4 Brayley, Martin. Series editor, Martin Windrow. THE BRITISH ARMY 1939-45 (1) NORTH-WEST EUROPE. OSPREY MEN-AT-ARMS SERIES 354. (I)
Oxford Osprey 2001 1841760528 / 9781841760520 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Colour Plates By Mike Chappell.
48 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, map. 8 pages of colour uniform studies. "The Second World War was Britain's last as a world power; it was a citizen's war, in which most British men and women were mobilised. For a year it saw Britain standing alone aginst the fascist dictatorships; and winning it cost the sacrifice of the entire national wealth. This first title of three describes and explains the uniforms developed for European service. It traces the appearance of the 'Tommy' from pre-war mobilisation, through the years of defeat and endurance, to the final return to Europe on D-Day and the long fighting advance to northern Germany by the spring of 1945. Uniform information is supported by a campaign summary, infantry organisation tables, lists of arms and services, and basic specifications of a number of heavy weapons." THE SANDS OF DUNKIRK., Collier, Richard.
5 Collier, Richard. THE SANDS OF DUNKIRK.
London Collins 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
319 pp, 8 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "In May 1940, the German army and Luftwaffe drove a beaten army back across northern France to the Channel coast, cut off all lines of retreat and smashed the only port within reach; even Churchill feared 'the greatest military disaster of our long history'. Everybody knows that a third of a million British troops did escape to fight again another day. Many know at what a cost in ships and lives the rescue operation was carried out. But the whole astonishing story of Dunkirk as a human experience, of what it really meant to be there, has never yet been told. Now Richard Collier has written a vivid and authentic account based on exhaustive research and hundreds of interviews in England, France and Germany. For the first time we have, not the verdict of a military historian nor the creation of a novelist, but a narrative based on the experiences of those who were there as the enemy drew closer and the bombardment intensified - the bewildered skipper of a Thames barge, the helpless civilian, the soldier on the beach, the exhausted Stuka pilot, the stoical and the terrified." Previous owner's name stamp and date on free front endpaper, book is very slightly cocked, very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear, protected in a mylar sleeve.

310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. Signed by author on title page (signature only). "Almina was the illegitimate daughter of banking tycoon Alfred de Rothschild. She was his only daughter and he doted on her. She married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, at 19, with an enormous dowry. At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying mix of sumptuous banquets for 500 and even the occasional royal visitor. Almina oversaw 80 members of staff - many of whom came from families who had worked at Highclere for generations. But when the First World War broke out, life at Highclere, both upstairs and downstairs, changed forever. History intervened and Almina and the staff of Highclere were thrown into one of the most turbulent times of the last century. Almina was forced to draw on her deepest reserves of courage in order to ensure her family, the staff and the castle survived. This is the remarkable story of a lost time. But Highclere remains and in this book, Lady Carnarvon weaves Almina's journey and those of her family into the heritage and history of one of England's most exquisite Victorian stately homes." "Packed with authentic atmosphere, the retreat and the desperate lifting of the weary soldiers is seen in its tragic entirety, often through first-hand reco llections of the men who were there. The story of Dunkirk is a dramatic epic of courage and confusion, resulting in a successful and often heroic evacuation....(Harris) describes in vivid detail how the evacuation developed, on a day-by-d a y b a s i s , and destroys more than one of the myths that have come to be associated with Dunkirk. However, the spirit, humour and drama that epitomised what came to be known as the 'spirit of Dunkirk' was, and is, undeniable. Illustrated wit h ma n y co nt em po ra r y photographs, this book provides a complete historical account of the lifting of the British expeditionary force in the first week of June 1940...." THE WESTERN FRONT. ORDINARY SOLDIERS AND THE DEFINING BATTLES OF WORLD WAR I., Holmes, Richard.
