The history of Exshaw and its cement plant is also recorded. Traced throughout the book is the development of the Canmore Mines from 1887 to 1974 with a subjective view of the miner and his contribution to Canmore." 4 Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.)
Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." Bowman was fighting in a war, but then on Ap ril 23, 1945, David encountered an unexpected and terrible twist of events that changed his life forever. After a fairly routine enemy target attack on a munitions dump near Rangoon, Burma, his Liberator aircraft was making its way back across t h e Bay of Bengal, bringing David and his comrades back to home base for a debriefing and a beer. Ten miles from the shores of Burma, David suddenly heard his skipper say these chilling words: 'Dinghy! Dinghy! Prepare for ditching.' David Bow ma n, i n his easy, humourous style, shares his true life story experiences of that fateful day in 1945 and the days following. New York SMITHMARK 1996 0765197332 / 9780765197337 Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine Enrico Arno.
618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE RIDDLE OF THE TITANIC., Gardiner, Robin and Van der Vat, Dan.
11 Gardiner, Robin and Van der Vat, Dan. THE RIDDLE OF THE TITANIC.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1995, first edition.
312 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297815288 Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Why did Captain Smith accelerate in uniquely treacherous weather towards an exceptionally dangerous ice-field of which he had been warned many times? In t he disaster that followed more than 1,500 people died while barely 700 were saved. This book lays bare as no other the full scope of Smith's astonishing accident record and explores his motives - and the pressures on him - anew. W hat caused the hol e near the bow? The notorious iceberg cracked the plates for 300 feet along the ship's side, but the hole looks more like an explosion. Why is the position of the wreck - pinpointed by the latest technology - irreconcilabl e w i t h the Titanic's SOS calls? The authors conclude that the apparently ruthless American disaster hearings covered up the role of the ship's true owner, the arch-capitalist J.Pierpont Morgan; that the apparently dispassionate British enquiry , d om in at ed by an insider-deal ing Attorney-General, whitewashed a complacent government; and that White Star covered up its own gross negligence by bribing key witnesses. And what of the wreck itself? Here the mystery deepens. When Dr Rober t Ba lla rd - w ho first located the Ti tanic in 1895 - explored the wreck a year later he found the bulkhead not shown on any plans. The most diligent searches have since failed to trace the imposing stern nameplate with its embossed letters eight ee n i nche s h igh. T he authors have gone so far as to explore the breathtaking idea that the Titanic was replaced by her sister-ship, the seriously damaged Olympic, in a plot to recover the huge losses she ran up. The results are tantalising." T hree heav y bu mps a t to p of boards at spine, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light water mark at fore-edge of rear board. 311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.

With an accompanying text by Celtic writer Helena Paterson, (this book) begins by retracing Arthur's past life in a series of cameos from the ancient Arthurian saga. Then, mindful of our own New Age of self-discovery and awareness of the continuity of ancient wisdom, the text provides an in-depth analysis of the spiritual nature of Celtic traditions. The combination of superb graphic imagery and a dedicated, sympathetic commentary show how the Arthurian legends remain one of the classic voyages of discovery, symbolically depicting the human struggle for a spiritual evolution through physical deeds. It is a theme as relevant today as it ever was in the past." Light to moderate edge wear on boards, tiny bump at top corners. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light edge wrinkling.
