PAST TENSE: CHARLIE'S STORY., Hobbs, Charlie.
1 Hobbs, Charlie. PAST TENSE: CHARLIE'S STORY.
Burnstown, Ontario General Store Publishing House 1994 1896182119 / 9781896182117 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
208 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, map. "Like many of his friends, Charlie Hobbs was eager to join up when (WWII) broke out in 1939. Who wanted to take a bank manager's course when you could fly with the RCAF? After qualifying as an airgunner, Charlie sailed for England in 1941 and spent the next two years flying over Europe with the #83 and #207 squadrons. Leaves spent in London and with Aunt Jennie in Scotland provided welcome respites from the terrors of war for Charlie and his chum, Cam, and both looked as if they would be two of the lucky ones. Then Cam was shot down. Six months later, Charlie, too, was shot down in a fiery crash that killed his pilot. Reunited in the same POW camp, Charlie and Cam found themselves forced to plumb depths of resourcefulness they never knew they had, in circumstances they never knew existed. 'Charlie's Story' is all about hope, friendship and the strength of the human spirit." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor rubbing.

3 Maling, Arthur. LUCKY DEVIL
London Victor Gollancz 1978 0575025581 / 9780575025585 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
243 pp, 8"H. "Brock Potter of the New York brokerage firm of Price, Potter and Petacque again faces a baffling problem. It all begins when a harmless old lady is pushed off a subway platform and killed. She happened to have Brock's name and address in her pocket, and Homicide want to know why. Brock can't tell them: he has never heard of her. But when he begins his own enquiries he finds that she was the chief stockholder of some worthless mining stock called Lucky Devil, and that a man from Salt Lake City had been putting pressure on her to sell to him. Brock and his left-hand man Brian Barth, pay a visit to Salt Lake City, and to the derelict mine, and have some very odd adventures with the very odd collection of people associated with Lucky Devil. But why whould anyone want to control of this worthless stock, and want it badly enough to commit murder (a couple of attempts are made on Brock's life too). No, the answer isn't that the old mine contains uranium. In fact, we defy any reader to come up with the solution before Mr Maling reveals it, for it's totally original. The intriguing brokerage background, the technical data, and the speed of an exciting story combine to make the book outstandingly suspenseful reading." Tiny tear at top of spine, small soft bump at bottom of front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny tear at top of spine, tiny chip at bottom of front flap-fold.

"This volume explores the growing shift from efforts toward unity within Christianity to broader, more far-reaching attempts at unity among all world religions (the 'wider ecumenism'). Editor Peter Phan traces this trend back to the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) but notes that, in the last ten years or so, the movement has become pronounced. (The book) consists of eighteen papers deriving from a recent ecumenical conference in Istanbul, Turkey. The authors seek to add their contributions to contemporary interfaith dialogue." At a time when much of the literature on the Middle East is either historical in nature or limited to specific target studies, Ailon Shiloh has compiled a volume of articles that integrate political, historical, economic, demographic, and health data into the study of culture and behavior. (His) introduction encapsulates a history of the area from the birth of civilization to the Six-Day-War of 1967. The articles that follow are written by a variety of perceptive scholars, many of whom are native to the Middle East or have lived and worked there for a number of years. The book is divided into five sections - The Distribution of Peoples, Cultures and Subcultures, Population Dynamics, Culture Change and Conservatism, and The Schoolteacher as Anthropologist - covering either the cultural history of the area or the effects of pressures toward fundamental culture change."
