Fawcett, Greenwich, Conn., c1954.
206 pp, mass market paperback. "....a novel of New York crammed with the sights and sounds and colors of the main stem, a lyric tribute to garish Manhattan. Now, on her return by popular demand, meet Hortense, the kind of girl who came alive only in the night, when all the neons were shining and all the pretty moths were fluttering. Meet Hortense, the miner's daughter, the Cinderella in a lonely bedroom, who searched for the city of enchantment - and found only a wilderness of con c r e t e . 69 pp, + large b&w plate section (photographs, reproductions), 11 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth with gold lettering on spine, gold crest on front board. "(C)elebrates the quincentenary of the introduction of printing at Oxford with a pictorial history of its subsequent progress, illustrated by the books, documents, and pictures which are its tangible record. The story, although it properly begins with the arrival of Theodoric Rood and the first learned and educational books that he printed, stretches back to the early thirteenth century when scribes, illuminators, and binders of books were already found in Oxford; but it was not until the seventeenth century that, at the initiative of two great men, Archbishop Laud and Bishop Fell, the University Press in its present form was established. It is the dark, dominant figure of John Fell, Dean of Christ Church, and then Bishop of Oxford, who emerges as the real founder of the University Press, and the man who determined the type of books which still preoccupy the Press: learned and educational books, and the Bible." Tiny soiling mark on top of text block, small shallow bump to top of both boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has old tape repairs at top/bottom inside of spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small surface paper loss on front panel, minor soiling.

"(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light wrinkle at bottom of spine and tiny tear at nottom of rear hinge.

BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY., Boyce, Gerry.
6 Boyce, Gerry. BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY.
Toronto Natural Heritage / Dundurn 2008 1550028634 / 9781550028638 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
310 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) treasure trove of stories - 'glorious and not-so-glorious' - embodying the history of the city of Belleville (Ontario) and its beautiful surroundings. Gerry Boyce, the dean of the area's historians, has done a masterful job of pulling together the best of Belleville's storied past, episode by episode, decade by decade: here one learns about the Native roots of the place, its debatable 'discovery' by Champlain, its hot-headed pre-Confederation politics, its involvement in Spiritualism in the 1850s and the spread of prostitution in the Victorian 1870s. Moving forward from the days of Susanna Moodie and Mackenzie Bowell, it provides an entertaining and probing stroll through the past 110 years, reminding readers of such national events as the sensational 1959 victory by the Belleville MacFarlands over the Russians at the World Amateur Hockey Championship in Prague; and then, less well known, the financially crippling news of secret payments made to the players. Gerry Boyce (reminds) us that our history, be it local or national, is much more lively and intriguing than we often realize." Michael Peterman . Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

Unpaginated, 11 1/8" H. "Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, retells the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a takeoff of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated with the Bible's language, 'a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions', that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation assembled primarily from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Version. Now readers of every persuasion - Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers - can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic and even juicy stories." Profusely illustrated in b&w comic strip fashion at an "adult" level, with an Introduction and Commentary by Crumb. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

Greenhill, London, 1988, reprint.
355 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0947898875 Maps. "Whether among the first three to charge the French guns at Medellin, leading his troopers into the enemy ranks at Salamanca, or evolving order out of the chaos that bedevill ed the Portuguese Army in 1809, Sir Benjamin D'Urban was not only a brave and resolute soldier but also a painstaking and highly efficient Chief of Staff to Marshal Beresford. Finding, on arrival at Corunna in October 1808, that he had been a p p o i n t ed to that part of the Army left behind in Portugal, D'Urban set out to meet Sir John Moore in the hope of receiving fresh orders. This was the beginning of six years of unbroken service which included taking part in ten battles and s ie ge s. Af te r a short period as Staff Officer to Sir Robert Wilson, he was appointed Colonel and QMG to the Portuguese Army by Marshal Beresford in April 1809. The 'Journals' give a day to day summary of the Peninsular Campaign, which was found in val uab l e b y S ir Charles Oman, and provides a counter to what D'Urban considered unfair criticism of Beresford by Sir Charles Napier. Long out of print, this unique record of events fills a need for everyone interested in the campaigns of 1809 -181 5, p ar ticu larl y i n regard to the operations of the Right Wing of the Allied Army and of the part played by the Portuguese Army, which has not always received the credit due for some of its major exploits." 17 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." "(The author provides atmosphere and reality to this history) by focusing attention upon the people and the everyday happenings at the Fortress of Louisbourg and gives a colorful re-creation of land and sea battles. Downey describes this vital bastion as 'The strongest fortress in America, a walled city without a peer in the New World'. Louisbourg was guardian of the approaches to the S t . L awrence River, gateway to the heart of French Canada, and the key to a continent. In North America, the grasp of France was beginning to loosen. Its territories were shrinking, due to England's relentless drive. But total possession was im po ss i bl e so long as the great fortress Louisbourg stood fast. Then in 1744, war was declared between France and England and General William Pepperrell and American Colonial troops with the English navy laid siege to Louisbourg which fell in 174 5. En gl and 's possession lasted only three years, as Louisbourg was restored to the French by the Treaty of Aix la-Chapelle. The Seven Years War brough still another siege (1758) by the British who defeated the French. 144 pp, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1903040027 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, uniform studies, maps/battle plans. "(T)ells the story of one of the great military elites of the past - the Rifleman. It shows him at his finest moment in the green jacket of the 95th Rifles in the wars against Napoleon. It reveals the way he fought, the weapons and equipment he used, and the tactics he perfected. First-hand accounts are matched by bri lliant colour reconstructions of the Rifleman, bringing the reality of the battle to the reader. The invention of the rifle gave a new twist to warfare. Hunters became soldiers who fought in green and hid behind cover - the days of brightly - u n i f o r med ranks of men exchanging volleys of fire was over. Developed in the forests of North America, the Rifleman revolutionised the art of war. In the campaigns against Napoleon, units of British Riflemen took on French light infantry a rm ed w it h mu sk ets. Trained to act independently and with a respect for his own skills, the Rifleman was an exceptionally intelligent warrior, the forefather of today's combat soldier. His greatest moments in the Peninsular War and at the bat tle of Wa ter lo o a re vividly described in first-hand accounts, but some of the myths of the Rifleman are also punctured."
