What was the Allied plan when, on 22 January 1944, the invading force waded ashore virtually unopposed by the Germans? In clear and compelling detail, this book gives the answers. 287 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. B&w photos. "At the outset of the 1914-18 War, no recruiting officer would look at any young man who was in less than the prime and peak of physical condition...Any volunteer who was less than the regulation five feet three inches in height got very short shrift...But the war was not very old before the official reaction to undersized volunteers had to change dramatically. Britain's Regular Army, the Expeditionary Force, was virtually wiped out in the first months of fighting...This book relates the history of the Bantam Battalions from beginning to bloody end - one might almost say 'out of nowhere, back into obscurity', for it is suprising how many official histories of the Great War have ignored the very real part these little men played..." WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald.
4 Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald. WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Piatkus, (London, 2001), reprint.
130 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations (contemporary cartoons, drawings, reproductions). "The poignant songs of the First World War still posses a haunting power; and here are the authentic lyrics of the songs - by turns funny, cynical, bawdy, angry, wistful - that the soldiers sang on the march, in the trenches, and in their rare moments of rest. The romantic yearnings of the early stages of the war - epitomised by such songs as 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary', and 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' - later give way to the bitter humour of 'Hanging on the Old Barbed Wire' and 'If the Sergeant Steals Your Rum, Never Mind!'. The soldier who sang these songs with such gusto were asserting ordinary humanity in the face of extraordinary inhumanity. Max Arthur has collected together the lyrics of nearly 100 of the best First World War songs, from Britain and her Australian, Canadian and American allies..." Small slight bump to bottom of spine. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
5 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS IN WORLD WAR I., Barker, Ralph.
6 Barker, Ralph. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS IN WORLD WAR I.
Robinson, London, (2002), reprint.
507 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), soft cover. B&w photos. ISBN 1841194700 "...the compelling story of the vital role played by the pioneer pilots and observers of the Royal Flying Corps who served their apprenticeships in the unforgiving skies of Wor ld War I. The RFC took part in all the major battles from Mons to the Somme, from Bloody April 1917, when the airmen suffered enormous casualties, through Third Ypres and Passchendaele, up to the chaotic retreat from Ludendorff's offensive and o n t o the threshold of victory. Drawing from letters and diaries of the men who took part, Ralph Barker successfully recreates an overview of the battlegrounds from the menacing skies above France and brings fresh off the pages the exhilaration of a e ri al combat in the little open-cockpit biplanes. Risking their lives for their country, suffering the strain of low-level flying, the debility of the 'shakes', and the ever-present fear that they would not return from a mission, these brave y oun g men nevertheless enjoyed comradeship and a true sense of bonding, between pilots and ground mechanics, observers and gunners." BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
7 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915., Baynes, John.
11 Baynes, John. MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915.
Cassell, London, 1967.
286 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Ex-library. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "Morale is as important to a nation in peace as it is in war, on the factory floor and in an office as in a warship or a bomber's crew, in a trade union as in a regiment. In our complex, unstable times, it is vital that we should seek to understand more of morale, what it can attain and how it can be achieved. For this reason alone John Bayne's fascinating sociological study would be an inva luable contribution to the literature of an alarmingly neglected subject. But Major Baynes has a uique and rewarding approach. He has taken a sample community of proven morale and then dissected it tissue by tissue, examining each under t h e m i c r o s cope of his keenly analytical and lively mind. His 'sample' is the 2nd Scottish Rifles, a battalion of that magnificent professional Army with which Britain entered the First World War. At the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March, 19 15 , w he n it w en t 'over the top' it was some 900 strong. Six days later the battalion marched out of the line, still a fighting, disciplined unit. It was 150 strong and was commanded by a second-lieutenant. What enabled those men to keep the ir sp ir it, t hei r t ena ci ty and dash in those awful six days, so graphically recreated here, was their morale. Major Baynes has interviewed the know survivors of the battle and analysed hundreds of books, reports and private papers pertinent to his 's ampl e'. He exa mine s t he social background of the officers and men, their service, their homes, their education, upbringing, beliefs and attitudes. With the advantage of hindsight, he has evaluated their inter-relationships, their loy alti es, and t he r ules and c onven tion s by which they lived. The result is a stimulating book, important in areas far removed from the bloody fields of Flanders." Ex-library copy with some of the usual stamps, old tape and pocket removal m arks , thr ee a reas o f lig ht da mpness marks on f ront board and hinge, free front endpaper missing, a few pages with dog-ear creases, five lines of text on page 92 have green hi-liter. Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1980 0771012357 / 9780771012358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Inscribed By Author
363 pp, 9 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, maps/battle plans. Inscribed on title page: "Pierre Berton / To Leon with my best wishes / Aug '85". "To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Light toning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling; two tiny edge tears archivally taped; light browning on spine, flap-folds, top 1" of panels and top edge of flaps; several tiny dents on front hinge.

Yet despite the huge loss of life and the consequent political distortions and upheavals it has created, remarkably little is known about it. This authoritiative new book, the first full-length study to be undertaken since the Troubles began i n 1 9 6 9 , examines the IRA in depth, analysing its leaders, its objectives and structure. Aided by numerous, unusually frank interviews with the men who run the organisation and key figures in the Security Forces, the authors trace the IRA's pr og r es si on f ro m disarray in the early 1960s to powerful political force in the late 1980s. ISBN 0869781790 "Apart from its importance as an historical narrative the story told in these pages by a 22-year-old soldier has the unique quality of experience freshly ca ptured...the truth of a soldier's life in the critical battles fought in North Africa in 1941-42. It is a personal view of war with its boredom, its moments of terror, of tenderness and humour and its final realisation that war is not a g l o r i o u s g a me. It is written from the limited viewpoint of a young N.C.O. with his self-doubt, his fantasies and his moments of despair. It chronicles the handful of men around him...a section of mortarmen, griping, idle, insubordinate...e xt ra or di na ri ly li gh t-hearted, never failing when courage was demanded - and finally dying together in the great and bloody battle of El Alamein which is the climax of the diary. Told in a day-to-day, sometimes hour-by-hour account, (this) is a b ook th at wil l t o uch a responsive chord in the heart of every man who has borne arms - in any army...The diarist has edited the original here and there and added notes which give a picture of the acutal military situation, often unknown to the writ er a t t he t ime. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier e mbarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the of f i c i al end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. Th e Pr in gle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. Even though many species had sacrificed in battle, some groups of humans thought the 'Golden Rule' translated to 'Humans rule. Now give us your gold'. With the streets descending into bloody race riots, and the organized 'human' brotherhoods flexing both physical and economic muscle, TunFaire was a hairsbreadth from total chaos. Garrett is a wise-guy private investigator who speaks loudly and carries a big stick. He gets pulled into the game when a powerful gang of human rightists starts trying to shake down his employer. 287 pp, 8vo (8" H). "In and around a very English village, murder follows murder, and corpse is piled upon corpse. Fen, whom Crispin fans will remember well, is once again the man who finally sorts out the very intricate puzzle; but for much of the book he is an accessory after the fact, and in a peculiarly gruesome manner. The Rector, the Major, and even old Gobbo, take a hand at playing detective, much to the confusion of Detective-Superintendant Ling. And the lively yarn culminates in a chase to end all chases - involving the local hunt, hunt saboteurs, a herd of rampaging cows, a motor-cycle scramble, a runaway burglar, a team of bloody-minded engineers, the major on horseback, and the police, variously motivated."
