ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND., Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison.
3 Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson (Educational), London, 1968.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 298762102 B&w drawings, floor plans, elevations. "Illustrated with over 70 line drawings and plans, the text spans over 2,000 years of architecture in England. The account begins with a discussion of the villas, camps and roads of Roman Britain, and shows how this heritage slowly decayed, giving way to the Romanesque imported by the conquering Normans. The soaring Gothic of the middle ages yields in its turn to another E u r o p e a n influence, the Renaissance, which acquires its own English character. The Baroque, Pallandian and Neo-Classic movements are then analysed, and the survey is brought right up to date with the industrial and scientific revolutions of t he n in et ee nt h and twentieth centuries, and their effects on techniques and styles. Dominant architectural styles are fully defined and illustrated, and the many examples given will stimulate a study in depth by means of visits to churches, ho use s, cas tle s, mus eu ms and modern streets and office blocks. The special value of this book for the student of architecture is the care taken by the author to illustrate his text at every point, with examples drawn from every field of arch itec ture - eccl esia sti cal and secular, domestic and institutional." BAROQUE IN ITALY., Lees-Milne, James.
8 Lees-Milne, James. BAROQUE IN ITALY.
B.T. Batsford, London, 1959, first edition.
216 pp, large 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans. "(Lees-Milne writes about) the development of building in Italy from the Mannerist period, that is, the later sixteenth century, to the emergence of Rococo in the early eighteenth century. (He) believes that Baroque in Italy was a religious manifestation, Latin, Catholic and primarily Roman and his book deals largely with ecclesiastical architecture in Rome itself. Piedmont was the next most i mportant influence in the style, and so, after introducting the colossal personalities of Bernini, Borromini and their disciples, he concentrates upon the work of Guarini, Juvara and their followers. But he is not conerned exclusively with ar c h i t e c ture; he discusses the Baroque style as it manifested itself in the work of the painters, such as Caravaggio and Pietro da Cortona and the sculptors, above all Bernini. In reading the book the reader has the grateful impression, not so mu ch o f be in g instructed, as of sharing in the author's own pleasures and discoveries, for Mr. Lees-Milne has a winning and persuasive style exceptional in a work of learning." Small label from bookstore on front pastedown, foxing marks on fro nt fre e e nd pap er, one small foxing mark on rear free endpaper, light wear at corners and top/bottom of spine. dust jacket has light edge wear wrinkling - mostly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two small tears (with crease between) on re ar pane l, l igh t fo xing marks on flaps and on flap-folds. B.T. Batsford, London, 1960, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans/elevations. "(S)tarting in the sixteenth century, author and reader begin their survey of Iberian Baroque with the Plateresque in Spain and the Manoel ine in Portugal, and continue it until, two hundred or so years later, they reach the High Baroque conclusion of Castile, Seville and Granada, and the Rococo decadence of eighteenth-century Portugal. On the way they will have examined some ar c h i t e c tural and sculptural masterpieces of astonishing quality and individuality: the palaces or houses of Mafra, Queluz and La Granja; Santiago da Compostela, the Escorial, the Cartuja of Coimbra; sculpture at Macarena, Alcobaca and Arouca; t he T ra ns pa ra nte of Toledo Cathedral, the convents of Bom Jesus, Tomar and Evora. - These, and many other churches, cathedrals, palaces and domestic buildings are illustrated in a collection of nearly 100 pictures which show, as unmistakably as Mr . L ees -Mi lne 's text, that Baroque, while it transcends frontiers, partakes as fully as any other style in regional and national characteristics." ROYAL PALACES: WINDSOR CASTLE - A SHORT HISTORY., Robinson, John Martin.
12 Robinson, John Martin. ROYAL PALACES: WINDSOR CASTLE - A SHORT HISTORY.
Michael Joseph / Royal Collection, London, 1996.
