THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE., Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier.
2 Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier. THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE.
Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

3 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

Gangrel - 271 pp + excerpts, 1999 second printing, ISBN 1565048032 - "Ramona and her friends have learned this much: What they don't know can kill them - and will, if given a chance. Their watchword: beware! Beware of other vampires - the Sabbat's conscienceless killers. Beware the unknown - a monstrous creature with the oozing, pulsating Eye. Beware supernatural terrors that stalk the wild places. Beware even themselves, for in the blink of an eye their own bloodlust can take control." 3. Setite - 278 pp + excerpts, 1999 first printing, ISBN 1565048040 - "In an antique shop in Manhattan Hesha finds a clue to a prize that has eluded him for lifetimes - the Eye of Hazimel. But is anything truly chance in the shadowy world of the Kindred?" 4. Ravnos - 265 pp + excerpts, 2000 first printing, ISBN 1565048083 - "Khalil Ravana has always been a lightweight, a drifter, a thief with not status and no power - until now. For once, Khalil's sticky fingers give him the upper hand. Armed with secrets, a hidden ally, a burning thirst for revenge, and a hostage he saves from death, this Rom is going to take everyone else in New York City - Camarilla and Sabbat alike - for all he can get, including the blood of his elders." 5. Giovanni - 287 pp, 2000 first printing, ISBN 1565048261 - "Benito Giovanni has disappeared. Enter Chas Giovanni Tello, Mob strong-arm and part of the New World Giovanni. Anthology - 288 pp, 2000 first printing, ISBN 1565048768 - "More fascinating than the events of the Clan Novel series are the characters. The wily Victoria; the cool and calculating Hesha; the new Prince of New York, Calebros; the mad prophet Anatole; the brooding and dedicated Theo; and all the other characters featured in the original series. These thirteen characters form the basis of the all-new stories of this anthology. And who better to tell their stories than the authors of the Clan Novels? All of the authors of the original series have contributed to this anthology. With the addition of fine stories by two other authors as well, readers may peer even deeper into the shadows of the World of Darkness and find answers to some of the mysteries not resolved in the series itself." Interiors - "Gangrel" has approx. 1" piece missing from bottom of last page, "Setite" has corner crease on pages 39 to 42, otherwise all books are clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exteriors - very minor edge wear, a few tiny light corner creases on some books - "Anthology" has crease at top corner of rear cover that migrates into the last few pages.

A CRIMINAL HISTORY OF MANKIND., Wilson, Colin.
5 Wilson, Colin. A CRIMINAL HISTORY OF MANKIND.
London Granada 1984 0246116366 / 9780246116369 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
702 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(T)ells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia, taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler - - . Each age has its own characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study of human depravity: it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence." Dust jacket minor edge wear, very light edge wrinkling, light browning at top edge of flaps and top inside edge of jacket, light rubbing.
