Mr Hibbert has made extensive use of the many eye-witness accounts which survive in the form of official despatches, histories, diaries, memoirs and letters. With the aid of these, he not only shows a remarkable understanding of Sir John Moore and his fellow-officers, of their conflicting characters and views, but he also provides, through the eyes of officers and men alike, a horrifying picture of the hardships of this brief and bitter campaign. The narra-tive is made the more vivid by the numerous illustrations from contemporary paintings and engravings, and by the five specially prepared maps." 7 Johnston, Mac. CORVETTES CANADA: CONVOY VETERANS OF WWII TELL THEIR OWN TRUE STORIES.
Mississauga, Ontario John Wiley & Sons Canada 2008 0470154292 / 9780470154298 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
243 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "From the fall of 1940 until May 1945, 'Corvettes Canada' follows these small warships as they shepherd convoys of merchant ships carrying weapons, food, oil, raw materials and manufactured goods from North America to the United Kingdom. On the return trip, the escorts bring back the empty ships for reloading. As told in the words of the veterans, the routines of life aboard a corvette are punctuated by sudden bursts of fierce action - the life-and-death moments for warships, merchant ships and German submarines. This was but one enemy - the other was the North Atlantic itself, a powerful force that brought severe cold, icy storms and fierce gales. In addition to the famous Newfie-Derry Run on the North Atlantic, corvettes also saw duty in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on the Triangle Run to New York and Boston, in the Caribbean, in the Mediterranean and in the English Channel, as well as the Pacific Ocean." Previous owner's large signature, place and date on free front endpaper, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of spine, minor rubbing.

8 Johnston, Mac. CORVETTES CANADA: CONVOY VETERANS OF WWII TELL THEIR TRUE STORIES.
Toronto McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1994 0075513811 / 9780075513810 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
310 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, map. "The corvette was 'the' ship to define the Canadian navy in World War II as an escort service. From the fall of 1940 until May 1945, we follow these small warships as they shepherd convoys of merchant ships carrying weapons, food, oil, raw materials and manufactured goods from North America to the United Kingdom. On the return trip, the escorts bring back the empty vessels for reloading. We see the routines of corvette life punctuated by sudden bursts of fierce action. These are life-and-death moments for the warship escorts, the merchant ships they protect and the attacking U-boats of the German navy. But there is another enemy - the North Atlantic itself. It is a powerful force that dictates the corvette crews' living conditions and, at times, even their chances of survival. The corvettes saw action in other important areas, so our veterans tell us about the famous Triangle Run and lesser-known efforts such as trips to Labrador and escort work in the St. Lawrence River. We also learn about service in the English Channel, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and in the Pacific Ocean. This is the story of the men themselves - men from the lower deck and the wardroom. It is the story of the 123 corvettes they sailed. And in many ways the corvette story is an analogy for Canada as a whole: unprepared for war, committed to a cause, bloodied in batle - and ultimately triumphant." Creasing at fore-edge of page 113/114, slight bump/wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of hinges and flap-folds, very minor rubbing.

CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY., McDonough, James Lee.
10 McDonough, James Lee. CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY.
Knoxville University of Tennessee Press 1984 0870494252 / 9780870494253 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "In the wake of the bloodshed at Chickamauga, the struggle for Chattanooga became a decisive engagement of the Civil War. McDonough reconstructs the siege and battles as they appeared to both Rebels and Yankees, giving the reader a front-row seat at one of the major dramas in American history. The tale culminates in the complex bid for Missionary Ridge, which ended with the collapse of the Confederate line at its center. Reversing their situation in one final, dramatic hour, Union forces emerged victorious. The Rebels forfeited the advantage offered by the triumph of Chickamauga and now found the tables turned. With Chattanooga in their grasp, the Federals stood in a position to carry the fight deep into the South. The river and railroads both made the city important as a natural passageway that provided the Union with a staging base for military operations. The Rebels, on the other hand, found their railway communications crippled. The Confederacy had earlier been split along the Mississippi River; now it was to be severed by a second line that passed from Nashville to Atlanta via Chattanooga." Very light edge wear, small bump at top edge of front board, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

MOORE OF CORUNNA., Parkinson, Roger.
12 Parkinson, Roger. MOORE OF CORUNNA.
Hart-Davis, MacGibbon, St Albans, 1976, first edition.
245 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0246107553 B&w illustrations. "Of all British generals who claim the admiration of future generations, Sir John Moore perhaps most truly embodies the ideal of the perfect leader. His c ourage, tactical brilliance, decisiveness, incorruptibility, and gift for firing the spirits of his men in battle were combined with a conscientious regard for the authoity of his government at home - even when its dictates were at odds with h i s o w n sense of the military realities. Rober Parkinson portrays, with a vitality that matches his subject, Moore's extraordinary career: from the first taste of action against the rebel in America to his early personal triumphs against the Fr en ch in C or sica, Holland and Egypt. Then came the clouds of controversy; Moore's involvement in uneasy and dangerous relationships with local authorities in Corsica, Sicily and Sweden brought criticism as well as fame, and foreshadowed the tra gic ro l e h e w oul d play in the Peninsular War. The desperate retreat to Corunna and the last heroic stand against Napoleon's armies are movingly and dramatically told. Dominating the tumult of events and intrigues is the character of a ma n in who m 'e xe rtio ns a mong st dangers and difficulties is preferred to idleness', whose private feelings were subordinated to loyalty to his country and the passionate love of his profession; a restrained eighteenth century gentleman who gave a cap tured Fren ch comma nder his o wn sword to make him feel more comfortable, and who continued to ask as the last life ebbed from his body, 'Are the French beaten?'." Book slightly cocked, light wrinkling at top of spine, small very light stain on of text block. D ust ja cket has li ght wrinkling at top of spine, one tiny edge tear, light liquid stain at bottom inside spine. Very Good/Very Good

13 Ream, Peter T. THE FORT ON THE SASKATCHEWAN: A RESCOURCE BOOK ON FORT SASKATCHEWAN AND DISTRICT.
Fort Saskatchewan Self-published 1974 Second Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
591 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on half title page: "With best wishes, Peter T. Ream". Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/plans. "Starting with the area's first industry and ending with the great industrial boom of the mid-twentieth century, Peter Ream brings alive the history of one of the oldest settled areas of Alberta. (He) narrates the early Indian and fur trade activity near the mouth of the Sturgeon River - then known as Birch Hills - where the plentiful supplies of spruce and birch bark made possible the building of canoes for the long trip down the North Saskatchewan River to the Hudson Bay. It was here in the spring of 1755 that Anthony Henday camped - the first white man to penetrate into what is now the Province of Alberta. Forty years later, in 1795, a trading fort, known as Fort Augustus was established by the North-West Company and in the same year the Hudson's Bay Company built Edmonton House close by. The first settlement took place in 1872 with the arrival of Francois and Joseph Lamoureux followed in 1891 by a group of settlers from Austria and still later by the Parry Sound Colony from Ontario. The book continues through the events of early settlement and development to (the early 1970s). This is a resource book - fully documented and appendixed. The material has been thoroughly researched from such sources as the national and provincial archives, municipal records and the early records of the Oblate Fathers of St. Albert." Slight bump to top corner of pages, light edge wear, small bump to top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light rubbing, one small and one or two tiny tears archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling on rear panel.
