Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." It may be anywhere you choose in the English countryside, because ' BB' has drawn a living picture of that sort of delightful old house among fields and woods, the ideal English home which thousands remember from their childhood or hope to have in that future for which they work and plan. The letters are w r i t t e n b y a countryman to a younger friend abroad and they describe the routine of country life throughout the months of the year as it engages an active man with a contemplative mind. They recount the discovery of the small signs of spri ng , th e de li gh t s of summer and long days spent in the open air, and the white beauty of the winter which the townsman hardly knows. Putnam, London, 1946, first British edition.
303 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Pierre Andrezel, whose name appears on this novel, is described as a young Frenchman, born in Rouen 1915, and educated at Oxford where he wrote stories for English magazines. His original publication of 'The Angelic Avengers' in Copenhagen in 1944 may be explained by the state of France at that time, and the less oppressive conditions of the Danes, whom the British Prime Minister dubbed 'the Gangster's Canary Birds'. The use of this phr a s e i n the book can hardly fail to be an allusion, and may have a certain significance, although it would be an error to regard the book as in any serious way allegorical. Pierre Andrezel has not been heard of since the appearance of his novel i n De n ma rk . The setting of (this book) is England and France 1840-41, when a romantic school of fiction still carried on something of the flamboyance and mystery of the Gothic Revival." - from the dust jacket flap. The eleven stories retold in this book by Isabel Barclay are all about birds and animals. One or two come from the Prairies and the Pacific Northwest; the rest belong to the people of the eastern woodlands. The illustrations have been taken from a seventeenth-century manuscript in the Public Archives of Canada know as 'Les raretes des Indes'. 15 Brebeuf, Jean de, Father. THE HURON CAROL.
Toronto Lester & Orpen Dennys 1990 0886192803 / 9780886192808 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine Frances Tyrrell Inscribed by illustrator.
Unpaginated (approx. 32 pp.), 4to (11 1/4" H). INSCRIBED ON HALF-TITLE PAGE BY THE ILLUSTRATOR. Colour illustrations with pictorial border in blue & white. The English translation of a beautiful Christmas carol written by Jesuit missionary, Father Jean de Brebeuf (1593-1649) to help explain the Nativity to the Huron Indians he worked among for twenty-two years. This wonderfully illustrated edition provides the music (including one verse in the old Huron language and two verses in 18th century French) and a background of the carol. I have loved this carol since a child at which time I was fascinated with the concept of mighty Gitchi Manitou (God) sending angel choirs because it was winter and all the birds were gone, and the great chiefs (wise men) bringing 'gifts of fox and beaver pelt'. Tiny scuff on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling along top edge.

19 Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D. ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS.
Portland Timber Press 2005 0881926116 / 9780881926118 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Errol D. Hooper Jr.
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Colour photographs, b&w drawings. "(T)he authors look at the structure, development, genetics, and reproduction of plants, the most prominent actors in garden ecosystems. They describe other garden organisms, focusing on those with the most influential roles - insects, nematodes, and microorganisms - as well as garden denizens ranging from microscopic prions to elephants. (They) explore nutrient cycles, sunlight, air, water, and the soil - the physical environment within which garden organisms live and function - and they consider the ways plants function in their environment and form communities. They then examine the intricate interactions among garden-dwelling organisms, ranging from the harmful to the beneficial. Once this groundwork is laid, they introduce humans into the garden ecosystem and consider how gardeners can use ecological principles to wisely manage their garden ecosystems. Throughout the book, the authors cite hundreds of examples drawn from personal experience and from the gardening and ecological literature. It becomes clear that gardens - whether a group of potted plants on a patio, a few beds carved out of a lawn, or extensive plantings over several acres - are indeed connected to the natural world in endless and important ways." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny dents on spine and hinges.

This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks.
