An academic and theologian by training, this mode st young professor left Bowdoin College to accept a commission as lieutenant colonel of the Twentieth Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He fought at Antietam and Fredericksburg and then led his regiment to glory at Gettysburg, where he orde r e d t h e brilliant charge that saved Little Round Top on the afternoon of July 2, 1863, and avoided a Union catastrophe. Subsequently promoted to brigade command, (he) won a battlefield promotion to brigadier general from Ulysses S. Grant for hi s di s ti ng ui shed conduct in the assaults against Petersburg on June 18, 1864. He was held in such high esteem by his superior officers that Grant accorded him the honor of receiving the formal Confederate surrender at Appomattox; there Chamb erl ai n e nd ear ed him self to succeeding generations with his unforgettable salute to Robert E. Lee's defeated army. After the war Chamberlain served four terms as governor of his native Maine and later held the presidency of Bowdoin College."
