3 Birrell, Andrew. BENJAMIN BALTZLY. PHOTOGRAPHS & JOURNALS OF AN EXPEDITION THROUGH BRITISH COLUMBIA: 1871.
Toronto Coach House Press 1978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Benjamin Baltzly, photographer.
159 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 3/4" D). Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light wrinkle at bottom of spine and tiny tear at nottom of rear hinge.

Macmillan Company of Canada, Toronto, 1944, reprint.

"....an exciting action story of that dramatic period in North American history when the British and French vied with each other and with the native Indians for control of this rich land; a struggle that culminated in the American Revolutionary War which raged up and down the beautiful Mohawk valley for several years and culminated in the defeat of the British by the re bels and the departure of the decimated Indians westward. It is the story of Joseph Brant, Mohawk chief, who led the People of the Longhouse, the Six Nations' Indians, through fateful years of triumph and disaster, when excitement ran high a n d d a n g er lurked round every bend of trail or river. Realizing that to survive, the Indians must have gunpowder, Joseph bargained with the white men, and when the Indians decided to fight with the British, gunpowder was the deciding factor . Ho w b ri ll ia nt was Joseph's leadership, and how nearly the Indians came to winning the war for the British, is now told for the first time in this dramatic and colourful novel. The battle strategy which Brant devised would, if followed by t he Bri ti sh , h ave wo n t he war for them. 170 years later it has formed the basis of British commando tactics. It is also the story of Joseph's love for Catherine Crogan, the beautiful half-breed Indian whose brilliant spying for the British won this tr ibu te f rom Colo nel Butler: 'How else could two hundred Rangers and a handful of Indians have lived off the enemy and kept a frontier in flames for four years?'." 5 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

PARK PRISONERS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WESTERN CANADA'S NATIONAL PARKS, 1915-1946., Waiser, Bill.
9 Waiser, Bill. PARK PRISONERS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WESTERN CANADA'S NATIONAL PARKS, 1915-1946.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Fifth House 1995 1895618657 / 9781895618655 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
294 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, maps. "Between 1915 and 1946, some ten thousand men were put to work in western Canada's national parks. They were the country's unwanted - unskilled foreign workers, the jobless and the homeless, conscientious objectors, perceived enemies of the state, and prisoners of war. These men had committed no crimes, but because of war or depression, they were seen as a possible threat to public order and a potential source of civil unrest. The Canadian government consequently sent them to the parks - world-renowned places such as Banff, Jasper, and Yoho - where they were held under duress in isolated work camps for months, sometimes years. (This) is the first comprehensive, illustrated history of the national park labour camp story, examining where and when the various groups were interned and how they were treated and employed. It also describes their significant contributions to the built environment of the parks - including many of the heritage buildings - at a time when such development would not normally have been undertaken." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket gas a tiny scuff/dent on rear panel, tiny light scuff at top of rear flap-fold.
