2 Barris, Ted. BEHIND THE GLORY.
Toronto Macmillan Canada 1992 0771591764 / 9780771591761 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
358 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, "When war broke out in September 1939, the Allied air forces had few combat aircraft and even fewer military pilots ready to fight. It was clear that air superiority would determine the outcome of the war, so in December 1939, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada created the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Most of the air crew training took place in Canada. The success of the plan depended on its instructors. At the beginning of the war bush pilots, barnstormers, commercial pilots, crop-dusters, amateur aviators, and First World War veterans were called up to begin the huge task of training. Most of their students went to the front, but some were kept in Canada to instruct the next generation of recruits. At its peak, the plan administered 107 schools and 184 other units at 231 sites across Canada, operated 11,000 aircraft, and employed 104,000 men and women. The BCATP trained 200,000 air crew in less than five years. FDR and Winston Churchill called their work 'the decisive factor' in the war." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on front flap.

SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND., Borawski, John.
3 Borawski, John. SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND.
London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

SUCCESSFUL JUMPING: TRAINING YOUR HORSE WITH GRIDWORK., Bush, Karen and Irving, Ross.
8 Bush, Karen and Irving, Ross. SUCCESSFUL JUMPING: TRAINING YOUR HORSE WITH GRIDWORK.
Crowood, Marlborough, 1997, reprint.
157 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1852237635 "All horses and ponies have some aptitude for jumping, but it is up to the rider to develop the natural talent that a horse may possess in order for it to realize its full po tential. One of the most effective ways of doing this is through using gridwork, a logical system of training that increases the horse's confidence, encourages the development of good musculature, and improves the horse's accuracy, agility a n d t e c h nique. It can be adapted to suit the individual needs of any horse and can be introduced at any stage of its jumping career. The benefits of gridwork are beyond dispute, but too often it is the subject of misunderstanding and, cons e qu en tl y , ab us e, which can lead to the onset of problems rather than to the resolution of them. In (this book), gridwork is demystified and explained in a way that will enable anyone to develop a safe and effective training programme. Ther e is pra cti ca l ins tru cti on and advice on prepatory work, choosing equipment, building fences, calculating distances, and developing gridwork exercises; there is also an invaluable trouble-shooting chapter, which aims to identify the causes of an y p robl ems and s ugge st r emed ies. At every stage, from the basics to the more advanced, the reader is encouraged to consolidate progress and move forward in a step-by-step, logical fashion towards improved performance and, ultimately, grea ter suc cess. Cl earl y w ritte n and prof usely illustrated with photographs and explanatory line-drawings, this book is the most up-to-date and comprehensive work on the subject of gridwork yet published." 199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.
