PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948., Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward.
3 Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward. PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948.
New York Harper 2012 0062030310 / 9780062030313 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

Each found a way through the maze of courses, cases, debates and exams. Then they fanned out across the country to careers as diverse as their beginnings. 1991. 160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1986 0771013396 / 9780771013393 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edgewear/wrinkling.

436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(This) portrait of James Chalmers McRuer (1890-1985), one of Canada's most outstanding jurists, sets out to discover the character of the man who played a key role in the evolution of Canadian law. His career of more than fifty years included service on the Archambault Royal Commission on Penal Reform from 1936 to 1938. He was appointed judge on the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1944, chief justice of the Ontario High Court in 1945, and from 1964 to 1971 he was head of the Royal Commission Inquiry into Civil Rights. From 1964 to 1977 he was chairman and later vice-chairman of the Ontario Law Reform Commission. The driving spirit behind McRuer was his passion for justice, rising from his conviction that the justice system should serve the oppressed, regardless of their ability to pay. As a law reformer, McRuer saw a pressing need to adapt the law so that it could better serve all people in the changed conditions of the twentieth century. He possessed a sharp sensitivity to the often hidden injustices existing in an advanced industrial society and a bureaucratic state." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

But as America's foremost experimental test pilot, he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical information which he is called upon to use at any given moment. After the war, Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action, he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot.
