escaped to Canada and founded the Negro refugee colony in Dawn, Ontario. Using his own memoirs and other contemporary sources, Miss Beattie has given us an authentic and exciting picture of this arresting figure in Canadian life, whose early years provided Harriet Beecher Stowe with material for her character of Uncle Tom. In its mixture of tragedy and happiness, of hope and despair, of grim struggle and triumphant achievement, this is the saga of an oppressed race in its slow and painful advance to freedom, in which Canada played so notable a part." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light soiling - mainly on rear panel, a few small edge tears and tiny chips, scuffing at bottom part of spine, small light stain on front flap-fold - shows mainly on inside surface.

7 Kenney, Gerard. LAKE OF THE OLD UNCLES.
Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
193 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781550028027 B&w photographs, reproductions. "Recounts a journey that began three-quarters of a century ago in a small village inn nestled in the Laurentian Hills of Quebec. One day, the journey will end at the village cemetery, just one kilometre from the inn. The traveller is the author. The trip is not long, but is rich in rural and natural experiences along the way. Gerard Kenney takes us along the route that led him to build a lone log cabin on the small and inaccessible Lake of the Old Uncles. No roads reach the pond, only a footpath. The hours spent in the quietude of the forest cabin have resulted in the author's personal philosophy, which was inspired by his hero, Henry David Thoreau. (He) shares with his readers the evolution of his philosophy through his personal experiences with the people and the wilderness flora and fauna he has encountered on his life's journey." Peterborough, Canada Broadview 1989 0921149395 / 9780921149392 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
273 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/3" D. B&w photographs, map. "(P)resents a compelling view of one of the great travellers of (the 20th) century and of the last days of 'the Old North'. A mining engineer and almost the archetype of the practical man, George Douglas was in 1911 given the task of searching for minerals in the watershed of the Coppermine, above the Arctic Circle. He never found great wealth, but developed a lifelong affinity with the North itself: a fragile land of subtle beauty about to be changed forever by the advance of southern 'civilization'. During that year and the next he lived a life of extraordinary adventure, became the first white man to make contact with many of the Inuit of the region, and became involved with the great figures of that last generation of Northern adventurers. He became a reluctant father figure to Jack Hornby, the doomed romantic who would starve to death with Harold Adlard and Edgar Christian in 1927. Douglas knew as well Robert Service; in one of the more grisly episodes recounted in this book, he and Service are among a group that discovers the bodies of two dead trappers in an isolated cabin. This book, illustrated with 116 of Douglas's own extraordinary photographs, makes that place, that era, and this remarkable man come to life again." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling.

Its many pictures provide a panoramic view of the province's architecture from the late 18th century to the Victorian era. Its text combines architectural description with the story of some of the people who built and used these buildings, including (no doubt) some local folkore along the way. In other words, it is not a book for scholars; but rather, a book intended for all people who love old buildings and a book which may help to inspire interest among those who may never have stopped to look at an old building before." 11 Newcomb, Rexford. OLD KENTUCKY ARCHITECTURE. COLONIAL, FEDERAL, GREEK REVIVAL, GOTHIC, AND OTHER TYPES ERECTED PRIOR TO THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES.
Bonanza, New York, reprint (copyright 1940).
Unpaginated foreword, introductory essay and list of plates plus 130 b&w plates (photographs, plans, drawings) and frontispiece, 4to (12 1/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. "Forming originally a part of the state of Virginia, Kentucky was peopled la rgely from Virginia and nearby colonies; thus the economic system, the social fabric and the cultural outlook of Kentucky resembles these features of life in the Old Dominion. Bringing with them a love of classic architecture engendered by as s o c i a t ion with the great houses in the valleys of the James and the Potomac, it is no surprise to discover that a definite classic spirit premeates the more formal types of architecture in Kentucky. In the early pioneer period, of necessity, r ec ou rs e wa s had to primitive forms. Beginning with the log cabin with its 'wattle-and-daub' chimney, architectural expression in Kentucky passed through successive improvements, culminating eventually in the great classic-porticoed brick mansio ns whi ch to th is day lend so much charm to the countryside. Architecture in Kentucky parallels the career of architecture upon our Atlantic seaboard. There is this difference, however, that while architecture in Kentucky reflects most of the v ogu es a nd fas hion s o f the seaboard forms, it records these changes somewhat belatedly. That is to say a style or a fashion well known in the maritime states will often not make its appearance in Kentucky for from ten to thirty years. Once acc lima ted, how ever , suc h vo gues are as likely to persist here as in other areas of America." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, heavy fading to color at top edge of boards, light fading to color on spine. Dust jacket has light wear and w rnkli ng a t top /botto m edg e of spine and flap-folds, creasing on top 3" of spine, slight browning on spine, light rubbing, one small tear archivally taped. THE PIONEERS, 1825-1900: THE EARLY BRITISH TEA AND COFFEE PLANTERS AND THEIR WAY OF LIFE., Weatherstone, John.
15 Weatherstone, John. THE PIONEERS, 1825-1900: THE EARLY BRITISH TEA AND COFFEE PLANTERS AND THEIR WAY OF LIFE.
Quiller, London, 1986, first edition.
224 pp, 4to (11 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0907621686 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions. "One hundred and fifty years ago the British planter arriving in India or Ceylon could hardly expect a bungalow, a deep freeze, a television - let alone an orderly estate of tea bushes. The scene would rather be the dense tropical jungle, disease-carrying insects, and prowling beasts of prey. He would work and live alone, and bivoua c for months on end under tropical rains with but the scantiest of provisions....Nearly a million acres of jungle were felled for tea and coffee between 1825 and 1900. Who knows how many animals were shot for the pot and for sport during t h e c l e a r i ng operations in the same period. When opeing out a new plantation, the planter lived under nothing more than the broad leaves of a tree; or in a crude mud and wattle hut; with progress in later years, came the log cabin, and by th e ye a r 19 00 a l ar ge and comfortable bungalow. British Raj characters proliferated and stamped an indelible mark on areas now run by Indians and Sri Lankans. John Weathestone, who was a planter in Ceylon, has done much research covering the pr e 1 90 0 per iod , p utt ing together a description in words and pictures of how these pioneers lived....Apart from his personal reminiscences, he has used a wide reading among a library of early books to bring the pioneers back to life. With a va st a rra y of n earl y 35 0 of the most interesting illustrations from these sources reproduced, many in colour, the result is beautifully and graphically supported."