10 Holmes, Richard. THE WESTERN FRONT. ORDINARY SOLDIERS AND THE DEFINING BATTLES OF WORLD WAR I.
TV Books, New York, 2000.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1575001470 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The Western Front in World War I was the scene of devastating trench warfare and astonishing human loss: nearly 750,000 soldiers perished in the battles fought in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1918. (This book) traces the path those soldiers took, and presents the political, military, and human dilemmas of a bitter and bloody war. (It) takes us through the major and most costly battles of the Western Front, many of which garnered dubious gains at best, and all of which were won only with great human sacrifice. The first battle of Ypres was not only a scene of heavy Allied losses, but was dubbed by the Germ ans the 'Massacre of the Innocents'; Verdun was a scene of astonishing casualties, where the professed goal of the German commander was to bleed the French forces to death; the fighting in the trenches of the Somme - a battle of attrition tha t l a s t e d six months - proved a turning point for the morale of the British Army and 'the muddy grave of the German field Army, and of the confidence in the infallibility of German leadership'; while the long wearing slog toward Passchendaele w as pa ve d wi th inept leadership and mutinies in the French forces before dreadful conditions simply ground the battle to a halt. Portraying the Western Front in stark and moving terms, Holmes draws not only from current scholarship, but also fr om l ett ers w rit ten by the soldiers and the stories of the survivors themselves." HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940., Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler.
12 Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler. HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1997.
287 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557503907 B&w photographs, maps. "During the summer of 1940, the world held its breath. The greatest operation in German military history thus far - an invasion of the British Isles - was Hitler's next logical step. After the rapid overthrow of France, Great Britain was the only opponent still left. In London, the invasion was considered absolutely inevitable. Joseph Kennedy, the American Ambassador, described an even darker scenario in his reports to Washington. He not only questioned the effectiveness of the military defence, but considered the island kingdom to be in such a state of decadence and decay that any moral resistance would collapse under a German a s s a u l t . All Britain was convinced that the Germans would come. They had nothing left with which to oppose the German panzers. In only five weeks the Germans had crushed France and expelled the BEF from Belgium. Now those panzers stood on t he C ha nn el c oast, waiting for the order to send them to England. But it was remarkably difficult for the German military leadership to come to a decision. Greatest haste appeared to be called for if the unique opportunity were to be seized a nd the wa r e nde d w ith a short campaign in England. The Kriegsmarine had already converted all available ship space for the transportation of troops and brought it to the Channel coast. By day and by night, German bomber and fighter formations fl ew i nto Engl and to b reak British resistance. The Luftwaffe was to create the primary condition for Operation 'Sea Lion' - gaining command of the air, without which a landing on the English coast was impossible. The fight developed into the 'Bat tle o f Br itain ', i n whi ch the very existence of Great Britain was at stake. If the German squadrons could not only gain the upper hand in the air battles, but also destroy the major ports and paralyse British aircaft industry, nothing mor e wou ld sta nd in the w ay of the i nvasion. Those events and the decision made during Britian's nightmare summer of 1940 receive a fresh and penetrating analysis in this book." 96 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated in b&w and color with photos, maps, battle plans, drawings. "The first major clash of the Great War, Mons came as a nasty shock to the Imperial German Army. Assured by their command that they would sweep through the French and their British allies in the BEF - 'that contemptible little army', into the sea in a matter of weeks; they were stopped in their tracks at Mons by a numerically inferior British force. Eventually forced to fall back by overwhelming German numbers, the British carried out a masterful fighting retreat across Belgium and northern France." "The Osprey Campaign Series presents concise, authoritative accounts of the great conflicts of history. Each volume begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign strategy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages of the campaign. Each volume concludes with a brief guide to the battlefield today, and detailed notes for wargamers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. CALL TO ARMS: THE BRITISH ARMY 1914-18., Messenger, Charles.
