152 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0134516427 "Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 color illustrations, the Atlas looks at the history of Jerusalem with maps, drawings, and isometric reconstructions, all updated with the latest archaeological evidence. Jerusalem is perhaps the most interesting city on earth. Sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, it dates back to at least the third millenium BCE. David made it his capital; Solomon glorified it with his Te mple; it fell to Babylonia in 586 BCE and was rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah; it was the city of the Maccabees and of the Herods, and the place where Jesus was tried and crucified. Titus razed its buildings and destroyed the Temple in 70 CE. A f t e r t he revolt of Bar Kochba, the Romans made Jerusalem a pagan shrine. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099; in 1187, Muslims, led by Saladin, captured the city and held it almost continuously until the British took control after World Wa r I. Th e B ritish Mandate ended in 1948 when the State of Israel was born. In 1967, Israel reunited the city. Special features in the Atlas include: concise, easy-to-read text; four-color illustrations, maps, drawings, and photos throughout ; de fi nit i ve an d a uthoritative information; selected bibliography of further readings; thorough index; an up-to-date approach, based on the latest findings. For anyone interested in biblical archaeology; geography; Jewish studies, culture, an d his tor y; a nd th e h isto ry and culture of the Middle East, (this book) is certain to be an invaluable resource." "Credited with seventy-two victories, Canadian ace Billy Bishop ranked fourth among Allied and German aces of World War I. Long out of prin t, this aviation classic has been expanded with new photographs and updated by supplementary material on First World War planes and pilots....(Bishop, who received every British decoration of valor, including the Victoria Cross) was also a sk i l l f u l writer and 'Winged Warfare' vividly recreates those early days - both comic and tragic - when the deadly 'airborne jalopy' was getting its trial run. He describes the dank, slimy and boggy mud that soured him on land combat. And the w ri ti ng c ra ck l es when (he) relives flying his Nieuport Scout, armed with a single Lewis gun. It was in this tiny plane that he dodged the 'Archies' (German anti-aircraft batteries and outfought and outmaneuvered the scarlet-winged Fokkers flo wn by Bar on von Ri ch thofen's formidable squadron. Here, too, are the joys and terrors of daily dogfights, a life of extraordinary contrasts. Toronto University of Toronto Press / The osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History 1994 0802006566 / 9780802006561 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(This) portrait of James Chalmers McRuer (1890-1985), one of Canada's most outstanding jurists, sets out to discover the character of the man who played a key role in the evolution of Canadian law. His career of more than fifty years included service on the Archambault Royal Commission on Penal Reform from 1936 to 1938. He was appointed judge on the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1944, chief justice of the Ontario High Court in 1945, and from 1964 to 1971 he was head of the Royal Commission Inquiry into Civil Rights. From 1964 to 1977 he was chairman and later vice-chairman of the Ontario Law Reform Commission. The driving spirit behind McRuer was his passion for justice, rising from his conviction that the justice system should serve the oppressed, regardless of their ability to pay. As a law reformer, McRuer saw a pressing need to adapt the law so that it could better serve all people in the changed conditions of the twentieth century. He possessed a sharp sensitivity to the often hidden injustices existing in an advanced industrial society and a bureaucratic state." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

12 Cahill, Jack. WORDS OF WAR.
Toronto Deneau 1987 0888791461 / 9780888791467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w map, photographs. "Jack Cahill, a senior reporter for 'The Toronto Star', was a one-man bureau in all parts of South East Asia. He witnessed the fall of Danang and was there when the Khmer Rouge conquered Cambodia. In what remains one of the most harrowing and human stories of that dramatic period, Cahill escaped from Saigon as one of the first 'boat people' aboard a decrepit refugee ship. 'Words of War' is populated with colourful characters, from the 19th century British and American newsmen, who covered wars in the Crimea, the Sudan, South Africa and America, to the modern day men and women who continue to risk their lives for a story in the age of telecommunications and computers. There are also courageous drivers, the officials, the bar girls, the veterans and the homeless children. In the end, there is only the bitter tragedy of war's victims. Cahill returned to Vietnam in 1986. He gives a haunting portrayal of that sad country today and the reactions of the first American veterans to meet their former enemies face to face since the war. (A) reporter's book, full of the frightening facts of war and the journalists who reported them first hand. It is a compelling, dramatic memoir of places and people that will never be forgotten." McGraw-Hill, New York, 1978.
