1 Bennett, Geoffrey. Preface by Rodney M. Bennett. NAVAL BATTLES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Penguin 2001 0141390875 / 9780141390871 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good -
310 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "With the call to action stations of August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson. Geoffrey Bennett's classic history of the Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements - battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea - with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. He brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies' vital contribution to victory. In his words, 'Though the titantic struggle on the Western Front dominated the strategy of the Allies, it was their Navies, of which the British was immeasurably the strongest, that in the end brought Germany to her knees.' Illustrated with maps, plans and contemporary photographs, this detailed, immaculately researched account is the authoritative history of an often overlooked but hugely important aspect of the First World War." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear, one crease down spine, very tiny crease at top corner of covers, small soft crease and multiple small line indentations at bottom corner of rear cover, minor rubbing/indentation on covers.

NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR., Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair.
3 Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair. NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR.
Brockhampton, London, 1998, reprint.
288 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860198767 B&w and colour illustrations. "During the six years of exile on St Helena, between Waterloo and his death, Napoleon dictated momoirs, notes, letters and battle commentaries to the generals who shared his captivity. He then corrected the material himself. Napoleon used his time in captivity to explain the motives, beliefs and doubts that drove him; to analyse strategies which turned France's Revolution into the French Em pire and examine the tactics that made the Grand Army masters of Europe. He recorded his birth at Ajaccio in 1769, and his genteel but impoverished Corsican childhood. He notes his entry at the age of 10 to the military school in Briennes, a n d h i s own early enthusiasm for the Revolution, which lessened in the face of the Terror...In this book, (the editor) has incorporated much new material from three further volumes of notes and miscellanies dictated by Napoleon at St Helena, i n ad di t io n to the four volumes of Memoirs published in 1823. As before, he has let Napoleon speak in the first person throughout, rather than in the more formal third person of the original text. The result is a fascinating account of Napoleo n' s l ife i n h is ow n words, from his childhood in Corsica to his defeat in Waterloo in 1815. Private concerns, such as feuds with his brothers and divorce from Josephine, are mixed with such matters of state as the rebellion of Toussaint-Louv ert ure and the ret rea t fr om Moscow. Over 90 carefully selected illustrations make this a superbly illustrated, detailed autobiography of one of history's great characters." Fine/Near Fine

"To read the account of Waterloo in the history books of England, France and Germany is to read of three utterly different battl es. Each nation has made its own glowing tapestry of martial glory and national heroes out ot this mighty encounter. Can there be a true story of the day when Napoleon, Wellington and Blucher - three of the masters of combat - met on a comp a c t b a t tlefield to decide the fate on an Empire, and when the course of nineteenth-century history was transformed? In this book, from dawn to nightfall on June 18, 1815, hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute, we follow each twist of the a ct io n i n tu rn from: The English point of view (by William Seymour)...The French point of view (by Jacques Champagne)...The German point of view (by Eberhard Kaulbach)...As the action unfolds, each country's writer gives his own view (plus the won der fu ll y imm edi ate voices of his countrymen who survived to write of their experience) of the day that called forth some of the most brilliant tactical maneuvering - and the bloodiest and fiercest fighting - in the history of warfare." NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS., Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.)
5 Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.) NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS.
Philadelphia Chilton 1966 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
242 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Napoleon, that master strategist, created twenty-six Marshals of France between the years 1804 and 1815. These men, who held the highest positions in the Empire after Napoleon himself, came from diverse, and often humble backgrounds. Among the twenty-six were officers, sergeant majors, rankers, apprentices, a farmer's boy, a brewer, a poet, a smuggler, an actor, a barber, and a prince. The two qualities they all had in common were courage and ambition. During the years when Napoleon was conqueror of most of Europe, the marshals acquired titles and great riches, and in the end there was only one who was not to some extent corrupted by greed or ambition, and who remained loyal to the man who had elevated them all to power. Through their stories, and the eyes of the author, the entire panorama of French history, from the first days of the French Revolution until the restoration of the Bourbons, is seen. The color and excitement of the great battles, the strategy, the roll of history is here in (this book), the first to follow the actual careers of the marshals from July, 1789, until their deaths." Light cigarette odor, a few pages with small a soft wrinkle at top corner, very light browning to top and fore-edge of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light browning at top edge, very light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

6 Hamilton-williams, David. THE FALL OF NAPOLEON: THE FINAL BETRAYAL.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199852 / 9781860199851 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
352 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "This important study of the cause and effects of Napoleon's removal from power tracks the significant events in his illustrious career through to his downfall and, while doing so, charts the clandestine diplomatic intrigues linking Britain, Austria, Russia and Prussia in the quest for the Emperor's demise. Using substantial new research, (the author) questions many of the established views in Napoleonic literature to date. By disclosing hitherto secret terrorist organizations, uncovering the attempts to assassinate Napoleon, highlighting unbridled political duplicity, and demonstrating a host of previously misinterpreted signals and actions, he instigates a fresh assessment of the fall of Napoleon, new reasons to consider how much it was self-inflicted and how much it became inevitable given the combined forces - 'friend' and well as 'foe' - ranged against him. However great his military campaigns, how often he was victorious on the battle-field, Napoleon was destined to be deposed by political connivance and personal betrayal." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE., Higley, Dahn D.
7 Higley, Dahn D. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE.
Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2001 0297646079 / 9780297646075 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
350 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps/battle plans. "At breakfast on the morning of the battle of Waterloo, the Emperor Napoleon declared that the Duke of Wellington was a bad general, the British were bad soldiers and that France could not fail to win an easy victory. Forever afterwards, historians have accused him of gross overconfidence and massively underestimating the calibre of the British commander opposed to him. Andrew Roberts presents an original, highly revisionist view of the relationship between the two greatest captains of their age. The fascinating, constantly changing relationship between these two historical giants forms the basis of (his) compelling study in pride, rivalry, propaganda, nostalgia and posthumous revenge."
