THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE., Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier.
5 Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier. THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE.
Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

DECEPTION IN WORLD WAR II., Cruickshank, Charles.
6 Cruickshank, Charles. DECEPTION IN WORLD WAR II.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1979.
248 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 019215849X B&w photographs. "Dr. Cruickshank's is the first book to draw on newly-released (British) material, as well as the papers covering both American and German deception lodged in Was hington. He reveals a fascinating story of brilliant and sometimes ingenious ploys - the deployment of fake tanks, aeroplanes, and even soldiers; the phoney bases and aerodromes which looked real from the air; the build-up of troops and equ i p m e n t t o suggest an attack when none was planned; simulating the noise of battle; the continuous traffic of false radio signals; rigging the stock-market in neutral countries; the deliberate 'indiscretions' by British diplomats abroad; and t he s pr ea di ng of misleading information by MI5 double agents. Such techniques played a vital part in preventing the German invasion of Britain in 1940, in the preparations for the crucial battle of El Alamein, in misleading the enemy about th e A lli ed inv asi ons of Italy and North Africa, and, most important of all, in fooling the Germans about the time and the place of the long-expected Allied invasion of Europe. But (the author) also brings out the many pathetic and sometimes laug habl e fa ilu res of d ecep t ion strategy - for example, the commando 'reconnaissance' raids which, despite all their best efforts, failed to attract the attention of the German coastal patrols. More soberly, he tells of recurrent mistrust and la ck of coor dina tion betw een t he All ies on deception policy." Dust jacket has minor rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
9 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" Minor rubbing, tiny bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear and minor browni ng o n spin e. Ve ry Good +/Very Good+

17 Laffan, R.G.D. THE SERBS: THE GUARDIANS AT THE GATE.
Dorset, New York, 1989, reprint.
299 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0880294132 Maps. " 'The Serbs' was originally a series of lectures delivered by the renowned British historian R.G.D. Laffan. (His) lectures became so famous they were collected and publish ed in book form. Out of print for many years, (this) is the classic book on an important and misunderstood people. Too many of us only know the Serbs as precipitators of World War I, when a Serbian nationalist assassinated Austrian Archduke F r a n c i s Ferdinand in 1914 causing Austria to declare war. But Serbian history is eventful and filled with intrigue. To give us one example, (the author) brings to brilliant life the Turkish war with Serbia in which the great Serbian nobilit y w as n ea rl y annihilated, its lands distributed to the Turkish military aristocracy and the Serbian Christian peasants treated like slaves. All through this occupation the Serbs were forbidden to possess weapons, but an unquenchable desire fo r fre edo m l ed to fr equent insurrection. Finally the Treaty of Adrianople forced the Turks to evacuate. Anyone interested in a historical perpective of a great and heroic people will find (this book) as absorbing as it is inspiring. For, as Pr of esso r La ffan wr ite s ' the Serbs have shown that, despite adversity and homelessness, their spirit remains unconquerable'." THE LONDON SCOTTISH IN THE GREAT WAR., Lloyd, Mark.
19 Lloyd, Mark. THE LONDON SCOTTISH IN THE GREAT WAR.
Leo Cooper, (Barnsley, 2001).
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Initially with the Ist Guards Brigade and later with the 56th (London) Division, the Ist Battalion served in France and Flanders throughout the War. They were the first Territorial soldiers to be committed to battle when, at Messines in 1914, they suffered one-third casualties and were among the last to disengage. So dedicated was the London Scottish to the prosecution of its cause that, by November 1918, the Ist Battalion included only three survivors of the original Battle of Messines. The 2nd Battalion saw action in campaigns as diverse as France and Flanders, Ireland, the Balkans and Palestine where it won two Victoria Crosses. (This book) does not merely set out to recite the oft-told details of famous battles fought and won. Rather it employs a wealth of previously unpublished war journals, diaries and photographs to provide a unique insight into this most auspicious Regiment. It vividly demonstrates the hopes, sufferings and aspirations of the volunteers who not only filled its ranks but, in most cases, made the supreme sacrifice in its cause."