231 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070169870 Map. "Perry fought perhaps the most perfect single battle in American naval history. More - he insured the success of William Henry Harrison's Northwest Territory campaign, in which he soldiered as a volunteer aide to General Harrison. He ended Tecumseh's plans for an Indian Confederation. He dashed forever Britain's dream of blocking the United States in its westward march. In 1811 Perry was named to create a f l e e t on Lake Erie. He chose Presque Ile Bay as the one harbor safe from the existing British lake fleet. Perry spent the spring and summer of 1813 doing the impossible - building first a shipyard, then a fleet of ten vessels in the frontie r o ut po st o f Erie, Pennsylvania. The bar at Erie was not deep enough to pass Perry's ships out into the lake. (But neither could the British enter the bay over the shallows; hence his choice of harbor.) He bided his time till his opponent Ca pt ai n R obe rt Bar clay sailed away for a brief respite. Then his men, in a fenzy of activity, emptied their ships of all guns and heavy gear and buoyed them with pontoons until they could be boosted across the sandbar. Perry got them safely int o d eep wat er i n t he n ick of time. And when Barclay's fleet came up to resume the blockade of Erie, Perry bluffed them away with his still undermanned and almost unarmed flotilla. Once reinforced by a unit under the command of Jesse D. Elliot t, P erry atta cked the Briti sh fleet in his flagship 'Lawrence'; Elliott was to bring the 'Niagara' into action beside him. Elliott, unaccountably, hung back, and the 'Lawrence' was shot to pieces by the three strongest Britishers. How Perry tu rned certa in def eat i nto a monu mental victory is one of the greatest naval achievements of all time." 15 Frank, Barbara E. MANDE POTTERS & LEATHERWORKERS: ART AND HERITAGE IN WEST AFRICA.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, (1998), Ist printing.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1560987944 Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos and drawings. "Among the Mande-speaking groups dispersed throughout much of West Africa, certain artists - including potters and l eatherworkers - form a spiritually powerful social class in which gender determines craft specialization. Ceramic water jars and cooking pots are made only by the wives and female relatives of blacksmiths. Leather objects such as knife shea t h s , a m ulet cases, and, more recently, western-style shoes and bags are produced by male leatherworkers. While these objects display features common to those of other West African groups, the manner in which they are produced has remained dis ti nc tl y M an de . Analyzing the work of Mande potters and leatherworkers, (the author) argues that studying craft technologies in addition to object styles is essential to reconstructing the art heritage of an ethnically complex region. Drawing on ar cha eo lo gic al and historical evidence as well as her field research in Mali, she shows how tools and practices such as potters' use of convex molds and leatherworkers' adherence to specific knife blade shapes serve to distinguish the good s ma de b y Ma nde ar tist s f rom those of neighboring groups. She also discusses the pride the potters take in their healing and spiritual knowledge, and the sense of difference between craftsmen who specialize exclusively in leatherworking and those who doubl e as bar ds an d mu sicians. Examining the roles of Mande leatherworkers and potters in the rise and fall of empires, the development of trans-Saharan trade networks, and the spread of Islam, Frank questions the 'one-tribe, one-st yle' i nterp retati ons t hat h ave do minat ed studies of West African art. Focusing on two traditions that have been little studied, (this book) explores the complex, shifting relationships among the identities of Mande craftspeople, the objects they cr eate, and the techn ologie s they use." "Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war, (Neville Duke) found himself, aged 19, as a young fighter pilot with the crack 92 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, in 1941. That spring and summer he survived the air battles over Northern France with the Biggin Hill Wing, often flying as wingman to the legendary 'Sailor' Malan - Fighter Command's top-scoring pilot at that time. In those months he learnt the fighter pilot's trade, lessons that were to prove invaluable when, in November, he was posted to a very different war in the Western Desert. Flying the famous 'Shark-Mouthed' P40B Tomahawk fighters with 112 Sqn, he quickly established himself as one of the most successful pilots in North Africa, winning the DFC and bar. By 1943 he was flight commander with his old 92 Squadron which had also become part of the Desert Air Force. Again flying Spitfires, he had scored twenty-one by the end of the Tunisian Campaign, was a warded the DSO, then given command of 145 Spitfire Squadron in Italy. Leading this unit in the summer of 1944 he brought his score to twenty-eight, returning home in late 1944 as the highest scoring pilot in the Mediterranean Theatre..." A.S. Barnes, South Brunswick, 1971, reprint.
277 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0498077896 "(This book) was first published in 1928, and has now been reprinted in a new format. With the flick of his rod and a twist of his pen, this well-known sportsman-novelist takes you with him on his trips through inland waters. From Pennsylvania to Oregon, from the calm waters of the Delware to the rushing torrents of the Klamath River, Mr. Grey casts and strikes his way. Salmon, black bass, and steelhead trout come tumbling to his line, though none too easily. There are many disappointments and many battles lost. The author tells stories of his fishing adventures with excitement and zeal. His vivid descriptions of the places he fished and the people he fished with are filled with enthusiasm. You'll learn about his techniques for outwitting the piscatorial species and the variety of baits he experimented with. You'll read about the many types of reels and rods, and those that he used. Come with Zane Grey as he takes you to the Rogue River, the most beautiful stream in Oregon, and the coldest, deepest, and swiftest he ever fished. Read about Ken, a fellow fisherman, who followed his catch down Rocky Riffle, forgetting about the deep channel below. Feel the author's anxiety as he battles with a Chinook salmon on the line. The long tug gave him aching arms and cramped hands, but he won - a prize 57-pound beauty. The 100 illustrations, many of them full-page photographs taken by the author, give you an even fuller opportunity of following every joyous tug of the line." George, the 'single man' of the title, a middle-aged professor of English, has every reason to live in the past, but even the memory of his friend, Jim, killed in a car crash, does not prevent him from resolutely living in the present. From the first moment of waking consciousness the novel fans out over the day, taking in a hilariously funny lecture on a Huxley novel, and culminating in an unexpected meeting with Kenny, one of his students, in a bar on the seafront. Mr Isherwood has never been so mercilessly frank as here - though the frankness is tempered by his usual wit and compassion." Tiny dent in top margin of page 7, very light browning to edges of text block, two tiny dents on bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has publisher's clip across bottom of front flap and printed "Price 16s net in U.K. only", both flaps have the extended white areas that appear on some copies (see scan), light browning to spine and top edge of rear panel, some horizontal puckers/wrinkles in the publisher applied laminate, very minor edge wear/wrinkling. Dust jacket is now protected in removable mylar sleeve.
