"Examines the history of the Chemistry Department at the University of Toronto from its beginnings in 1843, when it was housed in simple quarters in the parliament buildings on Front St reet and had just one faculty member. During the founding era (1843-1920) three British gentlemen professors guided the department through four homes; between 1920 and 1960 three Canadian heads built a highly influential department. Since 1960 eight chairmen have effectively managed a growing and diverse department while it ventured into exciting new fields and emerging sub-disciplines. New faculty, new programs, new locations, and a Nobel Prize have been highlights of the past few decades. With the completion of recent renovations and additions (such as the Davenport Research Building and Garden), with its distinguished faculty, top-rate staff, and excellent students, and with its dazzling array of equipment to support research, the department's future indeed looks bright." BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
9 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

South Brunswick A.S. Barnes 1971 0498077896 / 9780498077890 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Good+
277 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(This book) was first published in 1928, and has now been reprinted in a new format. With the flick of his rod and a twist of his pen, this well-known sportsman-novelist takes you with him on his trips through inland waters. From Pennsylvania to Oregon, from the calm waters of the Delware to the rushing torrents of the Klamath River, Mr. Grey casts and strikes his way. Salmon, black bass, and steelhead trout come tumbling to his line, though none too easily. There are many disappointments and many battles lost. The author tells stories of his fishing adventures with excitement and zeal. His vivid descriptions of the places he fished and the people he fished with are filled with enthusiasm. You'll learn about his techniques for outwitting the piscatorial species and the variety of baits he experimented with. You'll read about the many types of reels and rods, and those that he used. Come with Zane Grey as he takes you to the Rogue River, the most beautiful stream in Oregon, and the coldest, deepest, and swiftest he ever fished. Read about Ken, a fellow fisherman, who followed his catch down Rocky Riffle, forgetting about the deep channel below. Feel the author's anxiety as he battles with a Chinook salmon on the line. The long tug gave him aching arms and cramped hands, but he won - a prize 57-pound beauty. The 100 illustrations, many of them full-page photographs taken by the author, give you an even fuller opportunity of following every joyous tug of the line." Book slightly twisted, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, several very small tears - one with crease, very light browning on spine and flap-folds, light rubbing with light color loss on front panel.

348 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he first complete portrait of Joey Smallwood - the most loved, feared and hated of Newfoundlanders who, through a singular will, not only changed his country's history but also held political power continuously, almost unchallenged, for twenty-one years and eight months. Smallwood was a man who, in his time, played many parts: a union organizer who became a strike breaker, a journalist who carried on a running battle with the press, a self-proclaimed socialist whose private friends included the right-wing premier of Quebec Maurice Duplessis, the Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar, and the most controversial president of the United States, Richard Nixon. He trusted no one and believed that the only way to get somewhere was to take the wheel himself. It was this singleness of mind and purpose that saw him through two bitter and hard-fought constitutional campaigns that would see Newfoundland enter Confederation as our tenth province. Horwood cuts through the hype and half-truths, the anecdotes and legend, to get at the man and his times." Very minor wrinkling at top of spine. MAYFAIR: A SOCIAL HISTORY., Kennedy, Carol.
15 Kennedy, Carol. MAYFAIR: A SOCIAL HISTORY.
Hutchinson, London, 1986, first edition.
300 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091555906 B&w plates. "For more than 250 years Mayfair has been the best address in London - rivalled now by Belgravia but still a glamorous and desirable place in which to live and work. I n this century it has had a glittering image as the playground of high society, and Mayfair is still shorthand for a moneyed way of life, though these days the money comes mainly from expense accounts and Middle East oil wells. And the des i r a b l e p roperties in the glossy ads in 'Country Life' and 'Tatler' are more likely to be offices than private homes. From its raffish Restoration origins this has been an area which boasted an extraordinary mixture of residents, from member s of C ha rl es II ' s court to Clive of India, Beau Brummell, Mrs Fitzherbert (who secretly married the Prince Regent in the drawing-room of a house in Park Street), through eminent Victorians like Disraeli and Florence Nightingale to plutocrats l ike Ba rne y B arn a to an d J.P. Morgan, and leaders of pre-war society like the Mountbattens and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Until the late nineteenth century it was also a village of all the talents, a cross-section of society where aristocrats and art isan s li ved back t o b ack a nd their neighbours included politicans, playwrights, poets and craftsmen. Finally, in this fascinating social history, Carol Kennedy looks hard at post-war Mayfair; at what happens on the real-life Monopol y bo ard w hen t he le ases fall in ." Slig ht darkening to top of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good+

16 Kimber, Stephen. LOYALISTS AND LAYABOUTS. THE RAPID RISE AND FASTER FALL OF SHELBURNE, NOVA SCOTIA: 1783-1792.
Doubleday Canada 2008 038566172X / 9780385661720 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
335 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The few hundred Loyalists who gathered at Roubalet's Tavern in New York one night in 1782 shared a nightmare of the past and a dream for the future. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, they found themselves abandoned by the king to whom they had promised their loyalty, and unwelcome in the land that had so recently been theirs. On the rocky shores of Roseway Bay on the south coast of Nova Scotia, beside one of the best harbours in the world, they would found a new and improved New York City. It would be cosmopolitan, but more refined, more royal, more loyal and certainly more exclusive than the place they were leaving forever. At first, all seemed to go according to plan. Shelburne, as it was called, quickly became the fourth-largest city in North America. At the time, Nova Scotia Governor John Parr grandly decribed it as 'the most considerable, most flourishing and most expeditious (city) ever -- built in so short a time --'. Within the decade, however, the Loyalists' dream city was well on its way to becoming a ghost town. What went wrong? This extraordinary and yet little-told episode from our nation's past is brought to exciting life. Combining painstaking research and a novelstic flair for narrative, (Kimber) charts Shelburne's 'rapid rise and faster fall' through the intertwined experiences of an eclectic collection of its early settlers, from aristocrats to freed slaves, colonial officers to local entrepreneurs." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny edge bumps to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.
