9 Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball. ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1997 0771023340 / 9780771023347 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "Toller Cranston is: six-time Canadian figure-skating champion, celebrity, costume designer, artist extraordinaire, broadcaster, choreographer of skating routines, raconteur, bon vivant, coach, world traveller, art collector, legend and enigma. In 1976 he won Olympic bronze (so why did it feel like defeat?). This book tells the story of his life after those fateful games at Innsbruck. The rise and fall of Toller's first professional ice show is described in soul-searing detail. His subsequent triumphant tour of Europe as the Skater of the Century is recounted, in contrast, with wicked humour. There are vignettes here of his encounters with the rich and famous from Leonard Bernstein to Pierre Cardin and of his life among Europe's aristocrats and bohemians. Toller has experienced the high life and the low. He has stayed in the most luxurious hotels, held court in palatial houses, sought seclusion in beautiful estates. But the hard times took their toll. In the early 1990s a combination of circumstances, including a disastrous professional association with out-of-control American skater Christopher Bowman and a lawsuit that dragged on for years (ending in complete victory for Toller), led to a personal crisis from which recovery came slowly. But even in the blackest hours, Toller's humour and creative powers never deserted him - an extraordinary self -portrait written by a uniquely gifted individual. Toller's wit, insight, and delicious way with words will entertain and astound readers whether they are skating fans or not." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

London Faber and Faber 1995 0571175260 / 9780571175260 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
165 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). "An aged prophetess at Delphi, the most sacred oracle in ancient Greece, looks back over her strange life as the Pythia, the First Lady and voice of the god Apollo. As a young virgin with disturbing psychic powers, Arieka was handed over to the service of the shrine by her parents. She has now spent sixty years as the very medium, the torn mouthpiece, of equivocal mantic utterances from the bronze tripod in the sanctuary beneath the temple. Over a lifetime at the mercy of god and priest and people she has watched the decay of Delphi's fortunes and its influence in the world. Her reflections on the mysteries of the oracle, which her own weird gifts have embodied, are matched by her feminine insight into the human frailties of the High Priest himself, a true Athenian, whose intriguing against the Romans brings about humiliation and disaster. This extraordinary short novel, left in draft at the author's sudden death in 1993, is a psychological and historical triumph. An absolutely convincing portrait of a woman's experience, something rare in Golding's oeuvre, Arieka the Pythia is one of his finest creations." Small bump to top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear, wrinkling at top of flap-folds - very light edge wear elsewhere, minor rubbing.

13 Haward, Anne. ART AND THE ROMANS. CLASSICAL WORLD SERIES.
Bristol Classical Press, London, 1999.
99 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. ISBN 1853995584 B&w photographs, drawings. "This survey for the general student looks at the art created for and by the Romans and what they wanted from it. In place of the usual historical outline approach, (it) look s at the subject by genre; the Romans' appreciation of painting, sculpture and the decorative arts, in a society where the majority of work was commissioned, was different from that of the present day. Art for a world without printing or p h o t o g r a p h y to spread visual images meant much more direct contact with the artist and influence by the patron. Drawing on literary sources as well as illustrations from many parts of the Roman world, this survey up to the time of Constan ti ne c on si de rs w ha t Romans hoped to achieve and how far they were successful. Included are suggestions for further study, a bibliography and recommended sites to view the art discussed." PAUL MANSHIP., Manship, John.
17 Manship, John. PAUL MANSHIP.
Abbeville, New York, 1989, first edition.
216 pp, folio (13 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1558590021 Beautifully illustrated in color and b&w. "From his sexy little bronze nymphs to his soaring golden 'Prometheus' at Rockefeller Center, the sculptures of Paul Manship have begu iled the public through much of this century. This dazzling monograph - as elegantly sophisticated as the artist's own oeuvre - celebrates the life's work of America's master of Art Deco.....As close to a jet setter as one could be in an e r a o f o c e an travel, Manship spent much of the early 1920s in Paris, where he was one of two American sculptors to have work included in the famous 'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes' (the show that gave us th e t er m A rt D ec o). His worldwide reputation flourished in the 1930s with monumental commissions for the Bronx Zoo, Rockefeller Center, the New York World's Fair, and a multitude of other. The age of Abstract Expressionism eventually threw Man sh ip in to e cli pse , b ut the rediscovery of Art Deco illuminated the charms of his work once again, and his sculptures are again highly admired and passionately collected. This lively biography, affectionately written by Manship's son, pr ovid es muc h ne w i nfo rmat ion abou t the artist's long and productive career. The full range of that career is made vividly clear in the striking illustrations, many never before published. Because Manship was meticulous about documenting his work, th e bo ok in clud es r are s tudi es an d plasters that no longer exist, a revelatory sampling of little-known early and late works, and pristine original views of works that have since suffered the effects of time and weather. The result i s an e ngag ing, enligh tenin g boo k that deft ly cap tures the spirit of an artist wholeheartedly devoted to the pursuit of beauty." Slight waviness to top/bottom of textblock. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear, light rubbing. Near Fine/Ver y Good

LONDON: CITY OF THE ROMANS., Merrifield, Ralph.
18 Merrifield, Ralph. LONDON: CITY OF THE ROMANS.
B T Batsford, London, 1983, first edition.
288 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0713427450 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, plans, drawings, diagrams. "Under the Roman Empire, London became a major city - valuable to Rome as port, administrative c apital and strategic base. But, despite spectacular discoveries such as that of the Temple of Mithras, the available evidence has been inconclusive on many of the basic questions that have puzzled generations of archaeologists and historians . W a s there a pre-Roman London - and if not, why not? How exactly did the city develop during the four centuries of Roman occupation? What happened between 410 and 600, during the traditional 'Dark Ages'? Over the last ten years, however, the r e sc ue e x cavations carried out in the City and in Southwark have produced a great deal more material evidence. By carefully correlating the archaeological discoveries, new and old, with the historical and numismatic evidence, it is possible to m a ke som e h is torical sense of the innumerable scraps of seemingly unconnected information. Recent excavations have also raised new questions: why were so many houses and workshops apparently abandoned in the later second century, and what is the m yst erio us d ark earth that sometimes overlies their remains and underlies late Saxon and early medieval features? These and many other fascinating questions are probed by (the author) in his magesterial study of Roman London."
