1 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.
Price: 15.00 USD

548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. It also provides a lasting record of their lives and astonishing courage - a permanent tribute to every airman ever awarded a Victoria Cross." Very minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing.

4 Bowyer, Michael J.F. 2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY, 1936-1945. (RAF)
Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

7 Hotson, Fred W. THE BREMEN.
Toronto CANAV 1988 0921022026 / 9780921022022 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
224 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The flight of the German airplane 'Bremen' from Europe to North America in 1928 was one of the milestones of aviation history. No one had flown the Atlantic in that direction and the risks were high - seven people had died in the attempt. When two Germans and an Irishman left Ireland in the 'Bremen' for New York, there were predictions of a similar fate, and when nothing was heard after 40 hours, the newspapers began preparing obituaries for the gallant crew. Suddenly a message was relayed from a remote Canadian radio station: the aircraft had force-landed on an ice-bound island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence - and the race was on to reach the stranded flyers. The 'Bremen' story is an exciting drama of courage, humour and tragedy. All sorts of people found themselves drawn to the event, from the lighthouse keeper and his family, who watched in amazement as the aircraft landed almost at their front door, to presidents and prime ministers. There were the bush pilots who were first to reach the flyers, the mechanics who tried to repair the 'Bremen', ruthless reporters competing for a scoop, and Lindbergh making a mercy flight in an attempt to save the life of pilot Floyd Bennett. Small wonder an enthusiastic journalist of those aviation-mad day called the 'Bremen' episode, 'the greatest news story of all time'." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor edge wrinkling.

THE ARCTIC: ENIGMAS AND MYTHS., Simpson-Housley, Paul.
11 Simpson-Housley, Paul. THE ARCTIC: ENIGMAS AND MYTHS.
Dundurn Press, Toronto, 1996.
144 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 1550022644 B&w maps. "....seeks to provide illustrations of Arctic mysteries and fictions which often occur as a result of misconceptions of Arctic geography. The chapters are extremely varied in subject matt er, and conclusions are in the domain of speculation. The book begins with very early examples of northern travels starting with the probable adventures of Pytheas the Greek, Brendan the Irish monk and the four medieval odysseys of Adam of B r e m e n , Nicolas of Lynn, Prince Henry Sinclair and Zeno of Venice. The next chapter addresses misconceptions of polar environments, especially illusory land and visualization of mermaids and mermen. In addition, the book deals with polar m y th s su ch a s th e open polar sea which existed only in people's minds, but nevertheless had great influence on navigation and exploration. No account of polar enigmas would be complete without reference to the Franklin expedition, the possibl e fat e of his lo st sh ip s and the debate over whether his men committed cannibalism. The book concludes with a deliberation on whether Cook or Perry acutally did reach the North Pole, hinting that perhaps neither of them reached their objectiv e. He sets the final stage of the battle with the Germans against the background of the battle between Churchill and Truman, a battle in which the stature, the rhetoric, the persuasion, even the invective of the Great Man were to prove of no avail. Eisenhower and Marshall won the day and the Iron Curtain f e l l a l o n g the frontiers from which it has never risen. While Statesmen and Supreme Commanders exchanged telegrams, lesser mortals kept up the exchange of fire as German armed resistance degenerated into the hands of the aged and the beardle ss . Corgi, London, 1973.
174 pp, mass market paperback. ISBN 0552092606 B&w photographs, map. "It was a great battle - perhaps the last great battle to be fought by the British Army. A whole German army surrendered and this led to the complete breakdown of the entire en emy defence facing the Westen Allies. But it was a political battle too - one not only designed to beat the German enemy, but also a new enemy from the East - the erstwhile Russian ally. Its aim was to break through the German defences o n t h e R i v e r Elbe so that Montgomery's men could fight their way to the Baltic coast and thus prevent the advancing Russians from moving westwards into north-west Europe. In the end, the plan was a failure, and the thousands of British soldi er s w ho h a d sl og ge d the hard, bitter road back from Dunkirk to Lubeck five years later, found that their victory was a hollow one...."
