YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY., Allen, Gillian.
1 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

4 Kennedy, Ludovic. MENACE: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE TIRPITZ.
Sidgwick and Jackson, London, 1979, first edition.
176 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0283984945 B&w photographs, maps. "This is the first book on the 'Tirpitz' to draw on the rich store of 'Ultra' signals, the German top secret coded naval signals that were decrypted by t he famous code-breakers of Bletchley Park and are only now being released to the Public Records Office. The transcripts of these intercepted signals put the story of the 'Tirpitz' in a fascinating new perspective, not only in revealing how th e y h e l ped the British to locate 'Tirpitz' and attack her, but also how faulty appreciation of them led to the disastrous scattering of Convoy PQ 17 in the false belief that 'Tirpitz' was about to attack it. The 'Tirpitz' and her sister-ship 'B is ma r ck ' we re the largest and fastest European battleships ever built. They were also the last. After a brief operation in the Atlantic, the 'Bismarck' was destroyed by British forces, and Hitler, worried that 'Tirpitz' would suffer a similar fa te, d ete rm ine d that she should be stationed out of harm's way, in a strategic position in the Norwegian fjords. There she acted as a fleet-in-being, presenting a continuing threat to the covoys carrying vital British war supplies to northe rn R ussi a w hich ra n a gauntlet on every voyage. With his considerable narrative gifts (the author) describes the devastating effects of the presence of this menace in the Norwegian fjords and the many heroic and ingenious attempts to sink her. " Sl ight bump ing a t to p/bo ttom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, light wrinkling at top edge of rear panel.
