METAL CANVAS: CANADIANS AND WORLD WAR TWO AIRCRAFT NOSE ART., Fochuk, Stephen M.
1 Fochuk, Stephen M. METAL CANVAS: CANADIANS AND WORLD WAR TWO AIRCRAFT NOSE ART.
St. Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 1999 1551250136 / 9781551250137 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
191 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photographs. "Airplane nose art evolved out of necessity for identifying 'friendlies' from enemy aircraft, which quickly became a powerful means of self-expression for military pilots and their crews. From national insignia, squadron markings and number/letter combinations nose art evolved into more personalized artwork, and individual pilots began sporting colourful, even outrageous schemes. Squadrons often used a special crest or colour scheme to identify aircraft in the squadron. This was an aid to groundcrews as well and helped them prepare to service their incoming aircraft during battle." Contents: Hurricanes; P-40s; Spitfires; Beaufighters; Colour Panels; Mosquitos; Typhoons and Tempests; Trainers; Wellingtons; Transport; Bostons; Coastal Command and Naval Aircraft; Halifaxes; Lancasters; Mitchells; Liberators; Other Aircraft; Bibliography; Index of Air and Ground Crew. A very minor wrinkle at top edge of spine. Dust jacket has very minor wear and wrinkle at top of spine.
Price: 30.00 USD
