1 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. It also provides a lasting record of their lives and astonishing courage - a permanent tribute to every airman ever awarded a Victoria Cross." Very minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing.

4 Lloyd, Christopher. ST VINCENT & CAMPERDOWN. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The year 1797 witnessed two of the greatest victories in British naval history: St. Vincent and Camperdown. These battles were of decisive importance in the war against revolutionary France since the defeat of the Spanish Fleet in February, and of the Dutch Fleet eight months later, effectively frustrated the French 'Grand Strategy' of invading Ireland and England. An attempt, inspired by the Irish patriot, Wolfe Tone, had been made at the end of the previous year to land a French force in Bantry Bay, but it was a blizzard, rather than the efforts of the English navy, which forced the enemy fleet to return to Brest. The British were lucky on that occasion. They were luckier still in the spring of 1797 when the naval mutinies at Spithead, Yarmouth and the Nore had none of the disastrous consequences which might so easily have followed. (This) account gains immeasurably because the engagements are seen in the strategic context of the war. The battles themselves are described with that understanding of the personalities of the commanders, and of the tactics of their fleets, which might be expected from a professor of the Royal Navy College, Greenwich. The British admirals and their captains bear names which will always be memorable in naval history: Jervis, Nelson, Troubridge, Collingwood, Saumarez, Duncan, the notorious Bligh. These men, and the parts which they played become living to the reader through eye-witness accounts, some of them previously unpublished." Very light browning to edges of text block, bump at top corner of boards - tiny bump at bottom corner, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown. Dust jacket is peice clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds

THE DEVIL HIMSELF: THE MUTINY OF 1800., Pope, Dudley.
5 Pope, Dudley. THE DEVIL HIMSELF: THE MUTINY OF 1800.
London Alison Press/Secker & Warburg 1987 0436377519 / 9780436377518 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
186 pp, 9 1/4" H. Maps. "The corvette 'La Vaillante' was built in Bayonne in 1796, four years after the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1798, she was captured by Captain Sir Edward Pellew, renamed the 'Danae' and given a new young captain, Lord Proby. In March 1800, there was consternation in London when The Times reported the French recapture of the 'Danae' following a mutiny among her crew. Dudley Pope has pieced together the story of the mutiny from British documents and the French naval archives at Brest, where the file is labelled 'Le Diable Lui-meme' - The Devil Himself. How did the French regain possession of their captured corvette? Why did some of Lord Proby's crew risk hanging by staging a mutiny? What happened to the captain after the French took him prisoner? What became of the guilty men? What was the role of the Americans on board the ship? The whole curious story is told by an expert on the naval history of those brutal years." Previous owner's info. stamped on front endpapers, small red ink notation written at top corner of free front endpaper, very minor soiling to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edgewear, light edge wrinkling, light rubbing .

Together they present a fascinating view of sea life. Gilles Proulx has used official correspondence between the Minister of Marine and the Canadian colonial authorities, and the papers siezed on boarded vessels, as well as over one hundred log-books and personal diaries, to obtain a wealth of detail about the rigours of the colonial shipboard experience." TRAFALGAR: COUNTDOWN TO BATTLE 1803-1805., Schom, Alan.
8 Schom, Alan. TRAFALGAR: COUNTDOWN TO BATTLE 1803-1805.
Penguin, London, 1992, 2nd printing.
421 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 01401111646 B&w illustrations. "In this panoramic account of events from the creation of Napoleon's menacing flotilla to Nelson's majestic funeral Schom tells the complete story for the first time. He describes in compelling detail - and usually in the words of contemporaries - Napoleon's coronation, Prime Minister Pitt's robust response to the threat of invasion, the breakneck build-up to battle and the crucial role of Admiral Cornwallis, the 'unob t r u s i v e hero' who ought to rank with Nelson as a national saviour. Trafalgar was a moment of almost unparalleled glory for Britain; this superb piece of historical detection and vivid story-telling does it full justice at last." Interior - v er y li gh t br owning to pages, soft bump at bottom corner of first 125 pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - very light browning to edges of text block, small crease/bump at bottom corner of front cover. Very Go od

ALLIED INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1919 AND THE PART PLAYED BY CANADA., Swettenham, John.
9 Swettenham, John. ALLIED INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1919 AND THE PART PLAYED BY CANADA.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1967 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
315 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "Allied intervention (in the Russian Civil War) took place in three main theatres; Northern and Southern Russia as well as Siberia. Canadians served in all these places - in fact Canada was the major Commonwealth contributor to the intervention in Siberia - and a superficial account of the events and their political implications is contained in the official history of the Canadian Army in the First World War. John Swettenham, who drafted the Canadian account, now treats the subject in depth and in international perspective. Official British records for the period (were at the time of printing) still witheld from scholars; those in Ottawa, however, are not and these have been consulted to throw new light on the motives and actions of the intervening powers. In this critical assessment the story of the Allied operations in Russia has been written against the double background of the issues and events of the Russian Civil War itself and of the international intrigues and rivalries of the erstwhile Allies; thus the inverventionists' role can be seen in a broad perspective. The reasons for failure - so that Bolshevik Russia emerged 'thoroughly militarised - bitterly hostile' are plainly given." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling/rubbing, a few tiny scratches on front panel.

Wrens Park, n.p., 1993.
160 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778693 B&w photographs. "There were thirty-two VCs of the air during the Second World War, yet how many of their names are known today? We have all heard of the exploits of Guy Gibson a nd Leonard Cheshire, but every one of the VCs of the air is associated with deeds equally daring and courageous. In these pages you will read of the forgotten VCs like Kenneth Campbell, who torpedoed the 'Gneisnau' in the harbour of Brest f r o m a h e ight of 50 feet, racing between the flak ships at mast height. William Reid, whose citations reads: 'Wounded in two attacks, without oxygen, suffering severely from cold, his navigator dead, his wireless operator fatally injured, hi s ai rc ra f t c ri pp led and defenceless, he showed superb courage and leadership in penetrating a further 200 miles into enemy territory to attack one of the most strongly defended targets in Germany'; Flight Sergeant Middleton whose 'devotion to d uty in th e fa ce of ov erwhelming odds is unsurpassed in the annals of the Royal Air Force', to quote from the official citation. (This book) reflects the whole war in the air more graphically than any impersonal history could do. The stor y s tart s in the d ays be fore Dun kirk, and finishes a few days before the atom bombs were dropped on Japan."
