The changes in the face of Europe that have marked the growth of nations, that went on through the Middle Ages, and have continued to the time of Wellington and Napoleon, the Franco-Prussian War, and to the merging to-day of the military in the industrial struggle, may be followed in the coloured maps which come first in the volume." The b&w line maps include: "Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World", "Famous British Battles" and "Maps Illustrating Districts Connected with Famous Books and Their Authors". Don Mills, Ontario Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1982 0889025878 / 9780889025875 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w photographs. "The immigrants who came to Canada in the ten years following the Second World War settled in a booming land with many new jobs to fill. The immigrants' reasons for coming here and their experiences in the new society were as varied as their own backgrounds. First were the war brides, some married after only a few weeks of courtship; there were refugees and displaced persons from e astern Europe and Russia; there were British and Dutch farm families, and thousands of others looking for a fresh start far from battle-scarred Europe. Then in the fifties came the Asians and blacks. Jean Bruce, herself an immigrant, tells through hundreds of in-depth intervies across Canada of these people as they fulfilled their dreams, and dispelled fears while establishing new roots. She has ranged the country in selecting photos from churches, ethnic organizations, private albums, the Public Archives, and diverse libraries and museums. In dealing not only with the immigrant experience, but also with changing attitudes towards immigration within Canadian society, (she) has raised issues which will continue to be important and controversial. But most importantly, she has created a portrait of Canada at a vibrant period in its history, a period which was to change the face of the nation forever." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, light browning.

QUADRANTUS REX., Coulehan, Norbert.
6 Coulehan, Norbert. QUADRANTUS REX.
Macmillan, London, 1959, first edition.
298 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In the second year B.C. the Emperor Augustus decided to call a conference for world peace, 'Pax Mundana', and despatched a young sea tribune, Titus to collect and escort to Rome the three gr eat Kings from Africa, Asia and the Baltic. This, in the first place, is the story of how Titus carried out his unusual assignment, the hazards and dangers of his voyages and his difficulties, both practical and diplomatic, with his noble c h a r g e s . But no less important than the sea tribune is Quadrantus, the Master of the squaresailer in which he travelled. It is soon apparent that this is no ordinary ship and Quadrantus is no ordinary master: a giant of a man, he runs his du mb c re w wi th u n canny precision and his navigation and seamanship verge on the miraculous. After the fruitless conference, Titus and Quadrantus escort the three Kings on what seems a hopeless mission to King Herod. Guided by a strange st a r, the Ki ngs a re lan ded n ear Philippi, and the half-whispered stories of the phenomena which heralded the Birth of Christ and the legend of a fourth King who set off for Bethlehem with his fellows yet failed to arrive, are given an unexpect ed tw ist when see n t hro ugh the mir ror of Norbert Coulehan's narrative." "Designed at the height of the Cold War to be the ultimate surveillance platform, the SR-71 was operated exclusively by the USAF's 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. In this new edition of Paul Crickmore's best-selling history, the fruits of an alliance between NASA and the Lockheed project (which began when NASA engineers lent a ha nd at Edwards AFB way back in 1967) are reviewed, as the 'space men' use the SR-71 for experiments on the outer edge of the atmosphere. Also new is a complete list of USAF missions flown out of Kadena, detailing duration, pilots, Reconnais s a n c e S y s tems Officers, altitude, etc. It is a fascinating addition to the history of operational flights over North Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, North Korea, Yemen, the Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iran and Cuba....Also revealed are details o f fl ig ht s c on du ct ed from Beale AFB, in California and RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, England, into the Arctic Circle and over the Baltic to monitor the movements of Soviet nuclear submarines. 9 Dominy, John. Foreword by Airey Neave. THE SERGEANT ESCAPERS.
Ian Allan, London, (1974), Ist edition.
136 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "Less well known (than stories of the Colditz and Stalag III escapers) but equally heroic were those of the large numbers of Royal Air Force NCO pilots, observers and air gunners who fell into German hands...A particularly notorius NCO camp was Heydekrug on the Baltic coast in what was East Prussia - the scene of one of the most remarkable POW exploits of the war. A tough, daring and resourceful escaper, Warrant Officer George Grimson, succeeded in establishing an escape route within Nazi Germany itself. Destined to be one of the great classic escape books, 'Sergeant Escapers' tells the story of George Grimson and his fellow NCOs and their attempt, successful and unsuccessful, to outwit their captors, frequently in conditions that made Colditz look like a rest camp. The author...was himself a POW and an eye-witness to the unfolding drama of the Grimson escape saga." THE RIDDLE OF THE TITANIC., Gardiner, Robin and Van der Vat, Dan.
