IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC., Dunmore, Spencer.
4 Dunmore, Spencer. IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC.
McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." Vanwell, St. Catharines, Ontario, 2001.
255 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1551250586 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans, colour plates. " 'HMCS Haida's story is an account of sharp-end war; of Canada's naval experience in Murmansk convoys and Briti sh Home Fleet protection; in English Channel operations, when Canadian and British naval units swept the German naval ensign from the seas; in the destruction of a U-boat, and in the liberation of Trondheim, Norway. Haida was always in on t h e a c t i o n. She sank more enemy military tonnage than any other Canadian vessel. Haida's finest days were during the intense naval operations leading up to D-Day, when, with her sisters Huron and Iroquois and the ill-fated Athabaskan, with B ri ti s h an d Po li sh men of war, she engaged German destroyers, torpedo boats, minesweepers and others - and never lost. She vigorously carried the war to the enemy at great risk. Her postwar career including two tours in the Korean theatre dis pla ys th e sam e bra ve purpose in her officers and men, trained professionals and dedicated sailors. Barry Gough has written a new chapter in Canadian naval annals, showing that the best equipment brings forth the best results when good fortu ne a nd s upe rb se aman sh ip a nd weapons handling are matched in equal measure - Haida's illustrious story." 8 Pitchfork, Graham, Air Commodore. Foreword by Flight Lieutenant John Cruickshank VC. SHOT DOWN AND IN THE DRINK: RAF AND COMMONWEALTH AIRCREWS SAVED FROM THE SEA 1939-1945.
National Archives, Kew, 2005, first edition.
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1903365872 B&w photographs, maps, diagrams. "The RAF's Air Sea Rescue Service saved thousands of aircrews during the Second World War, often in the most challenging conditions. This wide-ranging, authoritative account draws on over 40 first-hand testimonies and official reports from the National Archives, as well as dramatic, previously unpublished photographs. It explores Air Sea Rescue action in three operational areas - nor thwest Europe, the Mediterranean and the Far East - and features a wide variety of rescue craft: RAF or Royal Navy launches, airborne lifeboats, aircraft such as the Lysander or specialist amphibians and flying boats. In-depth research into offi c i a l records reveals how the Service was formed and how it evolved in wartime years; it also provides many fascinating details of the training and equipment on which physical survival was to depend. Several of the compelling individual accounts, f ro m new archival research or interviews with surviving members of the Goldfish Club, appear for the first time in print. They vividly evoke the reality of being shot down at sea, sometimes drifting for days awaiting rescue, and the variety of f orm s i n which this eventually came." 9 Ruge, Friedrich. Foreword by Lt. Gen. E.B. Roberts. Translated by Ursula R. Moessner. ROMMEL IN NORMANDY. REMINISCENCES BY FRIEDRICH RUGE.
San Rafael, California Presidio 1979 0891410104 / 9780891410102 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
266 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "As Rommel's naval adviser, Friedrich Ruge is uniquely qualified to bring out the man behind the legend. In the months before the Normandy invasion, Ruge accompanied Rommel on his tours of the French coast. He was a firsthand witness to the frustration and despair that frequently overcame German officers at the impossibility of the task imposed on them by Hitler's irrational optimism. Defeat was certain, yet Rommel did his best to defend the coast against imminent invasion. He encouraged his men and tried to instill some feeling of optimism about the eventual outcome of the war and the reconstruction of Germany. After the Allied landing Rommel fought against the corruption, petty ambitions, and jealousies of the high command. Implicated in the assassination attempt against Hitler, Rommel was secretly murdered, then given the mockery of a state funeral. In their time spent together, Rommel and Ruge became close. Their formal talks concerned problems of coastal defense and reserve forces, but their informal conversation was off the record and confidences were shared. Rommel carried a heavy emotional burden, the author recalls, 'He felt responsible for the fate of the whole nation'. Through Ruge's eyes Rommel emerges as a man to be respected for his personal qualities as well as his military exploits, a man of stature, facing the most difficult time in his life." Small dent in top edge of rear board, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light soiling, a few small blue dye stains on rear flap, a few very small tears archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny chips, minor browning.

London Cassell 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Very Good-
709 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "John Slessor joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 at the age of 18. Thirty-five years later he became Chief of the Air Staff, acknowledged to be one of the world's foremost military strategists. His service life began in an R.F.C. string-and-sealing wax biplane hunting Zeppelins; by 1925 he was in command of No. 4 Squadron at Farnborough; from 1930 to 1934 he was on the Directing Staff of the Army Staff College at Camberley; in 1941 he was in command of No. 5 Bomber Group; two years later, after being ACAS to Portal, he became Commander in Chief Coastal Command at the height of the Battle of the Atlantic. These were only some of the stepping stones in a career which took him to the head of his Service, but they are only a few of the appointments which covered so many branches of the Air Force in peace and war that, in recording his own experience, he tells also the story of the R.A.F."
