London Viking 2012 0670917559 / 9780670917556 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing on rear panel.

367 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). "(A) story of five months of hair-raising adventure on the Italian front in which young Otto Prohaska, the hero of 'A Sailor of Austria' and 'The Emperor's Coloured Coat', entrusts his life to the nascent, unreliable, and terrifying Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Flying Service. It is the summer of 1916, and Otto, joined by his self-willed aerial chauffeur Sergeant-Pilot Toth, entrusts his life to a succession of flimsy biplanes in the sky above war-torn Alpine battlefields. On the ground, the rickety Habsburg empire has begun its final slide to disaster. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
10 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

Each ballad is introduced by an account of the events which led to its composition and accompanied by a map of the battle where appropriate. In this book, from dawn to nightfall on June 18, 1815, hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute, we follow each twist of the a ct io n i n tu rn from: The English point of view (by William Seymour)...The French point of view (by Jacques Champagne)...The German point of view (by Eberhard Kaulbach)...As the action unfolds, each country's writer gives his own view (plus the won der fu ll y imm edi ate voices of his countrymen who survived to write of their experience) of the day that called forth some of the most brilliant tactical maneuvering - and the bloodiest and fiercest fighting - in the history of warfare." Robson, London, 1992.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0860517969 B&w illustrations. "When Isaac Rosenberg was killed in action on the Western Front in April 1918, the world lost one of the most striking talents of that ill-fated generation. He differe d from Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon - the two poets with whom he is most often compared - in that his was a double-faceted gift: he was both poet and painter. Also, unlike the other celebrated war poets, he was a private in the ranks, g i v i n g his poetry its particular, harrowing perspective. This moving and definitive biography is a fitting tribute to Rosenberg's tragically short life. Born to impoverished Russian Jewish immigrants, he grew up in London's East End, and onl y en li st ed t o escape the grinding poverty of home. After a short period in camp, he was sent straight to the Somme battlefields. Dr Cohen's study is based on an exhaustive examination of Rosenberg's drawings, paintings, prose pieces, poetry, l ett ers an d p riv at e family papers, and a close collaboration with the poet's late sister who was for many years his literary executrix. It is a story fraught with anxious striving, unremitting deprivation and unmerited neglect - neglect whi ch unti l re cent ly d ogge d h is reputation despite acclaim from a number of eminent critics, among them F R Leavis, who wrote 'genius is the word for Rosenberg'."