11 Gardiner, Robin and Van der Vat, Dan. THE RIDDLE OF THE TITANIC.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1995, first edition.
312 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297815288 Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Why did Captain Smith accelerate in uniquely treacherous weather towards an exceptionally dangerous ice-field of which he had been warned many times? In t he disaster that followed more than 1,500 people died while barely 700 were saved. This book lays bare as no other the full scope of Smith's astonishing accident record and explores his motives - and the pressures on him - anew. W hat caused the hol e near the bow? The notorious iceberg cracked the plates for 300 feet along the ship's side, but the hole looks more like an explosion. Why is the position of the wreck - pinpointed by the latest technology - irreconcilabl e w i t h the Titanic's SOS calls? The authors conclude that the apparently ruthless American disaster hearings covered up the role of the ship's true owner, the arch-capitalist J.Pierpont Morgan; that the apparently dispassionate British enquiry , d om in at ed by an insider-deal ing Attorney-General, whitewashed a complacent government; and that White Star covered up its own gross negligence by bribing key witnesses. And what of the wreck itself? Here the mystery deepens. When Dr Rober t Ba lla rd - w ho first located the Ti tanic in 1895 - explored the wreck a year later he found the bulkhead not shown on any plans. The most diligent searches have since failed to trace the imposing stern nameplate with its embossed letters eight ee n i nche s h igh. T he authors have gone so far as to explore the breathtaking idea that the Titanic was replaced by her sister-ship, the seriously damaged Olympic, in a plot to recover the huge losses she ran up. The results are tantalising." T hree heav y bu mps a t to p of boards at spine, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light water mark at fore-edge of rear board. Dust jacket has moderate wrinkling at top of spine and hinges, light water mark on inside of rear flap-fold. Good+/ Very Good -

13 Grey, Ian. PETER THE GREAT: EMPEROR OF ALL RUSSIA.
Philadelphia J.B. Lippincott 1960 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Good-
505 pp, 8 1/2" H. "The first modern Russian was Peter the Great. In this enthralling biography of that remarkable, revolutionary ruler, Ian Grey paints a superbly illuminating portrait - clean, clear, objective, without malice or sentimentality. Here we have, life-size, not only the great Tsar, but the man who fell in love with a peasant girl and made her his empress; the father who was betrayed by his son; the roisterer who was a creative genius; the physical giant who carried all his life the scars of a childhood terror; the soldier, sailor, laborer, daring innovator, architect of a nation. Tossing aside all the pomp and holiness that traditionally surrounded a tsar, Peter ripped apart the fabric of Russian life and, almost singlehandedly, made his country into a modern Western power." 468 pp, 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. VOLUME II ONLY. ISBN 0049421654 B&w frontispiece, 2 maps. "Admiral Keyes's correspondence with leading naval personalities sheds light on a variety of naval, military and diplomatic problems during the inter-war period. These include the struggle over control of the Fleet Air Arm, the Jutland Controversy, the Invergordon Mutiny and its aftermath, and both the Washington Naval Conference and the Lausanne Conference. There are interesting lett ers to Keyes from friends describing the situation in the Baltic, 1919-20, and China in the 1920s. Of particular interest is an interview with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934; an account of a naval exercise in the Mediterranean si m u l a t i n g t he reinforcement of Singapore in the event of war with Japan; and a contingency plan for forcing the Dardenelles in the event of war with Turkey over the Mosul question. There are discussions of the writing of the official histor ie s of t he w ar , l et ters from a former Austrian naval officer on Adriatic matters and, of course, lots of revealing comments on the personalities (and feuds) of leaders of the time: Churchill, Trenchard, Beatty, Jellicoe, Chatfield and others . PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT., Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray.
15 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray. PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT.
Brockhampton, London, 1999.
