1968 COOKING CLUB CALENDAR - ADVERTISING PIECE FOR MOOTE & HODGSON LIMITED, ORANGEVILLE, ONTARIO., Baker, Betty / Moote & Hodgson, Orangeville, Ontario.
3 Baker, Betty / Moote & Hodgson, Orangeville, Ontario. 1968 COOKING CLUB CALENDAR - ADVERTISING PIECE FOR MOOTE & HODGSON LIMITED, ORANGEVILLE, ONTARIO.
1967 Soft Cover Very Good+
Approx. 11 3/8" H x 8" W. This calendar was an advertising piece for Moote & Hodgson Limited of Orangeville, Ontario. The binding quite cleverly consists of a piece of flexible 'gold' coloured metal, with a hole for hanging at top, which loops through all the pages of the calendar. When the 'gold' pencil that slots into the loop is removed, the pages can be taken out and re-ordered (the instructions suggest that each finished month be placed at the back of the calendar in sequence). The twelve sheets for the months each form a pocket at the bottom (for storing receipts, recipes, notes, etc.) and have a recipe illustrated with a sepiatone photograph and a menu on the front. On the reverse are additional recipes following that month's theme and a tip from Betty Baker. The calendar cover consists of a folded sheet (just over 6 1/2" H at the front) with a pasted on colour picture of a fisherman and the company details on the front. The full-sized rear section has a form for filling in the "Household Budget" on the inside (unused) and information on "Home Freezing - Fruits and Vegetables" on the reverse. The monthly recipe themes are: January - Sandwiches Supreme; February - Soup So Warm; March - Fish 'n' Things; April - Meat Miracles; May - Good ol' Cookie; June - Delectable Vegetables; July - Dessert Magic; August - Beverage Coolers; September - Countdown on Coffee Cakes; October - Thanksgiving Delights; November - Fashionable Meat Dishes; December - Salads Superb. The rear section has small creases at bottom corners, light browning at bottom rear edge, and very tiny crease at top corners.

6 Burton, G. Allan. A STORE OF MEMORIES.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771017928 / 9780771017926 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has one tiny tear with crease - archivally taped, a few areas of light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, very light rubbing.

11 Hatsuho Naito. Foreword by James Michener. Preface by Hachiro Hosokawa. Introduction by Boye De Mente. THUNDER GODS: THE KAMIKAZE PILOTS TELL THEIR STORY.
New York Kodansha 1989 0870119095 / 9780870119095 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
215 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, map. "(T)he compelling first-hand account of the pilots who pledged themselves to die for their emperor in the closing days of the Pacific War. Known to the world as kamikaze - divine wind - their suicide attacks on American naval forces caused panic and disruption, but they were born out of the desperation of the Imperial Command, determined to avoid the shame of surrender at any cost. Using as a rationale the loudly proclaimed belief that suicide attacks by Japanese pilots attested to the spiritual righteousness of Japan's struggle, the Command's exhortations convinced legions of young men of the virtue of volunteering for the Ohka program, in which flying bombs were constructed whose only guiding mechanism was their human cargo. The pilots are the thunder gods of the title, and this is the first time they have told their own story. (C)ombines military history, technical innovation, and the personal stories of men of whom something extraordinary was asked, men who died in futility or survived to reflect on their experiences with mixed feelings of pride, poignance and cynicism. These pilots were not fanatics or automatons, but sacrificial victims to the excesses of war. 'Thunder Gods' tells their story, and returns to them their humanity." Minor soiling on fore edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling .

WILD MARY: THE LIFE OF MARY WESLEY., Marnham, Patrick. (Mary Wesley).
16 Marnham, Patrick. (Mary Wesley). WILD MARY: THE LIFE OF MARY WESLEY.
Chatto & Windus, London, 2006, first edition.
289 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0701179910 B&w plates. "She was born Mary Farmar, related to the Duke of Wellington, and grew up a rebel who believed that she was her mother's least favourite child. Like many girls of her background, she married for escape. - In the late 1930s, she began a fascination with Heinz Ziegler, a Czech university professor and wartime air gunner; his brother, Paul, later a Benedictine monk, also fell under her spell. - At the outb r e ak of the Second World War she was, as she put it, 'roped into Intelligence', where she worked on breaking codes. MI5 and her rackety life during the Blitz eventually inspired her novels ('Jumping the Queue', 'The Camomile Lawn', 'Not That Sort o f Girl', 'A Sensible Life', etc.), many of which were concerned with multiple wartime love affairs. She wrote about the atmosphere of the home front and how the imminence of death loosened inhibitions - her fiction was as sexy and as candid as s he wa s herself. She drew on her eccentric friends and her love of Cornwall and the West Country, while the darkness of her novels was illuminated by a caustic sense of the ridiculous. Her style has been described as arsenic without the old lace. (T his ) is a remarkable book about a woman who was courageous, sensual, talented and ruthless. Readers will enjoy her story not only for its witty anecdotes and devastating one-liners, but also for the intimate portrait it builds of a multi-layer ed p erso nality in which much was hidden." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's place, date and signature on half-title page; light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling and wear at top.bottom of spi ne an d fla p-folds, some edge wrinkling - mainly along top edge. Very Good/Very Good

344 pp, square (8 7/8" H x 8 7/8" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "The nineteenth century opened in the flicker of tallow candles. It closed in the glare of Edison's electric lamp. Between those two events inventors and manufacturers developed a wonderful assortment of progressively more efficient lighting devices, burning a variety of fuels. Dr. Russell records with scientific attention to detail - backed up with more than 200 illustrations - how these lamps were made and used. His text is interspersed with accounts of his own experiments with the fuels and mechanisms of earlier generations. The discovery of kerosene is related in full, as is the invention of successively improved kerosene burners, lamps, and chimneys - a field up to now neglected by technological historians. Separate chapters deal with rushlights and candles; firelighting tools; pan lamps; and lamps fuelled with whale oil, lard, burning fluid, gas, and electricity. There is an extensive glossary."