15 Messenger, Charles. CALL TO ARMS: THE BRITISH ARMY 1914-18.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2005 0297846957 / 9780297846956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
574 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "(B)y the end of the war, over 8.5 million men had been recruited by Britain and the average field strength of its armies was 3.3 million men. For the first time, Britain found itself obliged to field land forces equal to those of its Continental neighbours. Moreover, however uncertain its beginnings, by 1918 this was an army that had become the most effective fighting force on the Western Front. In this exceptional account of the administration of the British Army in the First World War, Messenger charts how this unprecedented new force was raised, trained and deployed. He looks in detail at the problems of recruitment and training and at the difficulties of integrating regular troops with volunteers, and, later, conscripted men. The central question of manpower, both on the home front and in the trenches, above all after the first enthusiastic flood of volunteers had dried up, is examined in illuminating depth. He decribes how morale was sustained among men wholly unused to military life but fighting a war in which death was dealt out on an industrial scale. He looks, too, at the role of women, who for the first time played a significant role in a major conflict. Discipline, courts martial, the treatment of the wounded, the provision of clothing, the huge difficulties of feeding such a vast force, the awarding of medals and other honours, officer selection and the training of the Staff are just some of the themes in this magisterial new survey of the organization of Britain's Army in the First World War. 16 Mosier, John. THE MYTH OF THE GREAT WAR: A NEW MILITARY HISTORY OF WORLD WAR I

381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w maps. "Based on a decade of research into previously unused French and German sources, (this book) shows what actually happened at the front as the participants perceived it at the time, as opposed to what French and British commanders and governments claimed. John Mosier, who visited all the major battlefields, describes and analyzes campaigns that are routinely neglected or ignored and shows why conventional accounts of such major battles as Verdun are incorrect. He explains how German tactics, weapons, training and leadership were consistently superior, and why the endless, ineffective attacks of the French and British with inferior weapons and battle tactics of the previous century resulted in mindless slaughter and defeat. Mosier also discusses the major military leaders on both sides - including Joffre, Petain, Foch, Gallieni, French, Haig, Wilson, Moltke, Ludendorff, Falkenhayn, Mudra, and Pershing. The French and British military controlled, suppressed, and manipulated all battlefield reports. German losses were magnified; failures became successes, defeats victories. Allied intelligence was grossly inaccurate and inadequate, and the result was a distorted picture of what was really happening. Absorbing and persuasive, 'The Myth of the Great War' is a striking new assessment of the military realities of World War I." "(C)hallenges the popular myth about the incompetence and callousness of the Great War generals and examines the events that took place on the Western Front through the eyes of these same officers to explain the circumstances that led them to plan and fight as they did. (Asks) the questions: Why was Britain so unprepared for a European war in 1914?; What role did the British politicians play?; What was the truth behind Anglo-French relations?; Can the Australians and Canadians really take credit for the great victories of the War?; Was the arrival of the American army really decisive?; Was any general really equipped with the knowledge and information to deal with the horrors of trench warfare?; How much of what we now believe about the Great War is true? This thoroughly researched and controversial book shatters many assumptions about the leadership of the Great War and the myth of the Great War generals. He reveals governmental b lunders and incompetence and the subsequent attempts at covering them up. This is the story of a bankrupt and virtually powerless Britain, its population low in morale and forced to suffer squalid makeshift conditions. Even the closely gua r d e d s e c ret of Britain's attempts at appeasement at a late stage, after Churchill had become Prime Minister, has been carefully reconstructed. On the edge of defeat, the country had to rely on the United States to enable it to continue in th e wa r. ( He ) do es not denigrate the heroism of individuals remembered for their bravery, but he gives a startling account of Dunkirk, of the British government's stormy relations with France, the RAF's role in the Battle of Britain and Churchill 's le ade r sh ip. Following the German invasion of Belgium and northern France, the French were defeated in a series of battles along the frontiers between 14 and 25 August. However, the German right flank had become overextended, enabling the French commander General Joffre to launch a series of counter-attacks. After six days of fighting the Germans realized that their plan to defeat France quickly had failed and they retreated to the Noyon-Verdun line, where the trench warfare of the Western Front began." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light wear at corners of front cover, two very small ddints on fron cover.
