4 Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918.
Leo Cooper, London, 1994, revised edition.
159 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523184 B&w photographs, diagram, map. "Philip Bartlett's account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as a history, of the first use of the bomber in war, strangely, by the Navy's aircraft. Flying by day and night alone, without navigational aids, the author moves from attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the s upport of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud of Passchendaele. The climax in March, 1918, is reached when the author's squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British Vth Ar m y a n d n e a rly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous desperate missions against the advancing troops from aerodromes which were over-run time after time. At a time when the life of a pilot was re ck on e d in w e ek s, t he author flew 101 missions, enduring the rigours of flying without heat or oxygen, with hesitant engines, no parachutes and the attention of German fighters. Yet there is continual evidence of the pure joy of flying and won der a t the sh ee r b eau ty of the sky." Light browning to top edge of textblock, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good

HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION., Coad, J.G. (Jonathan)
5 Coad, J.G. (Jonathan) HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION.
London Victor Gollancz, London, 1983. 1983 0575032774 / 9780575032774 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
160 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, plans, elevations, maps. "From the 1690s to the First World War, British maritime power, though often challenged, ruled supreme. It was a key factor in the nation's commercial growth which fuelled and underpinned industrial and imperial expansion. Central to the creation and maintenance of that supremacy were the royal dockyards, and the naval hospitals. Without these there could have been no Royal Navy, and Britain's modern history would have been very different. (This book) concentrates on the period from 1700 to 1900, with particular emphasis on the dockyards built to service the sailing navy. They are rich in naval and architectural history and were industrial centres in England well before the Industrial Revolution. They go far towards explaining how it was that Britain was able to maintain and sustain one of the greatest navies the world has seen. With numerous illustrations featuring surviving buildings in Chatham, Sheerness, Portsmouth, Devonport, Harwich, Gibraltar, Minorca, Malta, Bermuda and Antigua, (it) is a fascinating and important book." Tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

7 Cynk, Jerzy B. HISTORY OF THE POLISH AIR FORCE, 1918-1968.
Osprey, (Reading, Berkshire, 1972).
207 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 250 b&w photographs. "This detailed account of the Polish Air Force - its birth in revolution, its brief but heroic period as the air arm of an independent nation, and its present status as one of the principal weapons in the armoury of the Soviet bloc - fills a serious gap in published aviation history. It is the first complete coverage of the subject to appear anywhere in the world...extensive appendices list data on aircraft supplies and equipment strength, operational records, commanders, bases, and losses and air victories in the two world wars...Based on much information new to the West, exhaustively documented, and written with admirable objectivity, it amounts to more than a history of an air force. The author has taken such trouble to explain the historical, social and economic background that it becomes an important contribution to the history of Poland itself, and a commentary on the socio-political problems of air technology which are just as applicable today." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing. VG/VG

Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1979, first edition.
255 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340234334 " 'Schwerttrager!' It is the summer of 1917, Britain is losing the war against the U-boats and Commander David Cochrane Smith listens to the delirious mumbling of a dying U-baot c ommander: 'Swordbearer'. Smith believes it is the code name for an operation, a threat to Britain, but nobody will listen to him. The threat haunts him. He meets a wild, beautiful, tragic girl and she solves a tiny part of the mystery, en o u g h t o set a clock ticking, counting down. Smith has come home with a bloody victory to his credit but he is still under suspicion of being reckless, a wild man, at best just lucky. He believes the answer to the U-boat lies in convoys but h e is g iv e n a f lotilla 'to take offensive action against U-boats and bases'. The flotilla turns out to be one ancient destroyer, a turtle-back 'thirty-knotter' known as 'Bloody Mary'. It is backed up by a 'ship of force', but that is no more t ha n a mo nit or , ne ar -new and with fifteen-inch guns. Her engines are defective, she is slow and spends more time in the dockyard than at sea. The flotilla is a sick joke; the two ships are the lepers of the Dover Patrol. With them Smith has to take on shor e b at ter ies and bigger, faster enemy destroyers. He has to fight the hostility of his commanding officer and is plunged into the world of espionage behind the enemy lines. Through it all the mystery behind 'Schwerttrager' lure s h im on unt il he sta kes his car eer and his life in a desperate attempt to solve it." Faint cigarette odor. THE BATTLE OF THE AIRFIELDS, 1ST JANUARY 1945., Franks, Norman. Signed.
10 Franks, Norman. Signed. THE BATTLE OF THE AIRFIELDS, 1ST JANUARY 1945.
Grub Street, London, (1994), revised, updated Anniversary edition including new German material.
224 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED ON TITLE PAGE BY AUTHOR. B&w photos. "At first light on the morning of Ist January 1945, over 800 Luftwaffe fighters took off from their bases in Germany to attack Allied airfields in Holland, Belgium and France. Some of these surprise attacks proved successful, some were hardly noticed, while others were disastrous for the attackers. Basing his account on information from both Wing and Squadron diaries, and with many first-hand account s from the men who were there, Norman Franks paints a definitive picture of that winter morning and the rest of the day. In these attacks, and in the air battles which were fought at low level across the open countrysides and over towns in t h e L o w Countries, the Luftwaffe lost up to 300 of their fighter aircraft and over 200 pilots were killed or taken prisoner. The Allied air forces lost some 200 aircraft with little loss of life and were able to replace their losses within d ay s, w h er ea s t he Luftwaffe had greater difficulty in finding new pilots. Operation Bodenplatte was planned as a lightening blow to smash the British and American forces in north-west Europe. In fact it turned out to be the Luftwaffe's fin al ac t o f s el f-d est ru ct ion." Tiny scuff to bottom of front board. Dust jacket has minor rubbing. This is a new unread book. Castles controlled the countryside around them and provided bases from which squadrons of knights could ride out to attack an enemy. Though battles tend to be remembered they were a dangerous gamble. Just four years later its courageous young RAF pilots became the heroes of the Battle of Britain as they repelled the Luftwaffe attack. This tribute brings together a fascianting collection of writings by men who flew or admired her, from the top Allied flying ace of the Second World War, Air Vice Marshal 'Johnnie' Johnson, to his German counterpart, General Major Adolf Galland, and from such illustrious names as H.E. Bilingual French/English Introduction / Location of Documents / List of Persons / Captions to Illustrations / Indexes. Main text English only. This volume "deals with the evolution of Canadian policy during the middle years of the war, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, until the end of 1943. During those years, attention shifted from working out the bases of Canada's participation, as 'a belligerent second only to Britain as a Commonwealth military power', to an attempt to define this country's place in an Allied war effort dominated by much larger nations. That effort was important not only because Canadians were concerned about the conduct of the war itself but also because precedents were being established which would profoundly affect their interests once peace returned. It was a time of testing Canada's sovereignty and for determining the recognition which the country might expect for its contribution to victory." THE GREAT WAR AT SEA, 1914-1918., Hough, Richard.
15 Hough, Richard. THE GREAT WAR AT SEA, 1914-1918.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1983, first edition.
353 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0192158716 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(The author) describes the years leading up to 1914, the Kaiser's burning resentment of Britain's unchallenged supremacy at sea, and the headlong race to war, accelerated by the construction of the 'Dreadnought', the biggest, fastest, and most heavily gunned battleship in the world. During the course of the war there were shocks and disappointments for both sides. The Royal N a v y f o und itself dogged by a lack of secure bases, over-rigid battle orders, uncoordinated planning, and poor signalling. Operations, from the North Sea to the South Atlantic, were carried out against a background of feuds, scheming, and per so na li ty cl as hes at the Admiralty. Was there 'something wrong with our bloody ships', to echo David Beatty at Jutland? Could the appalling losses have been avoided during the Darndanelles campaign? Why were crucial signals received at the A dmi ral ty fil e d i nst ead of being acted upon? The Battle of Jutland was the greatest naval battle of the war, but also the greatest disappointment: who was really to blame for the inconclusive outcome? But despite the losses and the mistakes, the bril lia nce an d co urag e of many men shine through: the invaluable decoding work of 'Room 40'; the resilience of the commanders; the unfailing bravery and high morale of the men on the lower decks; and the excellent relations between the Brit ish and A meri can Nav ies t oward s the end of the war. It is Hough's contention that the Royal Navy not only beat the Kriegsmarine without resort to a bloody Trafalgar, but that its unrelenting pressure was the prime factor which led to the defea t on land of th e Ce ntra l Powe rs by the end of 1918. This account shows how that victory was achieved between 4 August 1914 and the abject surrender of the High Seas Fleet over four years later." 183 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "The year is 1943. Hitler's troops hold the European continent, and the Western Allies are bringing the war to the German homeland with a round-the-clock bombing campaign. Sergeant Jack Novey, an eighteen-year-old volunteer from the streets of Chicago, is hurled into the meatgrinder of the air war over France and Germany. He becomes a waist gunner on the ten-man crew of the 'Black Hawk', one B-17 among the hundreds operating out of English bases. Flying beyond the range of protecting fighters and into the teeth of the Luftwaffe, Jack and his crewmates go on some of the most dangerous and controversial raids of the war. Against heavy odds, they complete their 25 combat missions and live to tell about it." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has soft crease at top of front panel, very minor rubbing.
