1 Appleby, Edna (Hill). CANMORE: THE STORY OF AN ERA.
Canmore, Alberta Self-published 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good- Signed by Author
163 pp, 11 1/4" H. Signed by author on front free endpaper. B&w photographs, reproductions, fold-out school group (1926) photograph facing title page. Records the history of town of Canmore and the surrounding area. "Once located within the boundaries of Rocky Mountain Park, you observe Canmore changing from a CPR town into the only thriving coal mining town of the entire Bow Valley. Pictures and records of the once existing towns of Bankhead, Anthracite, Georgetown and Kananaskis are spotlighted as they enhanced the development of Canmore itself into the town it now is. The history of Exshaw and its cement plant is also recorded. Traced throughout the book is the development of the Canmore Mines from 1887 to 1974 with a subjective view of the miner and his contribution to Canmore." 3 Brodribb, John. LNER COUNTRY STATIONS.
Ian Allan, London, 1988, first edition.
144 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071101714X Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, floor plans, elevations. "It is almost impossible to describe a typical LNER country station - the nearest it is possible to come is to say that somewhere like Otterington was one, although it was certainly not typical. The problem of finding a common strain of styles arises from the diversity of the LNER's consituents, and its adoption of a policy of decentralised manageme n t. In addition to this, the relative poverty of the company mitigated against renewal and rebuilding. (This book) is structured along the lines of these constituent companies and, with the aid of over 170 photographs and 20 line drawings, (the a ut hor) relates the histories and unifying features of the many varied stations and branches in the LNER's area of operations." Light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, mino r r ubbing, soft crease across bottom edge of rear panel, very small dint on rear hinge. Very Good+/Very Good

5 Campbell, Robert E. Foreword by T.U. "Tommy" Primrose. I WOULD DO IT AGAIN: REMINISCENCES OF THE ROCKIES.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good-
204 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "Urged many times to write the story of his life, Mr. Robert Campbell, now in his eighty-eighth year, finally acceded to the request. The result is this very readable book of reminiscence, rich in humour and history, adventure and anecdote, told by a master storyteller. In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. This is not only a fascinating story, but a valuable record of early days when the Rockies were just beginning to attract attention as a tourist centre for the world." Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, creases at top of rear panel, several edge tears archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling.

London Folio Society 1970 Second Edition (revised). Hard Cover Very Good-

Gray slipcase with blue top and base, gray endpapers with map on pastedowns. B&w reproductions, maps. "(W)hen news arrived in Edinburgh that the Young Pretender (Charles Edward Stuart) had landed, (Johnstone) was one of the first to join the cause. Through relations, he gained an introduction to Lord George Murray and was appointed his aide-de-camp. Also, for a short period, he was assistant aide-de-camp to the prince himself. This composite duty he not unnaturally found increasingly wearing, and when, after Prestonpans, he was given a captain's commission, he raised his own company and with it joined the Duke of Perth's regiment. His own account tells how he fought through the whole campaign and of his wanderings following Culloden. After a number of narrow escapes, some feats of considerable endurance, and not a few interludes of amorous dallying, he finally escaped to Holland." from the Introduction. Light fading to spine color, minor rubbing on boards, previous owner's bookplate on free front endpaper. Slipcase has light edge wear/rubbing.

CITY TO CITY., Morris, Jan. Drawings by Barry Blitt.
10 Morris, Jan. Drawings by Barry Blitt. CITY TO CITY.
Macfarlane Walter & Ross, Toronto, 1990.
173 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921912102 B&w illustrations. "During her regular visits to Canada over the past thirty-five years, (Morris) has watched its evolution with a mixture of empathy, fascination, and frustration. She finds the preoccupation with national identity baffling, since she herself has no trouble in differentiating Canada from every other country in the world. Nowhere in Canada, she says, could she ever imagine herself to be in the United States. The pursuit of happiness nowadays, she believes, can be better pursued north of the border. Indeed, she described the Canadian society as 'on the whole, the most admirable on earth', and writes that she is 'not ashamed to say that I have grown to love the country'. Not that 'City to City' is all sweetness and praise. Her assessments of the ten places she writes about - St John's, Newfoundland; St Andrews, New Brunswick; Montreal; Ottawa; Toronto; Saskatoon; Edmonton; Banff; Vancouver; and Yellowknife - are never predictable. In fact, her reaction is sometimes the opposite of what Canadians might expect. Some of the cities that Canadians consider 'world class' fall, in her view, well short of the mark. In smaller places, which many urban Canadians dismiss as provincial and uninteresting, she discovers great value and appeal. Canadians may not be flattered by everything Jan Morris has to say about their country, but no reader will fail to be stimulated, informed and entertained. Deeply personal and yet brilliantly researched, highly readable and yet profoundly resonant, (it) is an astute portrayal of a country poised on the brink between true nationhood and disintegration." Light browning to fore-edge and top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

CASTLEGUARD., Muir, Dalton and Ford, Derek. Foreword by J. Keith Fraser.
11 Muir, Dalton and Ford, Derek. Foreword by J. Keith Fraser. CASTLEGUARD.
Ottawa Ministry of Environment 1985 0660117908 / 9780660117904 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
Unpaginated, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). 113 colour photographs, plus three maps. "Beside the Columbia Icefield, in Banff National Park, lies a narrow valley. One end of the valley is a barren arctic waste, newly formed by the retreat of the ice ages. Gradually, it grades into an alpine meadow and then into a northern coniferous forest. The valley and the glaciers around it gell the story of how the landscapes of Canada were formed, from the great ice ages to this summer's flowers. Partway down the valley there is a cave mouth, the sole entrance to an enormous complex of vaults and passage-ways under the valley and glacier. In the cold darkness of the Castleguard caves water has been forming and enlarging passages for hundreds of thousands of years. Glistening white stalactites, among the purest in the world, have been growing for millennia. Come celebrate Castleguard with the adventurers who have explored and photographed the austere beauty of this land shaped by water, cold and time." Contents: Foreword; Castleguard; The Two Landscapes of Castleguard; Populating a New Land; A Succession of Plant Communities; Water Makes Life Possible; The Little Ice Age; Cave Formation: The Surface; Cave Formation: Underground; Return to Light; The Experience; An Overview; Maps; Photographers/Acknowledgements. Tiny bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing on rear panel, very small wrinkle at top of spine, 2" crease at bottom edge of rear panel, minor browning at top edge of flap-folds.

ANDRE BIELER: AN ARTIST'S LIFE AND TIMES., Smith, Frances K. Introduction by Michael Bell.
12 Smith, Frances K. Introduction by Michael Bell. ANDRE BIELER: AN ARTIST'S LIFE AND TIMES.
Toronto Merritt 1980 092088606X / 9780920886069 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Andre Bieler.
176 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions, b&w photographs. "This study of the life and work of Andre Bieler, one of Canada's most important living artists, spans eighty-three years of his life and art in Europe, the United States and Canada. It studies him against the flowering of twentieth-century Canadian art, a fascinating history in itself. (S)tarts with (his) birth in Switzerland in 1896, tracing his European family roots, his World War I experiences and his traditional artist's apprenticeship in Europe, his arrival in Canada as a young artist and subsequent exploration of the rural 'habitant' way of life in Quebec's L'ile d'Orleans and on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Most important, the author shows us the extraordinary creative energy of Andre Bieler, his exuberance and intense love of people and life that, even in his eighties, keep him experimenting in art, traveling across Canada, Europe and Mexico in search of his subject, and which define him as an artist of classic, versatile and sustained talent." Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, 1" faint line indentation on front panel, tiny dent/closed perforation on rear hinge.