415 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199127 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The catalyst for the formation of British airborne forces came with the spectacular display of the capabilities of airborne assault by the German forces in the blitzkrieg against the west in 1940. Impressed by the daring and courage of the fallschirmjager, Churchill sought to create a similar arm for the British Army. Initially airborne operations were carried out by volunteers from all regiments and corps. While Britain was on the defensive, the newly formed parachute units took part in two airborne raids, carrying the war to the enemy in Italy and France. Of these, the most famous is the raid on Bruneval in 1942, duri ng which German rad ar technology was captured. By the time the Allies were ready to invade 'Fortress Europe' in 1944, The Parachute Regiment, which had been formed in 1942, comprised a large number of well equipped and highly trained battali o n s . Those of the 6th Air borne Division were given the task of holding the vital left flank of the Normandy invasion beaches to block German reinforcements and ensure swift Allied breakout over the strategically vital bridges. The Regiment's m os t fa mo u s hour was again an e xcellent example of the nature of the warfare it had been conceived to conduct: the ill-fated combined airborne/ground assault in Holland in September 1944 depended entirely on a surprise airborne assault to open a c or rid or in t o Germany along which the British Second Army was to pour into the heart of Hitler's Reich. Although the plan failed, it firmly established The Parachute Regiment as an elite force: tough, well-trained and capable of undertaking haza rdo us o per ati on s deep in enemy territ ory. This tradition is no less true now, fifty years on, with the post-war period having seen many further stirring examples of the Regiment's skill and valour throughout the world: from Suez and the jungl es o f Mal aya to t he mountains of the Radfan , the Falkland Islands and duties in Northern Ireland." 16 Jackson, Robert. STRIKE FROM THE SEA: A SURVEY OF BRITISH NAVAL AIR OPERATIONS, 1909-69.
Arthur Barker, London, 1970.
234 pp, 8vo 8 3/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "On 19 July 1918, six Sopwith Camels took off from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier 'Furious' off the Schleswig coast. Their mission - to bomb the German Zeppelin sheds at T ondern. It was the first time in history that a force of aircraft had been launched against an enemy objective from an aircraft carrier: the first ever strike from the sea. In the half century that has elapsed since that historic day, the Roya l N a vy's airmen have carved out a reputation of courage and skill that is second to none. This is their story - a story of men and courage, of crews, aircraft and ships often hurled into battle against hopeless odds. The author has covered ever y m aj or operation involving the Fleet Air Arm and its predecessor, the RNAS, including Korea, Suez, Malaya and forgotten 'backyard wars' such as the British naval operations against the Bolsheviks in the Baltic in 1919, when the Navy's airmen bom be d the Re d Fleet in Kronstadt. The Second World War is covered in detail, from the hunt for the 'Graf Spee' to the final assault on Japan and Kamikaze attacks on the carriers of the British Pacific Fleet." 18 Lucas, James. Foreword by the Rt Hon Sir Bernard Braine. LAST DAYS OF THE THIRD REICH: THE COLLAPSE OF NAZI GERMANY, MAY 1945.
New York William Morrow 1986 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
241 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). "Buttressed by more than 100 maps and photographs, (this) is the first account of the fall of the Third Reich and what happened to its soldiers as the nations that had been forcibly made a part of Hitler's satanic empire exacted their retribution. Here are the stories of quite ordinary people over whom there swept a destructive war and who have not forgotten those events although they occurred more than forty years ago. There are not merely the stories of what happened to the Germans - who had made the mistake of starting a war and then losing it - but also the first-person recollections of people of other nations. On the Eastern Front, the fighting had taken on a dreadful, bitter aspect early on: Three years of intensive, epic conflict in which each side had seemingly tried to outdo the other in atrocity and terror had not prepared the ground for peace and reconciliation. In Germany, propaganda predictions of the horrors and brutalities of the Red Army were to prove all too true. The brutality of the Nazis would be fully paralleled by that of the conqueror. For the governors of Hitler's empire, their families, wives and children, escape from the approaching apocalypse meant running the gauntlet of now-confident partisans on the road to safety. But fear of reprisals was not confined to the vanquished. Exiles from Russia, anti-Communists, deserters, even ex-prisoners of war, knew well what hard fate awaited them in the cold heart of Russia. This compelling account fully captures the tension, turmoil and tragedy of the last days of the Third Reich." One very tiny corner bump on rear board, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

20 May, Milos. Translated by Vladimir Varecha. TALES OF THE AMBER RING.
London B. Mitchell / Orbis 1985 0856135313 / 9780856135316 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Petr Sis.
191 pp, 11 1/4" H. Translated from the Czech. Colour and b&w illustrations throughout. "These marvellous tales come from the faraway Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as from Finland. They are full of earthy humour as well as heroism and romance. They range from court to farmyard, from heaven to hell. the characters are unusually true to life, even unexpectedly so. God Himself is portrayed as being sometimes grumpy, sometimes angry, and very human. The Devil and his cohorts appear frequently, sometimes tricking men, more often being tricked by them. One intriguing aspect of these stories is the way so many of them lead on to another: just as you think you have reached the end, something new happens, and the protagonist is off again. These are among the most intriguing tales ever set down for children, because they do not end with simple morals or easy solutions. Each story creates a world of its own, one which you are unlikely to have encountered before, or ever to find again." One tiny corner bump, small light scuff across fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, small soiling mark on rear panel, soft crease down rear flap.
