London Victor Gollancz 1976 0575020482 / 9780575020481 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
191 pp, 8" H. Red boards with gilt lettering on spine. "Debbie Joyce, a young cabaret singer, is found strangled. A week later, in the same city, Elaine Bennett, a nurse, is similarly murdered. Immediately the press raise the alarm that a psychopathic killer is on the loose. But Chief Superintendent Wycliffe is not convinced that this is the answer. While police precautions are greatly increased, he quietly goes his own way, probing into the possibility, however remote, that there is some logical connection - logical at least to the murderer - between the two deaths. His absorbing investigation takes him into the past of the dead women, and finally to a 'community holiday' which a group of schoolgirls spent together. And nasty little beasts some of them were, playing a cruel trick on the teacher in charge and on one of the other girls. Can this remote escapade have triggered murder in the present? And if so, why and how? And are there other murders to come? Wycliffe learns a lot about the strangeness of human nature during his exploration of the world of the schoolgirls, and the narrative builds up to a tense climax." Faint tanning to pastedowns and half of each free endpaper, two very tiny edge tears at top corner of page leaf 37/38. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has some minor edge wrinkling, minor tanning on inside of flaps and at top inside edge.

467 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "A legendary work of religious scholarship and art history, available in English for the first time. This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. (It) was the life's work of the French Catholic scholar Louis Charbonneau-Lessay, who combed the religious traditions of ancient Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, early and medieval Christianity, Gnosticism, Kabbalah, and alchemy to research it. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. COMPANION TO NARNIA., Ford, Paul F. Foreword by Madeleine L'Engle.
9 Ford, Paul F. Foreword by Madeleine L'Engle. COMPANION TO NARNIA.
San Francisco Harper & Row 1980 0062503405 / 9780062503404 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good - Lorinda Bryan Cauley.
315 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w drawings, maps. "A complete, illustrated guide to the themes, characters, and events of C.S. Lewis's imaginary world." "Beginning anywhere - with a character, an object, an overview, a theme - readers can pursue a thread of inquiry as far as they wish with this simple-to-use, comprehensive system of cross-references. No matter how familiar you may be with the saga of Narnia, this magical 'Companion' will lead you to a fuller understanding and appreciation of the treasures - hidden as well as overt - enriching these now-classic tales. Paul Ford brings careful scholarship and contagious enthusiasm to his research. He examines classical, scriptural, and literary references; unearths the origins of crucial terms and concepts; and provides insight into the symbolic and thematic threads that amplify and unify the series. Ford is also able to shed light on the influence of events in C.S. Lewis's life upon the composition of the 'Chronicles' - for example, the curious matter of the 'disappearance' of the Dark Island in the differing British and American editions of 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader'. The thoughtful, informative, lively entries invite casual perusal while affording the serious student a refreshing and satisfying key to what has been termed 'the allusive subtext' of the seven books - that valuable substrata of psychological, philosophical, and spiritual ideas that inform and enhance these stories." Very small stain on fore-edge of text block, small bump at top edge of spine, very small remainder mark (red star) and very tiny dent on bottom of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - very light edge wear elsewhere, one very small edge tear with crease, protected in a paper-backed mylar sleeve.

205 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "On one level (this) is a literary guide and deals with the mythological patterns which underlie the Mabinogion. On another, it is a deep exploration of the Western Mysteries as they emerge from the tales of the Four Branches, of Colhwch and Olwen and Taliesin. Within these stories lie the identities of two major figures of the native tradition: Mabon, the Wondrous Youth who is lost and found, and Modron, his mother, the Great Goddess herself. Here the initiatory pattern of Britain's inner guardians is revealed in the Succession of the Pendragons; the release of Mabon is affected with the help of the Totem Beasts, before the birth of time; while the cosmic harp of the Wondrous Youth ushers in the Aquarian Age. Drawing on this first exploration of the Mabinogion, the reader can trace for himself the archetypes and mythological themes from which these medieval stories, themselves descendants of proto-Celtic oral tradition, are derived."
