A charming illustrated tour of London at the close of the Victorian era, before the age of the motor car. Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Shows a Classification Plan for Cobourg, Proposed 20-Year Major Street Improvements for Brantford, Metropolitan Toronto Expressway Plan, Backlog Plus 5-Year Needs on King's Highways, Design Standards, Work Sheets, etc. Interior - progressively smaller soft bump at top corner of pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - small creases at corners of covers, very light edge wear, light rubbing on rear cover, several tiny and small scuffs on covers - mainly on rear cover.
