Paddington, New York, 1977.
106 pp, + 6 pages of b&w illustrations, 11" H, soft cover. ISBN 0448221861 " 'France, armee, tete d'armee, Josephine...' These were the strangely moving, strangely revealing last words spoken by Napoleon Bonaparte as he lay dying on the isle of S t. Helena in 1821. Ever since, they have contributed to the popular heroic image of the man who commanded the loyalty of millions, conquered almost the whole of Europe and lost the woman he loved. But his will, reprinted here in facsimile a n d t r a n slated into English for the first time, throws fascinating new light on one of the most enigmatic and extraordinary figures in history. From the detailed lists of his shirts and snuff boxes to the distribution of millions of francs, fr om h i s bi tt er denunciation of the 'English oligarchy and their hired assassin' to his fervent attempts to keep the Napoleonic legend alive through his son, 'The Last Will and Testament' illustrates the contradictions of the Corsican turned Fre nch man , th e ' pet it caporal' turned 'Empereur', the man turned superman and, finally, the man." Unpaginated, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Opaque printed mylar dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "This bookwork, produced by Oakville Galleries, represents the third and final version of a photographic work begun two years ago at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Brittany, France, where it took the form of a work in situ: a 'fonds photographic' that was placed in the drawers of the castle's library to become a permanent installation. The work represents a monument to a fictional woman photographer who lived in the castle sometime in the late 19th century, and who wandered the park - especially the area around the lake - obsessively taking pictures of the landscape. Her mental health slowly deterioriated and eventually she killed herself. Her decline is illustrated in the photographs placed in the drawers in porfolio folders or boxes - ." GALLIPOLI., Moorehead, Alan. Additional text by Ann Moyal. Edited by Sarah Overton.
18 Moorehead, Alan. Additional text by Ann Moyal. Edited by Sarah Overton. GALLIPOLI.
Macmillan of Canada, Toronto, 1989, extended edition.
318 pp, small 4to (10 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771592396 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "Alan Moorehead's 'Gallipoli' is surely one of the most moving and absorbing books ever written. It is not simply a war book, an a ccount of a military campaign - the narrative takes on the quality of a literary masterpiece, the suspense of a thriller, and the purgative powers of Shakespearean tragedy. From the first major assault on the Narrows in March 1915, until the f i n a l evacuation of troops in January 1916, the campaign was one long saga of appalling blunders, missed opportunities, exhaustion and frustration. So often, for just a few moments, in a vacuum of indecision, all depended upon the inspiration of a s in gl e act of faith, and such acts were usually not forthcoming. And yet, hemmed into those few terrible areas of beach and hillside and permanently under shellfire, the most formidable acts of courage and imagination occured, not leas t am ong th e A nza cs . Alan Moorehead presents Gallipoli justly and compassionately. He describes the life each individual carved out for himself during those nine long months. He gives the overview and the personal view. At times he makes i t almo st p alat able . A nn Moyal has enhanced Moorehead's text by presenting much new and important information, together with relevant biographical detail, in boxes throughout the text. These, along with maps and poignant photographs, drawings an d pai nting s, br ing t he ch ara cters, the setting and the spirit of Gallipoli to life."
