1 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Hard Cover Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

2 Campbell, Duncan C. GLOBAL MISSION: THE STORY OF ALCAN. VOLUME I: TO 1950.
Ontario Publishing 1985 0919354068 / 9780919354067 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Inscribed By Author
438 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "Harold H. Peacock: / With warm regards and appreciation / for a long friendship / Duncan C. Campbell / April 1985." B&w photographs. "In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders." Volume I only. Very light wrinkling at top/botom of spine, minor cocking to spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny and small edge tears - some with creases at top of rear panel - archivally taped, small line indentation on spine, very light rubbing.

THE PENNY HISTORIES: A STUDY OF CHAPBOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS OVER TWO CENTURIES., Neuburg, Victor E.
4 Neuburg, Victor E. THE PENNY HISTORIES: A STUDY OF CHAPBOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS OVER TWO CENTURIES.
New York Harcourt, Brace & World 1969 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
227 pp, 12mo (7" H), red cloth spine with lettering/border in gold, cream paper-covered boards reproducing the illustration from the dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "For this, the second volume in Milestones in Children's Literature, Victor E. Neuburg has written an admirable study of the famous 'penny histories' or chapbooks which formed almost the entire reading matter of the poorer people in eighteenth-century England. At a time when children's literature had a strong religious and didactic basis, these little paperbound books, however crudely produced and illustrated, kept alive traditional tales of romance and adventure, and fed the imagination of young and old alike. Facsimiles of seven of the 'penny histories' are included in the present volume, and there is a detailed bibliography of source material." The chapbooks included in facsimile reproduction are: The History of Guy of Warwick; Fairy Stories; The Interesting Story of the Children in the Wood; An Elegy on the Death and Burial of Cock Robin; A Peep at the Various Nations of the World; Toads and Diamonds; The Rod. Includes a section on chapbooks in America. Tiny mark on verso of free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear - archivally taped.

5 Roberts, Chris. HEAVY WORDS LIGHTLY THROWN: THE REASON BEHIND THE RHYME.

176 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "Was little Jack Horner a squatter? 'Baa, baa, Black Sheep' a bleat about taxation? What did Jack and Jill do on that hill? Who was Mary? And why was she contrary? This witty and ingenious book delves into the hidden meanings of the most innocuous-sounding nursery rhymes, revealing a seething subtext of sexual innuendo, religious hatred and political subversion. (It) provides a fascinating history lesson, teases out some alarming Freudian interpretations, and makes entertaining connections to contemporary political and popular culture." A few very tiny specks of faint glue residue on rear board. Dust jacket has 2' crease at bottom of rear hinge, very minor edge wear.