144 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071814158X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "Continuously used by British monarchs since the Middle Ages, Windsor Castle is an architectural epitome of the nation's history. Its sk yline of battlements, turrets and the great Round Tower is instantly recognizable throughout the world. In this book, which includes over 150 colour illustrations, architectural historian John Martin Robinson describes the history of this mo s t s p l e n did and significant of European royal palaces. From its beginnings as a Norman defensive fortification, medieval expansion converted the Castle into a vast Gothic palace, of which St George's Chapel is the principal surviving archite ct ur a l gl or y. Charles II reconstructed the Upper Ward, employing architect Hugh May and craftsmen such as Verrio and Grinling Gibbons to create new baroque state apartments. With subsequent remodelling by George IV and his architect Jeffry Wy atv ill e, t his wa s t r ansformed again into a truly magnificent palace that became the principal seat of the monarchy. In Queen Victoria's reign the social life of the Castle settled into a pattern which is familiar today. Windsor is the sett ing for roy al fami ly l ife, s tate visits of foreign monarchs and the annual celebration of the Order of the Garter, one of the oldest orders of Christian chivalry, and one with which the Castle is specially associated. This fascinating story of the Cas tle inc ludes the acqui sit ion by successive monarchs of its artistic treasures, such as the Old Master drawings and French decorative art, that now form an incomparable part of the Royal Collection." 13 Stammers, Michael. FIGUREHEADS AND SHIP CARVING.
Annapolis, Maryland Naval Institute Press 2005 1591442741 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
120 pp, oblong 8vo (8 1/2" H x 9 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs and reproductions. "Here is a concise and comprehensive history of figureheads and ship carving from ancient Egypt to the present, with the main emphasis, however, on the great period of ship decoration that lasted from the late sixteenth century to the end of the age of sail. Since the earliest times there has been an almost universal urge to personify or decorate ships, but with the development of navies in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the projection of power became reflected in the riotous, allegorical baroque carvings that adorned prestige ships. Later carving, both in Europe and America, reflected more austere classical styles and spread to merchant ships whose owners took great pride in their vessels. There are chapters on the ship carvers themselves and their special skills and training, while the present -day collections of figureheads in museums around the world are listed. A useful reference work for ship modellers and a delight for those with an interest in the age of sail, this new work will also enlighten all those visitors to museums who admire the colourful and characterful figureheads, now sadly dislocated from the ships they once adorned." Very light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling.

Spring Books, London, nd.
195 pp, large square 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour plates. "One of the most fascinating periods in European art history, the Baroque marks a triumphant break with the rules and restrictive for mulas of the Renaissance. Its genius was Bernini, whose sustained imaginative powers and incredible technical skill brought the Baroque style to its fullest maturity. In lesser hands, where the mastery of technique was not so assured and the cr e a t ive imagination not so well disciplined, the pitfalls are all too obvious. No style perhaps has ever captured the imagination quite so quickly; throughout Europe commissions poured in, wealthy landowners and rich merchants vying with each oth er t o express their ambitions and achievements in building, painting and sculpture, in itself an interesting sidelight on social history. The Czech lands were no exception, and the variety and high level of achievement in the contemporary Baroque st yle a re amply illustrated by the plates in this present volume. The accompanying text supplies a full documentation of Czech sculpture of the period and discusses in detail a number of important artists whose work deserves to be more widely k nown ." SICILY, SARDINIA AND CORSICA., Whelpton, Eric and Barbara.
16 Whelpton, Eric and Barbara. SICILY, SARDINIA AND CORSICA.
Robert Hale, London, 1960, first edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "Though the three large islands described in this highly entertaining book are situated in the same part of the Mediterranean, they are each amazingly different. In Sicily the immortal spirit of ancient Greece may be recaptured, just as well as in Hellas itself. But besides its temples and theatres, often on magic shores, there is the curious, dominating spell of Etna. The authors not only describe Palermo, the capi tal created by the Normans, Byzantines and Arabs, but Taormina, Syracuse and Agrigento, and the wonderful but little-know baroque cities, the Aeolian Islands, and Erice, the Eryx of the ancients. Except for Alghero and one or two resorts o f t h e N o r th-West, Sardinia remains practically unexplored by the British tourist. Yet it is a land of extraordinary fascination, whose ancient customs and traditions have been maintained more than anywhere else in Europe. And there are lite ra l ly h un d re ds o f miles of wonderful, deserted beaches and secluded little fishing ports. Corsica is only ten miles away to the north, but the scenery is on an even grander scale. The mountains rise to 10,000 feet, there are dense forests , d ee p v all eys o nly re ach ed on foot, and a coast picturesque beyond belief. And though the Corsicans talk an Italian dialect, the soil is French and the atmosphere accordingly gay, lively and distinctive. Of all three Eric and Barbara Whe lpto n w rite wit h th e k nowl edge , fa miliarity and zest which have made their books essential reading for the traveller, past, present and to come." Small creases at bottom corner of half-title page, a few tiny foxing marks on rear pastedown and o n fr ont i nside hing e, a few foxin g mar ks on top of textblock, small bump at top of spine, very small bump at bottom of spine.
