Squadrons often used a special crest or colour scheme to identify aircraft in the squadron. This was an aid to groundcrews as well and helped them prepare to service their incoming aircraft during battle." His readable and entertaining narrative describes a rapid and eventful progression from cadet to Flight Commander of a Beaufort squadron, whilst also giving a clear impression of the society he lived in and the RAF itself, struggling to come to terms with the dramatic changes war wrought upon a once peaceful country. "Formed on 14 October, 1925, (this Squadron) was made up of men who worked in the City, who had an interest in aviation and who were f urther moved by a drive to serve their country. Under their first and probably best known commanding officer, the Rt Hon. Freddie Guest, MP, these Auxiliaries, who trained only at weekends, achieved a standard of efficiency which was the e n v y o f o t her 'regular' RAF Squdrons. Formed as a bomber squadron, No.600 became a night-fighter squadron in 1940, equipped with obsolete Blenheims, of which an entire flight was lost over Holland on the night of 10 May, 1940. Later in the S ec on d W or ld Wa r the Squadron served in North Africa, Malta and Italy, becoming the highest-scoring Allied night-fighter squadron of the war, by then flying in Beaufighters and Mosquitos and referred to by the enemy as 'The Fright of the Nig ht' . Dis ba nd ed in 1 945 , it was reformed a year later under Squadron Leader Hayes to become a day-fighter Squadron once again, flying in Spitfires and Gloster Meteors until it was finally disbanded in 1957...."
