BESIEGED: THE WORLD WAR II ORDEAL OF MALTA, 1940-1942., Jellison, Charles A.
7 Jellison, Charles A. BESIEGED: THE WORLD WAR II ORDEAL OF MALTA, 1940-1942.
University of New Hampshire / University Press of New England, (Hanover, NH), 1984, first edition.
288 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photos, map. ISBN 0874513138 "During the early years of the Second World War, the tiny island of Malta withstood months of incessant heavy bombing and blockade by the Axis powers. Because of its strategic location and excellent harbor facilities, retention of Malta was of utmost importance for the British. Conversely, its surrender or neutralization as an offensive base was given the highest priority by the enemy. For more than two years this lonely outpost (the sole British base between Gibraltar and Alexandria) was subjected to the heaviest sustained bombing ever unleashed upon so small an area, while its people were increasingly deprived of food, medicine, and virtually all other necessities of life by the ever-tightening stranglehold of the Axis blockade. This fine narrative conveys in a lively, moving fashion the effects of that extraordinary period on the populace of Malta. This is not a military history, but rather extremely readable social history set against the backdrop of military events. It deals principally with the effect of the blockade upon island life, and is the first book to present the Maltese war experience from a Maltese point of view. It recounts the story of how a simple, deeply religious people who had never experienced modern warfare reacted to the brutal, grueling ordeal of a war that was none of their making. Growing out of the author's interest in and extended visits to Malta, the book's special features include extensive use of material from diaries and personal recollections extracted from dozens of interviews with actual participants in the drama. " Small faint scuff to fore-edge of textblock, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny soiling marks on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel. VG+/V G

THE WAR ON THE HOSPITAL SHIPS 1914-1918., McGreal, Stephen.
8 McGreal, Stephen. THE WAR ON THE HOSPITAL SHIPS 1914-1918.
Barnsley Pen & Sword 2008 1844158586 / 9781844158584 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
272 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Wounded Allied personnel were invariably repatriated by hospital ships, which ran the gauntlet of mined waters and gambled on the humanity of the U-Boat commanders. For, contrary to the terms of the Geneva Convention, on occasions Germany had sunk the unarmed hospital ships under the pretence they carried reinforcement troops and ammunition. The press seized on these examples of 'Hun Barbarity', especially the drowning on non-combatant female nurses. The crises heighened following the German Government's 1 February 1917 introduction of unrestricted naval warfare. The white-painted Allied hospital ships became, in German eyes, legitimate targets for the U-Boats. As the war on the almost 100 strong fleet of hospital ships intensified the British threatened reprisals against Germany, in particular an Anglo-French bombing raid upon a German town. Undeterred the Germans stepped up their campaign sinking two hospital ships in swift succession. Seven hospital ships struck mines and a further eight were torpedoed. Faced with such a massacre of the innocents Britain decided her hospital ships, painted and brightly lit in accordance with the Geneva Convention, could no longer rely on this immunity. The vessels were repainted in drab colours, defensively armed and sailed as ambulance transports among protected convoys. Germany had successfully banished hospital ships from the high seas." Appendices: Roll of Honour; War Memorials and Cemeteries. Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing.

9 Rabl, S.S. MOBTOWN CLIPPER.
Cornell Maritime Press, Cambridge, Maryland, 1949, Ist edition.
277 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "The year 1809 found shipping in the young American Republic paralyzed by the Embargo Act of Thomas Jefferson, its President. From this beginning, Mr. Rabl has unfolded a thrilling tale of men, ships and privateering in the War of 1812...the story of Eduardo Chavez who dreamed of a ship that would outsail and out-maneuver any ship afloat; of Captain Thomas Boyle, America's greatest daredevil and fun-loving Irishman, who sent his Proclamation to Great Britain's rulers putting the United Kingdom and Ireland under rigorous blockade; of beautiful and vivacious Rose LeCompte who loved a man she could not have. But most of all, it is the story of the clipper ship, Chasseur, the visions and the heartaches that went into her building, the thrills and excitement of her battles as a privateer and her many episodes as a merchantman in the China trade. With Baltimore as the focal point during the War of 1812, this story of Tom Boyle and the Chasseur, offering all the action, color and romance of the period, is made intensely vivid through Mr. Rabl's wide experience with ships and the sea." Light edge wear to boards, light wrinkling a top/bottom of spine, tiny areas of dis-coloration on hinges, shallow depression on bottom of textblock. Dust jacket has small chips and tears, foxing to some edges moderate edge wear, three very small perforations on hinges, light fading and small scuffs on spine, now protected in mylar sleeve. It was also one of the least understoo d and, ultimately, one of the most important issues determining the political stability of the globe at the end of the twentieth century. (The author) explores 'the German Question' and uses it to illustrate the story of how Germany was divid e d a n d then united against a background of global events and a continuing search for stable peace in an area that has not known it since the age of Charlemagne. Focusing on the personalities who controlled Germany's fate - FDR, Churchill, Stal in , D e Ga ul le, Adenauer, Kennedy, Brandt, Reagan, Bush, Gorbachev, Kohl and others - Smyser creates a masterful and engaging portrait of a country that has played a pivotal role in the history of the twentieth century."
