ARMISTICE 1918., Barclay, C.N., Brigadier.
1 Barclay, C.N., Brigadier. ARMISTICE 1918.
A.S. Barnes, New York, (1969).
155 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "After more than four years of the most fearful war in the world's history, the end came almost unexpectedly, with dramatic suddenness. At five o'clock on the morning of November 11, 1918, Marshal Foch and Admiral Wemyss, representing the Allies, concluded an armistice with German civil and military representatives. There had been a general expectation that the war would last well into 1919. The author...examines the various factors that led to the earlier conclusion of the war. He analyzes conditions in the summer of 1918 following Ludendorff's massive offensive in March...also probes the plans of the Central Powers, the Allies, and the American Expeditionary Forces, emphasizing the range of disagreements on the methods by which German could be defeated. He then goes on to consider the first and second phases of the Allied offensives of August 1918, which at last cracked German resistance. Finally the Armistice itself is studied in detail. The penultimate chapter, which comments on military operations, includes the bizarre account of the Kaiser's unheralded arrival in Holland..." Tiny marks and faint ghost marks on endpapers from old tape (removed), thin ink line smudge on page 117, a few pages with soft or full corner creases, slight bubbling to front pastedown. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, some faint writing indentations on front panel, two small closed tears. VG-/VG

9 Cane, Bruce. (Deward Barnes) IT MADE YOU THINK OF HOME. THE HAUNTING JOURNAL OF DEWARD BARNES, CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE: 1916-1919.
Dundurn, Toronto, 2004, first edition.
318 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550025120 "This is (the story of Deward Barnes, a Canadian soldier of WWI), in his words, written as the events of the Great War were unfolding. Illustrated with Deward's sketches and contemporary photos, (it) takes us into the mind of this ordinary Canadian soldier, trapped in a world in which he had to pay a terrible price in order to survive. In 1917, Deward was assigned to the firing squad that was to take the life of Pr i v a te Harold Lodge, who had been convicted of desertion by a court martial. Lodge was one of 23 Canadians executed during the war by their own brothers at arms. It was an experience that changed Deward forever. Bruce Cane has provided valuable i ns ig hts into Deward's words by juxtaposing (them) with the official accounts of these events, along with other first-hand accounts from the period, in order to capture the nuance of each of his entries. Deward Barnes' diary takes us into the t ren che s a nd firing lines of the Western Front like no other first-hand Canadian account before. Deward's is the voice of the Canadian soldier, Everyman in khaki, the men who today lie in their graves in the fields of Flanders and Picardy." "Alan Cooper writes about an operation which at the time and ever since has captured the imagination of the world - the attack on the German dams in May 1943. This forms a deeply-res earched history of one of the most successful operations of the Second World War carried out by the famous 617 Squadron led by Guy Gibson. This account includes the whole lead up to the final mission; the development of the bouncing bomb, the f o r m i ng of 617 Squadron and the intense course of training carried out to make the operation a success. The raid itself is viewed from both British and German camps; many of the aircrew who took part in 617 operations give their accounts, as d o se ve ra l Germans, including Albert Speer, the Armaments Minister. All in all, the book recreates the excitement and aura of danger and uncertainty which surrounded the dam busters' mission, giving the reader the full story of one of the great es t epi sod es of the war." SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE., Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland.
14 Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland. SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE.
New York Barnes & Noble. 1993 156619086X / 9781566190862 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
392 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "For this witty account of the European nobility, (the author) has taken as his inspiration that most illustrious of social registers: the 'Almanch de Gotha', first published in 1764 and still on the shelves of all who look back with nostalgia upon 'that happy period - when the monarchic principle was so firmly anchored in people's minds that it seemed impossible for a country to exist unless there was a sovereign, emperor, king, prince, or grand duke at its head'. The author, himself a scion of a princely family, has inherited a clear perspective of the main thoroughfares of history, and a great knowledge of its byways. He approaches his subject with a light touch, even at times with irreverence - for, in his own words: 'The secrets of the Gotha, whispered to me by the ghosts of long-dead chamberlains, evoke the spirit on an age whose frivolities alone have survived. The inheritance of the duchies of Schleswig or Holstein no longer vexes the world at large; but the fate of the unfortunate Electress of Hanover, shut up for thirty years by her husband for having shown too much enthusiasm for the handsome Koenigsmark, still moves us; and the madness of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the indecorous loves of Queen Isabella of Spain, or the eccentricities of Caroline, Princess of Wales, are more interesting today than the War of the Roses, the continence of Scipio or the virtues of Blanche of Castile. It is by their weaknesses that men are human, and kings cannot escape being men. But though their weaknesses may be the cause of their undoing, it is their humanity that most engages our sympathy today. Bad examples are the easiest to follow ; they are also the most amusing to relate." Dust jacket has slight fading to color and lettering on spine, minor edge wrinkling and minor browning on inside top edge.

"(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. 20 Gough, Barry M., editor. THE JOURNAL OF ALEXANDER HENRY THE YOUNGER, 1799-1814. VOLUME II - THE SASKATCHEWAN AND COLUMBIA RIVERS.
Toronto The Champlain Society 1992 0969342519 / 9780969342519 Limited Edition Hard Cover Near Fine
Volume II only. Pagination runs 329 - 781 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Orange/red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine, top edge gilt. No. 0531 of an edition of twelve hundred and fifty. "This second volume of the Journal of the North West Company fur trader Alexander Henry the Younger portrays Henry against the larger panorama of the North American fur trade. We find him in the first entry, that for 8 August 1808, taking his leave from the Pembina post in the Red River Valley. He is destined for the Saskatchewan country and a different departmental assignment from that he previously had. We trace his route upstream along the waterways of the Saskatchewan River system, and we follow him into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in what is now southwestern Alberta. In the course of these trading activities that cover the years 1808 through 1813, Henry meets the surveyor and discoverer David Thompson, and on occasion the latter features heavily in the narrative. During these years on the prairies and plains of western North America Henry writes extensive commentary on various native peoples. The last phase of the Journal, comprising the years 1813 and 1814, brings Henry into the watershed of the Columbia River and the Pacific Coast.. The Nor'Westers were in a very insecure position owing to the threat of United States naval intervention during the War of 1812 and to the rivalry of John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company. The tension of the narrative builds with these enlarge-ments to Henry's activities, and it ends in his accidental death." From the Editor's Note. Minor rub on fore-edge of text block otherwise clean and bright.
