4 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

BENEATH MY FEET: THE MEMOIRS OF GEORGE MERCER DAWSON., Dawson, George Mercer. With Phil Jenkins.
6 Dawson, George Mercer. With Phil Jenkins. BENEATH MY FEET: THE MEMOIRS OF GEORGE MERCER DAWSON.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 2007, first edition.
350 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), pictorial hard cover - no dust jacket (as issued). ISBN 9780771043888 B&w photographs, maps. "George Mercer Dawson is a towering figure in Canadian history and science. Travelling by horse and canoe, he was a ground breaker in the Geological Survey's opening up of the Canadian West. In 1895, he became its director. A tough life for anyone, it was an extraordinary achievement for Dawson, who was crippled by a childhood illness that severely stunted his growth but heightened his lively spirit. An avid photographer, amateur painter, poet, and professional geologist, Dawson wrote constantly, but he never penned his memoirs. So, more than a century after his death in 1901, Phil Jenkins has lent him a hand. In Dawson's own words, Jenkins seamlessly relates the life of a great Canadian in the exciting age of exploration. It is a dazzling literary accomplishment. Dawson knew the pain of unrequited love, suffered the bite of a million mosquitoes, and yet he forged ahead, over mountainous physical odds, to become one of the most respected and enjoyed of Victorian Canadians." 265 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w illustrations, tables. "(P)rovides the first comprehensive history of the agricultural development of the Oregon Country. Based on extensive research in primary source materials including Hudson's Bay Company documents, missionary records, and military and private papers, (this book) traces the crucial transition of the Pacific Northwest from a fur-trading outpost to an agricultural settlement - a process which also saw the shift from British to American jurisdiction in the area. Gibson explores the reasons for the development of farming, describes the localities where farming took place, and discusses the degree of its success or failure, placing particular emphasis on geographical factors such as terrain, climate, and soil type. The statistical material he has compiled adds a quantitative dimension to his findings and presents important new information about the fur trade west of the Rockies." 10 Hennessey, Thomas. A HISTORY OF NORTHERN IRELAND, 1920-1996.
New York St. Martin's Press 1997 0312211120 / 9780312211127 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
347 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Book club edition. "Founded upon the partition of Ireland in 1920, Northern Ireland experienced fifty years of nervous peace under the rule of a devolved government in Belfast. This government was representative only of the majority Protestant unionist community while the Catholic minority sought union with the rest of the island. The Protestant fortress held firm until the emergence of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s, following which the province subsided into the civil unrest widely known as 'the Troubles'. Hennessey's even-handed history attempts to understand the reasons for the long history of communal division, mutual suspicion, Catholic alienation, and Protestant siege mentality. It traces the sequence of events, decade by decade, in the history of the troubled province. The great value of the book, however, is in providing an overview of events since the outbreak of the Troubles up to and including the present uncertain peace process. It is the first comprehensive history of Northern Ireland for over fifteen years and brings a contemporary perspective to historical events, taking account of the scholarship which has developed in Northern Ireland studies over the last twenty years." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling.

"If the people of Quebec claim a right to sovereignty, Inuit of Quebec argue that their right of self-determination empowers them with the choice to remain part of Quebec, of Canada, or to secede on their own. The James Bay Cree consider Hydro Quebec's 'mad plans to engineer and dam the vast ecosystem' where they have lived for centuries an affront to their own right to control their land. The Labrador Innu are struggling with both the federal and provincial governments to protect their traditional hunting territories from threats imposed by military training flights and mineral exploration. All of these are challenges. As the Native peoples of Canada are meeting t h e m , asserting their right to make choices for themselves, they stand steadfastly 'on the land' from which flow their inherent rights to self-determination." 13 Macleish, William H. OIL AND WATER: THE STRUGGLE FOR GEORGES BANK.
Boston Atlantic Monthly Press 1985 0871130076 / 9780871130075 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
304 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Georges Bank, 20,000 square miles of turbulent shoal water off Nantucket, is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, its depths populated by cod, haddock, flatfish, and scallops. Until recently it was a gathering place for immense fishing trawlers of all nations. Then the Bank also became a bone of contention for explorers in oil, pitting the great multinational companies against one another, to say nothing of federal and state governments, jostling for their share of offshore oil revenues. Georges has long been the subject of dispute between the United States and Canada, and in the fall of 1984 the International Court of Justice in the Hague awarded a large portion of the Bank to Canada. Oil-lease sales were scheduled - and cancelled. Fishermen protested to their political representatives, who protested to their governments. Over the storm-lashed and fecund waters of Georges Bank, William MacLeish has travelled many times - by trawler, by helicopter, by scientific research vessel, by airplane, and by scallop boat. His pages bring us the scientists, the fishing people, politicians, lawyers, and oilmen connected with Georges Bank." Book is slightly cocked, has minor soiling on top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small light scuff marks, light soiling/rubbing on rear panel.

"General Andrew George Latta McNaughton, P.C., C.H., C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., was a patriot who served his country diligently as scientist, inventor, soldier and stateman for more than half a century. His full-time military career began with his enlistment in the Canadian Field Artillery, where his skill and ingenuity as a gunner earned him, by the war's end, the rank of brigadier-general and command of the Canadian Corps Heavy Artillery. His interest in science resulted in the invention of the cathode ray direction finder - the direct forerunner of radar - in 1923. (Volume 2) describes McNaughton's career in the Second World War from his appointment as Inspector General of the troops mobilizing to form the 1st Canadian Division until the end of 1943, when he was removed from command of the First Canadian Army. McNaughton had antagonized (General Sir Alan) Brooke by his unceasing fight for Canadian autonomy. (Canadian Defence Minister) Ralston undermined his position by detaching a corps and sending it to Italy. With that policy established, McNaughton said, it would be better for Ralston to put someone in charge who believed in it; he himself did not. Nor could McNaughton have served under Montgomery after the latter, in highhanded fashion, had refused McNaughton access to his own troops in Sicily. (Volume 3) begins with McNaughton's return from the overseas command in 1944, (following his career as governor-general, Minister of Defence,) delegate to the United Nations and member of its Security Council and Atomic Energy Commission; he was president of the Canadian half of the Canadian-U.S. Joint Board of Defence; and he was chairman of the Canadian section of the International Joint Commission, a body established to deal with water problems between Canada and the United States."
