Bowman was fighting in a war, but then on Ap ril 23, 1945, David encountered an unexpected and terrible twist of events that changed his life forever. After a fairly routine enemy target attack on a munitions dump near Rangoon, Burma, his Liberator aircraft was making its way back across t h e Bay of Bengal, bringing David and his comrades back to home base for a debriefing and a beer. Ten miles from the shores of Burma, David suddenly heard his skipper say these chilling words: 'Dinghy! Dinghy! Prepare for ditching.' David Bow ma n, i n his easy, humourous style, shares his true life story experiences of that fateful day in 1945 and the days following. He invites his readers to join him in reliving the ups and downs of the experience in the Bay, 'welcoming you all to th e B ay o f Bengal'." BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY., Boyce, Gerry.
4 Boyce, Gerry. BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY.
Toronto Natural Heritage / Dundurn 2008 1550028634 / 9781550028638 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
310 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) treasure trove of stories - 'glorious and not-so-glorious' - embodying the history of the city of Belleville (Ontario) and its beautiful surroundings. Gerry Boyce, the dean of the area's historians, has done a masterful job of pulling together the best of Belleville's storied past, episode by episode, decade by decade: here one learns about the Native roots of the place, its debatable 'discovery' by Champlain, its hot-headed pre-Confederation politics, its involvement in Spiritualism in the 1850s and the spread of prostitution in the Victorian 1870s. Moving forward from the days of Susanna Moodie and Mackenzie Bowell, it provides an entertaining and probing stroll through the past 110 years, reminding readers of such national events as the sensational 1959 victory by the Belleville MacFarlands over the Russians at the World Amateur Hockey Championship in Prague; and then, less well known, the financially crippling news of secret payments made to the players. Gerry Boyce (reminds) us that our history, be it local or national, is much more lively and intriguing than we often realize." Michael Peterman . O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE., Higley, Dahn D.
8 Higley, Dahn D. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE.
Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1959 Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
298 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Eight b&w plates plus fold-out map - collated. Includes the author's introduction to her novel, "Mark Hurdlestone". "Mrs. Moodie, a refined and sophisticated person by upbringing and inclination, looks, not back, but about her at the relatively advanced society which had grown up in the clearings along the 'front' of the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. Here we are concerned, not with the woodsman's axe and the primitive struggle against nature, not with the solitary but with social man. Mrs. Moodie is quite sure that this society is in a much healthier condition than the one she had known in England: She associates the improvement with the mixing of the classes in the new society and thinks that the absence of convention and prejudice in the relations between various occupational groups is partly due to a 'friendly' American influence. She likes the greater liveliness in social intercourse, and better still she likes the way in which the stripping away of the old preconceptions makes possible a true estimate of a man's worth which she sees simply as the sum of his native ability, his industry, his moral training and his education." First published in 1853 . Minor browning to pages, light cigarette odor, a few tiny light stains in top margin of pages 264 & 265, light browning to edges of textblock, minor wrinking at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock.
