It should have been a simple job. But for Garrett, a human detective in a world of gnomes, tracking down the woman to whom his dead pal Denny left a fortune in silver was no slight task. Denny's family wanted to hang onto the treasure - especially sister Rose, with a body hot enough to stop Garrett in his tracks, but a heart colder than the metal he was packing. And suddenly vampires, centaurs, and other nasty creatures are in the way, and Garrett would much rather be at home with a bottle of beer than in the wilds with fangs in his neck. Even with the aid of Morley, the toughest half-elf around, Garrett isn't sure he'd make it out alive from a land where magic could be murder, the dead still talked, and vampires were always hungry for human blood!" Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book very slightly cocked, light edge wear, tiny corner crease on front cover, small soft corner crease on rear cover, tiny faint number stamp on bottom of text block.

BRITISH REGULAR CAVALRY, 1644-1914., Cooper, Leonard.

London Chapman & Hall 1965 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
216 pp, 8vo (8 3/4"). Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Mr. Cooper takes up his story with the formation of Cromwell's New Model Army, which marked a significant change in cavalry tactics, and closes it with a chapter devoted to the South African War and the years up to the beginning of the 1914 War. In addition, he has written an epilogue to cover the period of cavalry's gradual surrender to mechanisation. Between these points lie nearly three hundred years of history and countless battles which depended for their outcome on the ability and efficiency of the cavalry arm. (He) does not attempt to describe each of these battles in detail; rather, he is concerned, by giving accounts of a series of battles typical of a campaign, or of aspects of the training and tactics of cavalry - Blenheim, Dettingen, Salamanca, Waterloo, Balaclava, etc. - to give a historical impression of the arm's growth and achievements." Short crease at top of pages 73 to 80 - causes some indentation on adjacent pages, minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, soft creasing at top of rear panel, faint foxing and browning .

New York SMITHMARK 1996 0765197332 / 9780765197337 Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine Enrico Arno.
618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

For the c harge of a squadron of the Royal Horse Guards is no light thing: at Dettingen and Warburg, Waterloo and Tel-el-Kebir, many an enemy fell to the heavy cavalry swords. Sir Garnet Wolsely once asked a badly wounded trooper of The Blues what h a d h a p p e n ed to his assailant. 'I cut him in two, Sir,' was the immediate reply. The Blues fought on foot at Abu Klea, where their action in closing the square saved the column but cost them their colonel; used machine guns to deadly effect i n t he G re at W ar ; were the first troops into Brussels in 1944 (something of a race, one leading armoured car was commanded by a steeplechaser, another by a Master of Foxhounds); and even resorted to donkeys in Cyprus.
